In 1960, Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church was first organized in a small frame building at 3602 Drew Street in the Third Ward area of Houston under the leadership of Reverend Norris Terry.  Reverend Terry resigned as Pastor after four years of service.

• Reverend Willie E. Powell 1964 to 1981
He was instrumental in moving the church from it's original location.

• Reverend Curtis Wallace 1981 to 1990
Under his leadership a larger place of worship was built adjacent to the existing edifice.  The old building was renovated unto classrooms, a spacious cafeteria and a small Chapel.  Reverend Wallace resigned as Pastor in 1990.

• Reverend Terry K. Anderson 1991 to Present
Lilly Grove called Reverend Terry K. Anderson of Eunice, Louisiana to become the fourth Pastor, on December 18, 1990. Reverend Anderson began his tenure as Pastor on the first Sunday in February 1991.

Christians should pray Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3:16–19 for themselves and for the church. In this sermon on Genesis 26:17–18 titled “Revival Sermon: To Know Him,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones explains how today’s church is like the Laodicean church, thinking they are rich when they are poor. All are blind to their true spiritual state. But, as Dr. Lloyd-Jones states, “we must have a true concern for the glory of God.” Preliminary to revival is a thirst for God. Dr. Lloyd-Jones reveals the church’s need for vital living water, much like the need of water Isaac had from the wells of Abraham. The church must be careful of serious hindrances to that flow of water such as dead orthodoxy, and the failure to seek God, to know God, and to apply the truth. Christians must also examine themselves in light of Scripture. There is a right and a wrong way of self-examination and one’s orthodoxy determines which way they will go. The Christian should never be depressed or miserable, but some Christians are because of a wrong self-examination. When a person truly knows Christ, their sins will drive them to Him, not further from Him. Dr. Lloyd-Jones concludes that this comes with a desperate need for prayer, for a person who is burdened is one who prays.

1. Waiting. No one likes to wait. Why? Because we want everything now. 
2. How many bad decisions have you made because you didn’t want to wait? 
 
ILLUS – Buying my first car 
 
3. In Genesis 15, we are told that God promised Abraham that an heir would come from his own body, even though he was advanced in years. 
4. After considering God’s promise, his old age, and most importantly, the character of the One who promised, we’re told that. . . 
 
Genesis 15:6, Abram believed God and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. 
 
5. Genesis 15 could be characterized as Abraham’s “mountain-top experience” with God. 
6. But we are quickly dragged into the “valley of testing” in Genesis 16. 
7. In fact, the impact of Abraham and Sarah’s decision in Genesis 16 is still felt to this very day. Why? 
8. Because Abraham and Sarah failed to wait for God’s best. 
9. From this passage, we will uncover principles to help us patiently wait for God’s best because “God’s Best is Worth the Wait.” 
Genesis 16:1-6 
 
Transition – While you are waiting for God’s best, please remember that. . . 
 
I. God Knows Your Pain (1) 
 
• When the wait is long and it looks like there is no relief in sight for the problems that plague you, it’s difficult to wait for God’s best. 
• Questions about God’s love for us or His ability to deliver us can flood our hearts and minds. 
• At times it may feel like God is far away and your prayers are unanswered; the silence can be discouraging and overwhelming. 
 
Transition – What was Sarah’s pain? 
 
A. Sarah’s Pain: No Child 
1. For Sarah, being childless was her deepest wound. 
2. For Abraham, the matter was settled in Genesis 15 because had God promised he would have a son from his own, old body. 
 
Genesis 15:4, Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.” 
 
3. But for Sarah, the matter was unresolved. 
4. Abraham was specifically mentioned, but Sarah was not. 
5. Yet, it is clearly implied that Sarah was included. 
a. Note: Emphasis on “Abram’s wife” (1). 
b. Conclusion: God included Sarah in His promise to Abraham because they were married. 
6. Children are a blessing from God. 
a. In that day, there was great stigma for those who were childless. 
b. Their culture believed that parents lived on through their children. 
7. If a husband and wife were childless, they were considered cursed with extinction. 
a. No child? “What did you do wrong? There must be sin in your life.” 
b. No child? “God’s hand is against you. He has cursed you.” 
 
APPL – Whatever your issue, struggle, or pain; God knows and God cares for you. 
• Your heavenly Father invites you to bring your deepest wounds, anxieties, and fears to Him. 
• God is waiting for you. 
• Cast your cares upon the Lord and wait for His best. 
• God’s answers are perfect and so is His timing. David said. . . 
 
Psalm 34:4, 6, I sought the LORD, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. . . . This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. 
 
 
 
B. Sarah’s Temptation: “I need a back-up plan.” 
1. Hagar was an Egyptian maid. 
a. She was young and beautiful. 
b. She was loyal, or so Sarah thought. 
c. But as an Egyptian maid, Hagar was outside of the LORD’S covenant with Abraham because she was not Abraham’s wife. 
2. It is also important to note that Hagar was acquired because of compromise. 
3. There was a famine in the land of Canaan so Abraham traveled down to Egypt for food (Genesis 12:10). 
4. But fear gripped Abraham’s heart as he entered Egypt and he forgot the LORD’S promise that he had just received. 
 
Genesis 12:2-3, And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.
