 Today’s title is “Grace Renewed” 
 
 One of the greatest blessings of God for His people is that He makes a covenant with us. God makes a covenant with us as if we are equal partners to Him. Through the covenant that He enters with people, God not only binds people but also Himself. Although God’s covenant with His people had various forms depending on the circumstances, there are essential underlying elements at the basis of all the covenants. We can sum it up as “You will be my people and I will be your God”. The basic motto of all the covenants whether it was with Adam, Abraham, Moses, or David was it. Through the covenants, God pledges that He will be our God. He will lead us, multiply us, bless us, care for us, forgive us and be with us forever with love. In return, people pledge that they will glorify God by worshipping Him, being faithful to Him, and living in a way to honor Him with love. God has faithfully kept all the covenants. People, on the contrary, have broken the covenants with God over and over again starting from Adam. But God is almost always ready to restore and renew the broken covenants. We see one such example in today’s passage. God’s covenant with David and Solomon has been broken by the successors such as Rehoboam. People followed the king in deserting God. With the spiritual decline, the overall welfare of the kingdom plunged too. Kingdom became divided. Foreign countries who were subjugated in the reign of David and Solomon now ceaselessly threatened them. King Asa was able to see the clear connection between the spiritual decline and the decline of the kingdom’s welfare. The only way to restore the previous blessings was to return to the Lord. He gathers all the people of Israel in Jerusalem and renews their covenant with God. They pledge to seek the Lord with all their heart and soul. All who would not seek the Lord were to be put to death. They did it wholeheartedly and they sought God eagerly. As a result, God was found by them. He gave them rest on every side. It is as simple as that. This is the unchanging principle of loving God. We broke the covenants. We abandoned God. God has all the covenantal rights to abandon us. But He still has not ceased to have compassion for us. No matter how screwed up you are, no matter how far off you are from God, if you return wholeheartedly to God and seek Him eagerly, He will restore you and surround you with His peace. Have you ever received such grace of renewed love and blessings from God? I have a lot of it. If you haven’t, you can receive it now. Just return to Him wholeheartedly and seek Him eagerly. He will surely be found. Amen!

Asa receives a prophecy from the Lord saying that “The Lord is with you while you are with Him” (verse 2b). So Asa sets out to ensure that ALL Judah is with Him. 
 
The kingdom of Judah has just experienced a MIGHTY move of the Lord. He defeated the Ethiopians before them and gave them a great victory, including MUCH spoils. On the way home Asa is met with a message from the Lord. “If you seek Me with your whole heart I promise I will be found by you.” Can you imagine any better message from the Lord? I can’t. Even if He were to promise me the all the riches of the world, NOTHING would be better that KNOWING He would be with me. 
 
Asa felt the same way. He went to work right away making SURE that there was nothing in the way between Judah and God. He tore down ALL the idols in the land of Judah and Benjamin that had been set up from Solomon on down. He cleaned out all the towns that he had taken when he battled Ethiopia. And he swore every man, woman and child to following the Lord. NONE were exempt. He paid special attention to his own house and removed the “queen mother” (his grandmother) from her place of honor because she made a carving of an idol for herself. Her ways were NOT going to stand in the kingdom devoted to the Lord, no matter who she was. Asa not only removed her from her seat but utterly destroyed the image she made.

15 The Spirit of God came on Azariah son of Oded. 2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. 3 For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law. 4 But in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them. 5 In those days it was not safe to travel about, for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil. 6 One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another, because God was troubling them with every kind of distress. 7 But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” 
 
8 When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah son of[a] Oded the prophet, he took courage. He removed the detestable idols from the whole land of Judah and Benjamin and from the towns he had captured in the hills of Ephraim. He repaired the altar of the Lord that was in front of the portico of the Lord’s temple. 
 
9 Then he assembled all Judah and Benjamin and the people from Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon who had settled among them, for large numbers had come over to him from Israel when they saw that the Lord his God was with him.

16 King Asa also deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down, broke it up and burned it in the Kidron Valley. 17 Although he did not remove the high places from Israel, Asa’s heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life. 18 He brought into the temple of God the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated. 
 
19 There was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa’s reign.
