James Nisbet's Church Pulpit Commentary - 1 Kings 17:9

THE UNEXPECTED IN LIFE‘Arise, get thee to Zarephath.… I have commanded a widow woman to sustain thee.’ 1 Kings 17:9 I. Notice how God often takes us by unexpected roads.—From Cherith, by the command of God, Elijah was sent to the little town of Zarephath. Now Zarephath was a Sidonian town. It lay on the sea-coast between Tyre and Sidon. It was not a place where the true God was worshipped; it was a haunt and home of foul idolatry. It was indeed the last place in the world where we should look... read more

The Reign Of Ahab King Of Israel c. 872-851 BC (1 Kings 16:29 to 1 Kings 22:40 ). The reigns of the previous seven kings of Judah and Israel have been covered in a short space (1 Kings 15:1 to 1 Kings 16:28). The reign of Ahab will now take up almost the whole of the remainder of 1 Kings (from 1 Kings 16:29 to 1 Kings 22:40). This, however, was not due to the importance of Ahab politically, but occurs because he was in continual conflict with the prophets of YHWH. It was these conflicts... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Kings 17:2-7

Elijah Is Fed By Ravens At The Brook Cherith (1 Kings 17:2-7 ). Having made his public declaration Elijah was then advised by YHWH to go to the east of Jordan, to one of the wadis that fed the Jordan, where he was promised that he would be fed by ‘rbm. Pointed as ‘orebim this would indicate ‘ravens/crows’. Pointed as ‘arabim it would indicate wandering Arabs. (The original text had no pointing). In a time of drought the Arabs would have dying cattle from which they could supply meat to... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Kings 17:4

“ And it shall be, that you will drink of the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” There he would be able to drink water from the Wadi, regularly refreshing himself, and he was promised that YHWH would send the ravens (or wandering Arabs) to feed him. This is not strictly comparable with Exodus 16:0, although it similarly indicates that YHWH can feed His people how He wills. 1 Kings 17:5 ‘ So he went and did according to the word of YHWH, for he went and dwelt by the... read more

YHWH Makes Provision For Elijah With A Widow Of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:8-16 ). The water in the Wadi Cherith having almost dried up, God now directed Elijah to go to Zarephath, where He would arrange for a widow woman to provide his need. Zarephath was on the Lebanese coast road between Tyre and Sidon, thirteen kilometres (nine miles) south of Sidon. It was mentioned in the 13th century BC papyrus Anastasi 1. It was also mentioned by Sennacherib and Esarhaddon. To this Phoenician town Elijah... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Kings 17:17-24

Elijah Raises The Widow’s Son To Life (1 Kings 17:17-24 ). In this final miracle God reveals His power of life and death. Sadly many people would have been dying in the area at the time because of the famine, and, when many are dying, death becomes almost accepted as inevitable. The incident brings out that in the midst of those scenes of death YHWH demonstrated that He was present as the Lord of life on behalf of those who looked to His prophets. The lesson is clear. Had they but trusted in... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Kings 17:1-24

1 Kings 17:1-Jeremiah : . Elijah is Fed by Ravens, and Raises the Widow’ s Son.— Elijah appeared suddenly: we hear nothing of his birth or parentage. He simply announced to Ahab, in the name of Yahweh, “ before whom I stand” ( cf. Jeremiah 35:19), that there should be no rain for three years. Elijah is described as “ one of the sojourners of Gilead.” Probably the LXX is correct in saying that he came from Tishbe ( mg.) , said to be in Gilead to distinguish it from another Tishbe in Galilee (... read more

Thus God rescues him from the fury of Ahab and Jezebel, who he knew would seek to destroy him. Quest. Why did not Ahab seize upon him immediately upon these words? Answ. 1. This must be ascribed to God’s overruling providence, who hath the hearts of all men in his hands, and hath oft protected his prophets and servants in such cases. 2. He might say this not by word of mouth, but by letter and message sent to him; as that word is sometimes used, as Exodus 18:6. read more

i.e. I have decreed or appointed. Or, I shall command, i.e. effectually move them, by instincts and inclinations which I shall put into them, which shall be as forcible with them as a law or command is to men. God is said to command both brute creatures, as Amos 9:3; Jonah 2:10, and senseless things, as Job 38:11,Job 38:12; Psalms 78:23; Isaiah 5:6; Isaiah 45:12, when he causeth them to do the things which he intends to effect by them. I have commanded the ravens; which he names, and chooseth... read more

Bread and flesh; not raw, but boiled by the ministry of some angel or man, and left in some place or places till the ravens came for it, in all which there is nothing incredible, considering the power and providence of God. In the morning and in the evening, i.e. for dinner and supper, according to the custom. See Genesis 43:25; Ruth 2:14; Luke 14:12; Acts 10:9,Acts 10:10. read more
