So David now is going after all of his enemies. Under his rule, the Philistines are finally pushed back. As we have seen, they have been a thorn for quite a while. Now he also defeats Moab. This is the first time that we see David address an enemy this way. Evidently, the Moabites surrendered without a major battle and there were too many men left alive in their army. David takes a measuring line and measures off two lines and kills all of those within that distance and keeping alive those which were measured in one line. The Moabites now become David’s servants. This is interesting because David’s Great Grandmother Ruth was a Moabites, and David’s parents stayed in Moab while David was being pursued by Saul.
