Hello Sunday school teachers, preachers, and students! Welcome to SundaySchoolPreacher.com. In this week’s lesson Malachi like the other minor prophets we have studied speaks truth to power. Like last week with Micah, the religious leaders are corrupt. Malachi shows the importance of leading justly and the need for just leaders. The priests have forsaken the way of righteousness and the people are no better. It has been 1,000 years since Moses wrote Genesis. Now Malachi closes the Old Testament and the post-exilic period with the last word in this book a threat of curse. Townsend Commentary describes Malachi as “an argument between God and the people.” Like last week this is an unusual dialog between God and the people. Like last week Malachi warns Judah of coming judgement if they don't change their ways. And like last week it is the oppression of vulnerable people that will bring God’s judgement. God is utterly disgusted with the priests and will bring them to abject shame and humiliation. If God’s own servants won’t reverence God’s name why would anyone else? In chapter one the people have accused God of not loving them and God responds. God accuses the priests of being disrespectful. In chapter two God threatens to take the priests away from the priesthood and Judah of profaning the covenant. Chapter three covers the coming messenger, how the people have robbed God of tithes and offerings, and the reward of the faithful. And the book closes with the warning of the great day of the LORD. The last chapter of Malachi reminds Judah to remember the teachings of Moses and that God would send the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the LORD. God closes Malachi with this warning saying “so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse.”

ALL DEVOTIONALS LESS THAN FIVE MINUTES LONG. The Creator made the heavens and the earth and entered His creation to solve the sin problem and give hope. Jesus died on the cross to transform all who are willing. The Scriptures are an unfailing guide for living a rational and joy-filled life of selfless goodness toward all. Your Father in heaven desires to give you the kingdom! Many have rejected a caricature of Christianity. And yet, the existence of significant caricatures points to an authentic original. There is a path of hope and an abundant life. Jesus said, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled." You long for something more. You can have it beginning today. You can receive all, but you must give all. Many are not ready to give all. My desire is that this channel will help people taste and see that the Lord is good.

This Sunday we launch into a short series on the book of Malachi. In addition to an overview of the history behind the book, we’ll also provide an overview of it. After that, we will listen to the entire book. Lest that sound dreadfully long, take comfort in the fact that it is only four chapters in length. 
 
Interspersed between the reading of the chapters will be worship songs. The intent is to hear the book in its entirety at one time, very possibly the way it was delivered. We hope you join us for the study of this short, but powerful, book to see yet again how all of Scripture still speaks across millennia and cultures. 
 
If you want to get a jump on Malachi, read through it prior to Sunday. It requires only twenty or so minutes to read the book. Start getting familiar with it.

Malachi 2:1-16 
The Lord Rebukes the Priests 
 
“And now, O priests, this command is for you. 2 If you will not listen, if you will not take it to heart to give honor to my name, says the Lord of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart. 3 Behold, I will rebuke your offspring,[a] and spread dung on your faces, the dung of your offerings, and you shall be taken away with it.[b] 4 So shall you know that I have sent this command to you, that my covenant with Levi may stand, says the Lord of hosts. 5 My covenant with him was one of life and peace, and I gave them to him. It was a covenant of fear, and he feared me. He stood in awe of my name. 6 True instruction[c] was in his mouth, and no wrong was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity. 7 For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people[d] should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts. 8 But you have turned aside from the way. You have caused many to stumble by your instruction. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of hosts, 9 and so I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you do not keep my ways but show partiality in your instruction.” 
 
Judah Profaned the Covenant 
 
10 Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers? 11 Judah has been faithless, and abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem. For Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the Lord, which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god. 12 May the Lord cut off from the tents of Jacob any descendant[e] of the man who does this, who brings an offering to the Lord of hosts! 
 
13 And this second thing you do. You cover the Lord's altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. 14 But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. 15 Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union?[f] And what was the one God[g] seeking?[h] Godly offspring. So guard yourselves[i] in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth. 16 “For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her,[j] says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers[k] his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.”
