Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved. — 1 Timothy 6:1-2 
 
During the time that Paul and Timothy lived, the gospel had a special appeal to a poorer segment of society. But in Ephesus, we don't just have poor people. We have a large segment of the ultra-rich. This means that in the church at Ephesus, they had followers who were both rich (or owners) and poor (or slaves) who would worship together. And this unique socioeconomic dynamic had concern for Paul. So Paul addresses that tension. This is what leaders do, they address potential issues before they become actual issues. That's just good leadership. 
 
But the direction Paul gives here has some incredible marketplace applications for a believing employee. If we apply his direction to our modern context, we will learn a lot about how believing employees should interact in the marketplace with two types of bosses. 
 
First, Paul speaks to the issue of a believer working under the direction of an unbelieving boss. He tells us that we are to regard, or think, about them honorably. Now occasionally, this can be a problem for some believers who work for bosses that do not believe in God. But as Paul states here, we have to take responsibility for addressing any of our "bad thinking" that would result in dishonor. And we know that from time to time, unbelieving bosses will do less than honorable things. But we have to trust that these things will be exposed in God's time. Until then, it is our responsibility to steward how we regard them, because God may use these events to drive them to Him. Thus Paul says we must always be ready by acting honorably so that we bring attention to God's name and teaching when this time comes, instead of discrediting it. Incredible advice! 
 
Second, Paul speaks to the issue of a believer working under the direction of a believing boss. Here we assume that these bosses might go to church with them. But the predicament here is that believers who are employees might try to take advantage of the relationship or generosity of their believing bosses and use it as leverage or permission. Instead, Paul says don't do that. And then commands them to be disrespectful. And then, he declares that this is an incredible opportunity for two believing people to serve all the better because they share common values and a common end. I have often called this convergence. I think of convergence as the combination of believers working together in ministry using their time, talents, and treasures for the greater impact of the kingdom. I believe godly men search for and want experiences like this in life. And I believe it can be found. I am presently blessed to experience this. This ministry right here is the convergence of all I am working together with each of you to impact men for the kingdom. And guess what? We can do this apart from each, but if we do it together, something incredible happens, that is, as Paul says — all the better. 
 
So as, believing employees today work well, and if you are working for believers, then let's work all the better.

Rules For Working For Believing & Unbelieving Bosses | 1 Timothy 6:1-2

Teach and urge these things. If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. — 1 Timothy 6:2b-5 
 
At this point, Paul begins the conclusion of his letter to Timothy. And it's going to feel like he is just throwing a bunch of random thoughts at him. But he is not. He's repeating, reminding, and reiterating everything he has already stated. Which, by the way, is what good mentors do. We need to remember that saying something once is never enough. I need reminders too, so I like it when people repeat and reiterate. When I am in the gym, I want to be reminded when my lift doesn't look right. When I am not performing in my job, I like to be reminded about a goal we are trying to hit. When I get lazy in my leadership as a father, I want to be reminded to step it up. Why? Because these people and their promptings help me to perform and lead better. And that's why Paul repeats, reminds, and reiterates some things to Timothy. 
 
And the predominant item on Paul's mind as a mentor is inaccurate teaching in Ephesus. This means that his letter begins and ends with the same topic. And he wants Timothy to get into these Ephesian churches and address this bad teaching with good teaching that agrees with the things that Jesus spoke. 
 
I feel this same burden every day with you. I feel the weight of teaching accurate doctrine that aligns with the teachings of Jesus. The weight of this is private to me, and yet it's profound as I sit to write each day. Because as I consider what I want to write or speak to you, I know that the words I use have a bearing on the things you think and the way you believe, and I feel this burden to get it exactly right. Which is what I hope you want. 
 
So back to the text. 
 
Then Paul drops in three signs, or indicators, of an inaccurate teacher. They are all found in verse four: 
 
Inaccurate teachers are arrogant. 
Inaccurate teachers spew senseless ideologies. 
Inaccurate teachers argue with meaningless words and terms. 
 
Does this sound familiar? It should. This is exactly what is happening in the world. It's happening today at an unstoppable rate. And it is finding its way into every institution, including churches, and people are buying into it and them. 
 
So the call to action from this is two-fold. First, we have to be on the lookout for arrogant people who spew senseless ideas from made-up terminology. Second, we have to counter this with accurate teaching based on the accurate and sensible teaching of Jesus Christ. Which assumes four things: 
 
We are getting the truth from the book of truth. 
We are actively discerning truth from untruth. 
We are applying the truth to our lives. 
We are countering untruth by teaching the truth. 
 
So what do you need to do differently today? Share that below. And let's be people of the truth, who live by the truth, discern the truth, and tell the truth, and not be proud people who spew senseless ideologies from made-up terminologies.

Three Signs of Inaccurate Teachers | 1 Timothy 6:2-5

"Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity." 
 
 
I want you to remember that all the Old Testament was written primarily to the nation of Israel, and Israel was under the Law. Even when you come into Christ's earthly ministry, it's really just an extension of the Old Testament program, as Christ came to fulfill the Abrahamic Covenant, the promises He had made to Abraham. 
 
 
So when Jesus came on the scene in the New Testament, Israel was still under the Law, and the temple was still in operation, so everything that Jesus said in His earthly ministry was under the Law of Moses. There was not one word uttered to give us any idea that the Age of Grace would be coming to the Gentiles. (non-Jews) 
 
 
But when Israel continued to reject everything back there in the first 7 chapters of Acts, God finally made a fork in the road, and Israel went into a dispersion that has lasted even to this very day, although she has been coming back to the land for several years now. And then in chapter 9 the Apostle Paul was saved on the road to Damascus, and he was immediately told "that he would be sent far hence to the Gentiles." 
 
 
So ever since we began our study in Romans, we have come all the way through most of these epistles of Paul, and this is really where we have to be as Gentile believers in this Age of Grace to understand what God is saying to us.

Here again, this is something that we have nothing to do with because slavery was part and parcel of the ancient world. As hard as it is to believe, Christianity did not abolish it as quickly as we think they should have. So, slavery was still part and parcel of their economy. But, again Paul admonishes masters as well as the servants to adhere to their Christian principles. So, he wrote, servants if you are under the yoke count your masters worthy of all honour: 
 
 
I Timothy 6:1b-6:2a 
 
"...that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are (what?) brethren;..." 
 
 
Now, the perfect example is, of course, the little letter to Philemon. Because Philemon was a slave master and Onesimus was one of the slaves that had run away. We will probably touch on that in our next few lessons, but all of these various levels of society were still one in Christ. Now reading on in verse 2. 
 
 
I Timothy 6:2b 
 
"...but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort." 
 
 
I have made comment about this before. Why did God sanction slavery in the first place? You want to remember, we are so programmed to our Western culture, that unless you are a student of history you are prone to not realize that all the way up through antiquity, the masses had no education. They had no technical prowess, or anything like that. So the only place they could function would be under the control of peers that were craftsmen and so forth. They couldn't handle it on their own. 
 
 
But, in everything that God ever introduced even though it was good, as He intended it, what did sinful men do with it? Well, they adulterated it. And, instead of masters being benevolent and taking care of their servants, what did they do? They took advantage of them and they abused them and they tortured them, and all these things. That is not God's fault. That's sinful men.
