Though God intended the Sabbath to be a day of rest, keeping the Sabbath became difficult work by New Testament times. The oral traditions of the Pharisees had become weighty burdens-burdens the Lord did not mean for His people to bear. In this passage, Jesus demonstrates mercy and the true intent of the Sabbath as He and His disciples meet physical needs in the face of strong opposition.

Why Jesus References THIS David Story You've Never Heard | Matthew 12:1-9

Matthew 12 : 1-25 Part1

J & S Biblical Productions presents to the public the stories, people, morals and principles of the New and Old Testaments illustrating them in modern language so that the people and lessons of the 1st century and earlier are easily understood.  Sometimes practical explanations and commentaries by fictional experts are added to explain the lifestyles of shepherds, fishermen, farmers and kings to our modern viewers.  The stress is on learning the bible thru live action and illustrations rather than by sermons, lectures, doctrines and dogma.  The videos are kept to 5 to 10 minutes for the benefit of children.

The purpose of the Sabbath as a day of rest goes back as far as the book of Genesis and is a legal part of the Torah as one of the 10 Commandments. The Jewish Talmud specifies 39 categories of prohibition on the Sabbath, but in practice was and still is a matter of debate among various Jewish traditions. Jesus felt there are reasonable expectations based on basic human needs. Rabbis who would agree with him provided one avoids tools that would qualify the activity as work. This story then is one of those exceptions. 
 
What makes this story interesting is that the Pharisees did not challange Jesus but were going to get together later and discuss how they would go after him for some kind of Jewish violation. Jesus could have waited until sundown. Significantly the healing did not involve any "melakhot" or physical effort. Jesus simply spoke, and did not touch the man or perform any physical act, and the hand was healed. This story is repeated with slight variations in Mark 3: 1-7 and Luke 6: 6-11

Christ here does not abolish the Sabbath, but restores it. In appealing to King David and the priests, our Lord teaches us that the ceremonial observance of the Law must yield to the Law of necessity (nature) and the Law of mercy (grace).
