Give Glory Through Unity | John 17:22–23 | Our Daily Bread Video Devotional

“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.” (John 17:20 NLT) 
 
 
Jesus and His disciples were together for about three years. There’s no telling how many times they prayed together during that time. In John 17, He prays with them for one of the last times before His arrest. 
 
 
There are three parts to His prayer. In verses 1–5, Jesus prays for Himself. He was facing unimaginable suffering. He was about to take the punishment for the world’s sins. He was about to experience His Father’s perfect wrath. 
 
 
That explains why Jesus wanted to confirm the connection between them. “Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you” (verse 1 NLT). Jesus was ready to complete God’s mission. To finish the work of salvation. To make eternal life possible. When we picture eternity, we may think of heavenly streets of gold and angels praising God. But Jesus said eternal life is “to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth” (verse 3 NLT). 
 
 
Jesus also revealed the primary purpose for His saving work: to glorify God. And if we follow Him, that should be our primary purpose too. The apostle Paul wrote, “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31 NLT). Everything we do, from the biggest moments of our lives to the smallest daily decisions, is an opportunity to give glory to God. That’s what we were created to do. And that’s where we find genuine fulfillment and joy. 
 
 
In verses 6–19, Jesus prays for His disciples. Those men would face the consequences of their discipleship. All but one, John, would follow Jesus to their deaths at the hands of their enemies. But they were equipped for battle. Jesus said, “Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world” (verse 18 NLT). Jesus asked God to protect them—not only from the persecution to come but also from spiritual doubt and despair. Jesus would no longer be around to encourage them and lift their spirits. He wanted to make sure they were prepared for what lay ahead. 
 
 
The key to spiritual well-being is joy. Jesus prayed, “Now I am coming to you. I told them many things while I was with them in this world so they would be filled with my joy” (verse 13 NLT). 
 
 
If your joy has diminished, ask God to restore it, as the psalmist did in Psalm 51:8. In Matthew 21:22, Jesus says, “You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it” (NLT). God wants to ignite the spark of joy within you so that you can see the world from His perspective. 
 
 
In verses 20–26, Jesus prays for all believers. His chief request is that we remain unified. There’s strength in numbers. If we can trust that our fellow believers are allies, our ministry benefits. Unity is also a way of identifying believers. God wants unbelievers to see the closeness that exists among us. That can be a powerful draw for some. Our mission is to communicate God’s love to the world. Unity is one of the most powerful tools we have to accomplish it.

We are a church that believes in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, therefore we exist to know Jesus and make him known in the valley and throughout the world. We desire to bring renewal, restoration and redemption as we tell those around us of the life-giving message found in Jesus. Our Mission

The name - Illuminate Community Church. The word "illuminate" means, "to shine the light." It's our mission to shine the light on Jesus by knowing Him and making Him known. There are many metaphors in the Bible that use light as a symbol of God's truth. Jesus said this about himself in John 8:12 "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

I am so thankful for the unity we have as a church family. 
 
Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Many tables will be fully reunited this year and yet there’s a good chance that you might be facing some family drama. There remains at least a few things in the world that continue to divide. This is supposed to be the occasion when we look forward to family time but what if things are a bit dysfunctional right now? 
 
Maybe you’ve noticed that some Christians bring the worst of the world into the church. Social media might carry some blame?? We find ourselves getting irritated at what others have to say. They push our buttons and rub us the wrong way. As a Christian, you think to yourself, “God, I know I’m supposed to love others but can we please make an exception? This person is just not lovable! “How am I supposed to love someone I feel like ignoring? How do I get along with someone who doesn’t get along with me?” 
 
What if these people attend your church? 
 
So when Jesus prayed for future believers in John 17 isn’t it interesting that he said this…“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. John 17:20-21 
 
Do you see the point of Christians loving Christians? Jesus says there is a powerful result. Unity creates belief. How will the world believe that Jesus was sent by God? Not if we solve every controversy. Not if we are unanimous on each vote. Not if we never make a doctrinal error. When we love one another the results are worth every bit of sacrifice. 
 
But how do we do create unity? See the answer below… 
 
Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Philippians 3:8 
 
There’s a five-ingredient recipe here for you to serve unity on this year’s holiday table: truth, sympathy, love, compassion and humility.

I am so thankful for the unity we have as a church family.

In Jesus' final hours He prayed to the Father for Himself, His Disciples, and all believers yet to come. These were the most important things on His heart and mind. What should be predominant in a believers mind? To love The Lord our God with our heart, soul and mind. A divine, dedicated love. 
 
Jesus, in His final hours prayed for all believers to come. He wanted us to walk in The Spirit, love Him above all else and seek out those who are lost. It is His desire that we walk in unity, as believers and as a Church. We become one with Him and one another when we are born again. Made brand new. 
 
Jesus commanded that we love one another and demands unity in the lives of believers. This was on Jesus’ heart in the last few hours of His ministry. We should listen. Simply~love. 
 
Love Him as He loved us. Love others as He loves others. Be one with others as we are one with Him.
