Ecclesiastes 1:3 (NASB) “What advantage does man have in all his work which he does under the sun?” 
 
This research question defines Solomon’s experiments through Ecclesiastes. What is the profit to life’s toil? What advantage exists? 
 
The key to this verse and Ecclesiastes is “under the sun” (here is the long list for cross-referencing the phrase "under the sun" in the book ... 1:3, 1:9, 1:14, 2:17-18, 2:20-22, 3:16, 4:1-3, 4:7, 5:13, 6:1, 6:12, 8:9, 8:15, 9:3, 9:6, 9:9, 10:5). 
 
“Under the sun” explains the assessment as horizontal. The experiments’ perspective is anthrocentric, viewed from a mortal’s point-of-view, from a secular/pragmatic perspective. 
 
The flow of topics doesn’t form a logical outline but a circular discussion. In chapters 1-2, Solomon scrutinizes life, wisdom, wealth, and death “under the sun” without God. In chapters 2-10, he re-examines them with the addition of God. All Is/Not Vanity (Ecclesiastes 1:1–3): Evening Worship (10/9/22)

Cyclical view of life as nothing changes (1:4-7) and nothing’s new (1:8-11). 
 
Like Henry David Thoreau or John Muir, the Preacher of Ecclesiastes learns from nature and witnesses divine truth in the creation. The cyclical nature of life is like what is found in nature and the seasons as in “earth” (4), “sun” (5), “wind” (6), “circular courses” (6), and “rivers” and “seas” (7). God, through his creation, reveals a natural rhythm – cyclical flow – which provides comfort like a mother rocking her toddler. And yet, this natural rhythm also leaves us weary and exhausted. 
 
People are complicated. Our psyche is multifaceted and often in conflict with itself. We are conflicted because we desire change while wanting consistency and we desire stability while fearing stagnation. We want something new; it is an innate desire of our psyche (8) but the world provides nothing new (9-10). And yet, we think things are new because our self-deception and poor memories (11). 
 
What are we to take away from this paragraph about life’s monotony? “All things are wearisome,” says verse 8 (NASB). Just as the sun, winds, streams, and all natural objects of God’s creation are weary with their ceaseless round of activities, so our existence of ceaseless rounds nothing but wearisome. Weary (yaga’) is used two other times in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 25:18 linked with being faint and Second Samuel 17:2 linked with being exhausted). No activity, whether routine and common or new and inventive, can provide true and meaningful purpose, joy, and fulfillment. All activity becomes wearisome grinding us down rather than polishing our shine. Busyness is not fulfillment but wearisome linked with fainting and being exhausted. Think of Psalm 46:10, “Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Ecclesiastes 1:2;2: 18-26 
New International Version (NIV) 
 
“Meaningless! Meaningless!” 
 says the Teacher. 
“Utterly meaningless! 
 Everything is meaningless.” 
 
I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. 19 And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun? 23 All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless. 
 
24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

C. Cycle of the Sun (Ecclesiastes 1:5) 
a. Its circuit 
i. From the east (Numbers 2:3) 
ii. To the west (Isaiah 45:5-6) 
iii. Note: those who criticize the Bible will make a great point how Ecclesiastes 1:5 is in error here. They will say something to the effect; the sun really doesn’t rise and set. Actually, the earth rotates and the sun appears to rise and set. Therefore, the Bible must be wrong, for if Solomon had known this fact, he would not have said it this way. 
1. However, we should remember a couple of things: 
a. 1) Today, yes we know the earth rotates. Yet, if you check the weather (whether by TV, radio, internet, newspaper, or smartphone), you will see where they will tell you when the sun is set to rise and when it is scheduled to set. 
b. 2) Also, if you were to take the time to get up early and wait for the sun to come up, you will see it come up in the east and then if you were to take the time that evening you would see it set in the west. 
c. 3) Scientist use these very terms today. 
d. 4) Also, remember Ecclesiastes is “under the sun.” Our perspective is one that is looking from earth. What better way to understand that you are watching the sun from earth. 
2. There is a sunrise and a sunset. - Why does man try so hard to set a different standard for God? 
b. Appointed by the Lord (Psalm 50:1) 
i. From the beginning (Genesis 1:14-19) 
ii. To give light for the day (Genesis 1:16; Psalm 104:19-24) 
iii. To set time for us (Genesis 1:14, 16-18; Psalm 104:22-23) 
iv. It shall not end without His approval (Genesis 8:20-22; Jeremiah 33:19-22)

Ecclesiastes 1:1-18 (ESV) 
The words of the Preacher,[a] the son of David, king in Jerusalem. 
2 Vanity[b] of vanities, says the Preacher, 
 vanity of vanities! All is vanity. 
3 What does man gain by all the toil 
 at which he toils under the sun? 
4 A generation goes, and a generation comes, 
 but the earth remains forever. 
5 The sun rises, and the sun goes down, 
 and hastens[c] to the place where it rises. 
6 The wind blows to the south 
 and goes around to the north; 
around and around goes the wind, 
 and on its circuits the wind returns. 
7 All streams run to the sea, 
 but the sea is not full; 
to the place where the streams flow, 
 there they flow again. 
8 All things are full of weariness; 
 a man cannot utter it; 
the eye is not satisfied with seeing, 
 nor the ear filled with hearing. 
9 What has been is what will be, 
 and what has been done is what will be done, 
 and there is nothing new under the sun. 
10 Is there a thing of which it is said, 
 “See, this is new”? 
It has been already 
 in the ages before us. 
11 There is no remembrance of former things,[d] 
 nor will there be any remembrance 
of later things[e] yet to be 
 among those who come after. 
 
12 I the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I applied my heart[f] to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. 14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity[g] and a striving after wind.[h] 15 What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be counted. 
16 I said in my heart, “I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me, and my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind. 18 For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
