Hard Verses Episode 18: You are a Bloody Husband; Exodus 4:24-26. The Problem. Exo 4:20 And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in his hand. Exo 4:21 And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. Exo 4:22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: Exo 4:23 And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn. Exo 4:24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him. Moses seems to be sending his family away while he is going to prepare to go to Egypt. 3. The Lord sought to kill him. Who is him and why does God want to kill him? 4. What is the deal with Zipporah circumcising her son and calling her husband a bloody husband? The Solution. Exo 4:20 And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in his hand. Exo 4:26 So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision. 1. What is going on? Moses just met God at the burning bush in chapter four. He has met with Jethro his father-in-law and asked to be released to go let God’s people go vs. 18. Now he is on his way to Egypt. 2. Where did his family go? Moses set me on an ass (Septuagint states beasts, Hebrew idiom, the ass to mean even the plural of beasts.) or that Zipporah and baby were riding while Gershom led the beast. It would seem that they stayed at the inn before heading back to Jethro. Ex. 18:2-5 speaks of Jethro bringing the family out to Moses in the wilderness. 3. The Lord sought to kill him. Who is him and why does God want to kill him? It seems that Moses was the one stricken by some severe sickness. Zipporah in seeing this, realized that it was because one of her children was uncircumcised and picked up a sharp rock and circumcised the child and threw it at the feet of Moses on which the Lord “let him go.” 4. What is the deal with Zipporah circumcising her son and calling her husband a bloody husband? It would seem that Moses was unable to perform the procedure and worrying that her husband was about to die, picked up the rock and did a makeshift circumcision. It was probably from her disdain of the procedure that it was not done. This would be the reason for the outburst of the bloody husband remark. Gen 17 actually records the first circumcision with Abram and his household. It states that Abram circumcised everyone, young and old and even himself. It does not necessarily say that Abraham did that to himself. The lesson for us today 1. Don’t wait to do what God wants you to do. 2. Even if things are going to be uncomfortable, if God requires it, do it. 3. God is serious about obeying His command. He was going to kill Moses. 2Th 1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 2Th 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 2Th 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; Tools I Used Burton Coffman (e-sword module) Albert Barnes (e-sword module) Adam Clarke (e-sword module) Jamieson Faucet and Brown (e-sword module) Keil and Delitzsch (e-sword module) Call to action. God gives Moses power to work miracles. (1-9) Moses is loth to be sent, Aaron is to assist him. (10-17) Moses leaves Midian, God's message to Pharaoh. (18-23) God's displeasure against Moses, Aaron meets him, The people believe them. (24-31) 
( Exodus 4:1-9) 
Moses objects, that the people would not take his word, unless he showed them some sign. God gives him power to work miracles. But those who are now employed to deliver God's messages to men, need not the power to work miracles: their character and their doctrines are to be tried by that word of God to which they appeal. These miracles especially referred to the miracles of the Lord Jesus Christ. It belonged to Him only, to cast the power of the devil out of the soul, and to heal the soul of the leprosy of sin; and so it was for Him first to cast the devil out of the body, and to heal the leprosy of the body. 
( Exodus 4:10-17) 
Moses continued backward to the work God designed him for; there was much of cowardice, slothfulness, and unbelief in him. We must not judge of men by the readiness of their discourse. A great deal of wisdom and true worth may be with a slow tongue. God sometimes makes choice of those as his messengers, who have the least of the advantages of art or nature, that his grace in them may appear the more glorious. Christ's disciples were no orators, till the Holy Spirit made them such. God condescends to answer the excuse of Moses. Even self-diffidence, when it hinders us from duty, or clogs us in duty, is very displeasing to the Lord. But while we blame Moses for shrinking from this dangerous service, let us ask our own hearts if we are not neglecting duties more easy, and less perilous. The tongue of Aaron, with the head and heart of Moses, would make one completely fit for this errand. God promises, I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth. Even Aaron, who could speak well, yet could not speak to purpose, unless God gave constant teaching and help; for without the constant aid of Divine grace, the best gifts will fail. 
( Exodus 4:18-23) 
After God had appeared in the bush, he often spake to Moses. Pharaoh had hardened his own heart against the groans and cries of the oppressed Israelites; and now God, in the way of righteous judgment, hardens his heart against the teaching of the miracles, and the terror of the plagues. But whether Pharaoh will hear, or whether he will forbear, Moses must tell him, Thus saith the Lord. He must demand a discharge for Israel, Let my son go; not only my servant, whom thou hast no right to detain, but my son. It is my son that serves me, and therefore must be spared, must be pleaded for. In case of refusal I will slay thy son, even thy first-born. 
 
( Exodus 4:24-31) 
God met Moses in anger. The Lord threatened him with death or sent sickness upon him, as the punishment of his having neglected to circumcise his son. When God discovers to us what is amiss in our lives, we must give all diligence to amend it speedily. This is the voice of every rod; it calls us to return to Him that smites us. God sent Aaron to meet Moses. The more they saw of God's bringing them together, the more pleasant their interview was. The elders of Israel met them in faith, and were ready to obey them. It often happens, that less difficulty is found than was expected, in such undertakings as are according to the will of God, and for his glory. Let us but arise and try at our proper work, the Lord will be with us and prosper us. If Israel welcomed the tidings of their deliverance, and worshipped the Lord, how should we welcome the glad tidings of redemption, embrace it in faith, and adore the Redeemer

We exist to glorify God, by building a community of believers who are actively committed to knowing, applyingand proclaiming the Word of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.We will seek to accomplish that mission through the following:
Sunday Celebration – Although the Sunday morning meeting is not the only effort of the church it is the first and most centraleffort. The Sunday meeting is a crucial component to every facet of the mission. Our goal, then, is to make our Sundaygatherings our primary concern. On Sundays we will seek to worship our Great God and Savior Jesus Christ with joy throughgospel-centered songs, the exercising of our spiritual gifts and the faithful expository preaching of His precious Word.
Home Groups – Although our Sunday Celebration is central it is not the sole meeting of the church. Our home group meetingshelp us to apply the gospel and flesh out in fuller measure the life of the local church.

Pharaoh had many opportunities to do the right thing, but he didn’t so his arrogance had cost him his dynasty. God did not force Pharaoh to harden his heart, but rather used Pharaoh’s pride and already hardened heart to enact his plan of redemption. When Moses and Aaron politely but firmly ask that Pharaoh lets Israel go, he sabotages his own economy by making Israel work harder with less resources just out of spite. This in turn makes Israel turn against their liberator and saviour. 
 
Leaving Egypt is hard. Leaving our sin is hard. Jesus knows how bad this slavery is not only for us but for our relationship with God. We need the son to save us and to set us free. It’s never easy and freedom is not easily won. There is opposition and difficulty. Yet, through adoption in Jesus, we are as God’s firstborn son Israel, and so receive the same promises and loyalty that that entails. Christ is faithful and he will surely free us. Don’t give up to turn back to Egypt, but cling to Jesus to the end.
