“When all kinds of trials and temptations crowd into your lives my brothers, don’t resent them as intruders, but welcome them as friends!” (James 1:2 PHILLIPS) 
 
 
There are a lot of ways you can respond to the trials and temptations that daily life throws at you. One option is to give in without a fight—just surrender to despair or to your sinful urges. That’s one extreme. Let’s call it The Worst Possible Thing You Can Do. 
 
 
Another option is to blame God, which is actually the same as playing God, if you think about it. You start with the assumption that trials and temptations are bad things, and that if God doesn’t spare you from them, He’s doing something wrong. 
 
 
A third option is to hunker down and wait for them to pass, like a coastal resident riding out a hurricane. 
 
 
James offers a different suggestion—one that’s so jaw-droppingly unexpected that it might make you do a double-take. Welcome trials and temptations as friends? Is that even possible? 
 
 
Look at Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend” (NLT). You could also substitute the word spouse. Spouses and friends do the hard things that other people won’t do. They challenge us. They lovingly knock us down to size when we need it. They make us better people. 
 
 
Trials and temptations do the same thing. They just use different methods. That is, God uses those methods. He created you. He knows your potential. And because He knows exactly how you’re wired, He knows which parts of your potential can be unlocked through successes and victories and which parts can be unlocked through trials and temptations. And that’s why He allows them into your life. 
 
 
In 1 Corinthians 10:13, the apostle Paul writes, “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure” (NLT). 
 
 
Because God is faithful, we can endure anything life throws at us. Knowing that, we can look for His lessons in every trial and temptation. 
 
 
God allows hardships to remind you of His power. Sometimes He allows a difficulty so that He can deliver you from it. Sometimes He allows it so that He can remove the difficulty from you. And sometimes He allows hardships to produce or strengthen a necessary quality in your life. 
 
 
James wrote, “For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing” (James 1:3–4 NLT). 
 
 
Think of it as a spiritual workout. I go to the gym, but I don’t like it. I’m there with the weight slammers, the guys who drop their barbells so everyone else can hear the heavy clang. And the people who sweat all over everything. And the people who take pictures of themselves while they work out. My favorite part of the gym experience is when I leave. 
 
 
But I go to get stronger. And that’s not an easy process. You have to break down muscle in order to build it up. God does the same for us. Trials and temptations are like God’s gym, where He strengthens us for the present and for the future.

Adversity teaches us eternal truths we would otherwise not learn. For example, it’s human nature to try to avoid pain at all costs. But pain reminds us of a deeper need. Just as hunger pangs remind us that it’s time to eat, adversity can remind us that it’s time to make an important change in our lives. 
 
 
  
 
 
Adversity gives us a deeper compassion for others in pain. It’s been said, “If you preach to people who are hurting, you will never lack for an audience.” It’s also been said, “Success builds walls; failure builds bridges.” If you say, “Look at how great my life is! I don’t have any problems! Follow me on Instagram! Everything’s perfect!” who can connect with that? But if you talk about your failures, difficulties, and challenges, now you’re speaking the language of real people who live in the real world. 
 
 
  
 
 
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 1:4–5, “He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ” (NLT). If I could change history, I would choose not to endure the loss of my son. I would bring him back in a heartbeat. But I can say this: God has given me, my wife, and our son a ministry we did not ask for, but a ministry we embrace. It’s a ministry of helping others who’ve lost loved ones. 
 
 
  
 
 
I don’t want to waste my pain. If I can offer a word of encouragement or hope to someone who’s gone through the worst tragedy imaginable, I’ll seize the opportunity. I’ll tell them that God will be with them through the pain and grief. And I’ll thank God for the ministry opportunity. 
 
 
  
 
 
It’s easy to give thanks when your health is good, the lights are green, the sky is blue, and the bills are paid. It’s not as easy to give thanks when problems mount. But we must. Psalm 106:1 says, “Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever!” (NLT). If God ceases to be good, we no longer need to give thanks. But God will always be good, so we must always give thanks.

I became a Christian when I was seventeen years old. I’d never been to church, never read the Bible. I’d asked Christ to come into my life, but I knew nothing about the Christian walk. A fellow believer warned me that I would face trials and be tempted by the devil. I didn’t even know the devil existed. 
 
 
  
 
 
Not long afterward, a pretty girl who I’d noticed but never had the courage to talk to walked up to me in class and said, “Hi, what’s your name?” 
 
 
  
 
 
While I stumbled for an answer, I was thinking, “Why is this pretty girl talking to me? She’s never even acknowledged my existence before.” 
 
 
  
 
 
She said, “You’re really cute. I was wondering if you’d like to spend the weekend with me and go to my parents’ cabin.” 
 
 
  
 
 
And I realized, This is temptation. This is the devil. He doesn’t have a pointed tail. She has dark hair and blue eyes, and she’s looking at me. And I said no. 
 
 
  
 
 
I wish I could tell you that as the years pass, trials and temptations grow fewer and farther between. But that’s not the case. Of course, I don’t need to tell you that. If you’re not facing a trial or temptation right now, you probably recently faced one. Or you see one on the horizon. And you can’t understand why they keep coming. You’re wondering, “What’s wrong with me? What have I done to deserve this?” 
 
 
  
 
 
Here’s a better question: What’s right with you? You’re being attacked with trials and temptations because the devil sees you as a threat and wants to stop you. So God’s allowing these trials and temptations for a purpose. It’s said that Christians are a lot like tea bags: You don’t know what they’re made of until you put them in hot water. If you’re feeling the hot water of trials or temptation right now, you have a chance to show what you’re made of. 
 
 
  
 
 
On the other hand, people who say “I’m not going through any trials, and I can’t remember the last time I was tempted” are revealing their spiritual ineffectiveness. The devil doesn’t waste his time with a neutralized Christian. He focuses his attacks on those who are threats to his stronghold. 
 
 
  
 
 
But here’s the good news: Jesus said that “the gates of hell shall not prevail against” His church (Matthew 16:18 ESV). Have you ever seen a movie where an army storms a castle and uses a battering ram to smash the gates? Apply that image to Jesus’ words. Christians are the invading army. The gospel is our battering ram. And the gates of Hell—the devil’s strongholds in this world—can’t withstand it. 
 
 
  
 
 
So, the devil will use the weapons at his disposal, including trials and temptations, to try to take out his most dangerous adversaries. If you’re going through trials and temptations, stay strong. And, congratulations, Satan considers you a threat.

Consider It Pure Joy | James 1:2 | Our Daily Bread Video Devotional

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.” (James 1:2 NLT) 
 
 
There are certain passages of Scripture that make you say, “Huh?” James 1:2 is a prime example. It almost defies logic. Doesn’t it seem natural for our circumstances to dictate our response? It’s just input and output, isn’t it? If we’re dealt personal troubles, the obvious responses are anger, frustration, and anxiety. If we experience a betrayal, the logical response is bitterness. If the input is disappointment, the output is sadness. Right? 
 
 
Not according to James 1:2. “When troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.” If that seems like a weird thing to say to a suffering person, look more closely. James isn’t saying enjoy it when you suffer. And he’s not saying that troubles are joy because they’re not. Hebrews 12:11 tells us, “No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful!” (NLT). James is saying when you’re confronted by difficult situations, make the choice to rejoice. 
 
 
Jesus set the ultimate example for us in this area. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame” (NLT). Joy? What joy? Jesus was scoured with a whip thirty-nine times. His beard was ripped from His face. He was punched countless times by Roman soldiers. He had a crown of thorns pressed into His scalp. After losing a tremendous amount of blood, He was forced to carry a heavy crossbeam to the site of His crucifixion. He had spikes driven through His wrists and feet. 
 
 
Can you find the joy in this picture? Jesus could. The joy was you. The joy was me. 
 
 
Jesus knew what His suffering and death on the cross would accomplish. He came to this world to be a suffering Savior, to bear our sins, to die in our place, and then to rise again from the dead. Instead of focusing on the misery and pain of His immediate circumstances, He saw the joy in the big picture. He made the choice to rejoice. 
 
 
Paul and Silas made the same choice when they sang praises to God after they’d been thrown in a Roman jail for preaching the gospel (see Acts 16:25–40). They didn’t give in to self-pity, fear, or anger behind bars. Instead, they counted it a privilege to suffer for their faith. They understood that God was doing something bigger, and they rejoiced that they were able to play a part in His plan. 
 
 
You can do the same thing. If you’re going through a time of trial right now, rejoice. It doesn’t matter if you don’t want to or don’t feel like it. Rejoice. Why? Because God is in control. He knows what you’re experiencing. Rejoice because God is working your situation for His purposes. 
 
 
If you’re struggling in a relationship, rejoice. God may be strengthening your bond. Or He may be giving you clarity about what your next step should be. Whatever the case, know that He is aligning your relationship with His will. 
 
 
No matter what you’re going through, it will work together for God’s glory and ultimately for your good. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” (NLT). God is in control, so we can make the choice to rejoice.

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.” (James 1:2 NLT)
 

There are certain passages of Scripture that make you say, “Huh?” James 1:2 is a prime example. It almost defies logic. Doesn’t it seem natural for our circumstances to dictate our response? It’s just input and output, isn’t it? If we’re dealt personal troubles, the obvious responses are anger, frustration, and anxiety. If we experience a betrayal, the logical response is bitterness. If the input is disappointment, the output is sadness. Right?
 

Not according to James 1:2. “When troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.” If that seems like a weird thing to say to a suffering person, look more closely. James isn’t saying enjoy it when you suffer. And he’s not saying that troubles are joy because they’re not. How to Have Joy in the Trials | James 1:2 | Our Daily Bread Video Devotional

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” (James 1:5 NLT) 
 
 
Some people treat prayer like a Christmas list. They see the words “generous God” and launch into their “gimmes.” Gimme a new car. Gimme a vacation home. Gimme a Gulfstream jet so I don’t have to fly commercial. The problem is, if you focus your attention on material possessions, you overlook the most valuable asset God makes available to you: wisdom. 
 
 
James says, if you need wisdom, ask for it. God won’t rebuke you, no matter how many times you request it. Believe me, I’ve tested the limits. I pray for wisdom all the time. When I start a business meeting. When I prepare a message. When I think about the future of our church. I love to say, “Lord, You’ve promised in Your Word to give us Your wisdom. I’m praying for it right now.” Which is another way of saying, “I need to know Your will, Lord. Show me Your will.” 
 
 
If you’re married or in a relationship, the need is even more pressing. God’s wisdom can help you navigate the highs and lows of life together. It can help you meet your relationship challenges head-on. It can help you keep your eye on the big picture while you work out the small details. 
 
 
God’s wisdom is something we should all be seeking after. Proverbs 9:10 says, “Fear of the Lord”—that is, reverence for the Lord—“is the foundation of wisdom” (NLT). 
 
 
Don’t mistake intelligence for wisdom. You can be smart but not necessarily wise. I’ve seen people who are very intelligent, who have advanced degrees hanging on their wall, and who are very successful in their chosen field do some of the most ridiculous things imaginable. 
 
 
Intelligence is acquiring knowledge and applying it, developing certain skills. But wisdom comes from a different place. Some wisdom comes from life’s lessons. We learn from things we’ve done right—and we also learn from our mistakes. But the ultimate source of wisdom is God and His Word. That’s what we want to build our lives on. 
 
 
In Matthew 7, Jesus tells the story of two men who built on two different foundations. The wise man built his house upon rock. When storms came and beat upon the house, it stood firm because it was built on the right foundation. In contrast, the foolish man built his house on sand. When the same storms came, his house collapsed. Jesus said, “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock” (NLT). 
 
 
Building a life is different from building a house. It’s not always obvious what’s rock and what’s sand. That’s why God wants us to pray—as often as we need to—for wisdom. Some people build their lives on a relationship that seems unshakable—as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar—only to have their foundation collapse when the relationship ends. Other people build their lives on job security or financial security, and then find themselves in rubble when the industry or market collapses. 
 
 
God will help us find the solid ground of His will in every situation. All we have to do is ask.
