J. Vernon McGee

J. Vernon McGee (1904 - 1988)

Brother McGee pastored an inter-denominational church, Church Of The Open Door in California. In 1967 he started the now famous "Through The Bible" radio program that airs on thousands of stations world-wide.

His burden has been to do systematic simple bible teaching to equip believers, protect them against false doctrines and share the whole counsel of God. He also has been a guest lecturer at the Dallas Theological Seminary.

John Vernon McGee, Th.D., LL.D, was an ordained Presbyterian minister (PCUS) who later pastored an interdenominational church, a Bible teacher, theologian, and was also a radio minister.

He was born in Hillsboro, Texas. He graduated with his B.Div. from Columbia Theological Seminary and his Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas. He served Presbyterian churches in Decatur, Georgia; Nashville, Tennessee; and Cleburne, Texas before he moved with his wife to Pasadena, California, where he accepted a position at the Lincoln Avenue Presbyterian Church.

He moved from Pasadena to Los Angeles and became the pastor of the Church of the Open Door in 1949, where he continued as pastor until 1970. McGee also served as the chair of the Bible department at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (currently Biola University) and as a visiting lecturer at Dallas Theological Seminary.

In 1967, he began the Thru the Bible Radio Network program. In a systematic study of each book of the Bible, Dr. McGee took his listeners from Genesis to Revelation in a two and one-half year "Bible bus trip," as he called it. After retiring from the pastorate in January, 1970, and realizing that two and a half years was not enough time to teach the Bible, McGee completed another study of the entire Bible in a five year period. Thru the Bible is broadcast on Trans World Radio in the UK every weekday.

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

As a student pastor, Dr. McGee's first church was located on a red clay hill in Midway Georgia. After completing his education (earning his A.B. from Southwestern University in Memphis, Tennessee; his B.D. from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia; his Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas), and after pastoring Presbyterian churches in Decatur, GA, Nashville, TN, and Cleburne, TX, he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, where he accepted a call to the Lincoln Avenue Presbyterian Church. He recalls this period as the happiest in his life, with a young family and a young congregation whom he loved.

Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic, Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970. Here he began a daily radio broadcast called "High Noon Bible Class" on a single station.

Dr. McGee began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Today the program airs on over 400 stations each day in the United States and Canada, is heard in more than 100 languages around the world and is broadcast worldwide via the Internet.

During his last few years failing health demanded the cancellation of many speaking engagements. This was extremely distressing to him. There was no recurrence of an earlier bout with cancer during this time, only a weakening heart. Back in 1965, after radical surgery, the doctors had given him 6 months to live. The Lord gave him 23 years.

Dr. McGee and the Board of Directors planned in advance how the program would continue in the event of Dr. McGee's homegoing. The message would remain the same and the "voice" of Thru the Bible Radio would continue to be Dr. McGee, through the use of the taped 5-year program, except for those foreign language broadcasts, where the producers use the printed 5-volume Bible study to translate and produce the program.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, a few minutes after a visit with the Associate Director of Thru the Bible, alert and in conversation centered around his concern for the continuance of the radio ministry, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.

Three Worlds in One

The three worlds in one - the world that was, the world that is, and the world that will be - are described for us in the third chapter of Peter's second letter: This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you, in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance, that ye may be mindf... 阅读更多

Tongues on Fire

Proper warning must be given to those who are gossips: This study may bring a measure of discomfort of mind and heart. However, a little Christian courage will be helpful in looking frankly at this subject given to us by James-namely, hell on fire. If any man among you seem to be religious, and brid... 阅读更多

Listen to a Picture

In Atlanta, Georgia, I was walking down a street a few years ago and noticed that one of the art galleries was having an exhibit with the theme, "Listen to a Picture." They are trying in the South to recover some of the rich culture that has been lost in the past few decades. There has been a declin... 阅读更多

Why the Flood?

When rains come to Southern California, the metropolitan newspapers carry headlines: FLOOD DISASTER. It sounds like Noah's day, and for those who live in the flooded areas, it does mean disaster. But for Southern California generally, the rains are worth millions of dollars and are a great blessing.... 阅读更多

From the Top of the Mount of Olives You Can See Forever

A great many thoughtful and knowledgeable people are wondering if we are approaching the end of this civilization as we know it. At the present time there is an unusual interest in what the Bible has to say about the conclusion of man's little day upon this earth. Any study which deals with these fi... 阅读更多

Wanted: Stretcher Bearers

And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was reported that he was in the house. And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door; and he preached the word unto them. And they come unto him, bringing one... 阅读更多

Living the Christian Life God's Way

Before me is a letter, typical of many I have received recently, that tells the story of failure in the Christian life. The man writes, "It seems that I know you because I have listened to you for so long. Several of your recent sermons have seemed especially for my encouragement, and, brother, do I... 阅读更多

Gifts of the Spirit

How wonderful it is to know that every believer has a gift from the Holy Spirit. I can't think of anything more thrilling than to know that God has given you and me a gift to function in this world, and that we are to be partners with Jesus Christ in the tremendous enterprise of making Him known! Women's Place in the Local Church

I exhort, therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men, for kings, and for all that are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God, our S... 阅读更多

Was Abraham Justified by Works?

God's Test ...For now I know that thou fearest God.... (Genesis 22:12) And it came to pass after these things, that God did test Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of M... 阅读更多

God So Loved

God loves us! There is a sinking feeling of total inadequacy as I come to this verse of Scripture. I am not able to communicate to you the vastness of the love of God, the intensity of that love, the overwhelming goodness of our God. Yet as you and I move into this new age in which a crisis looms as... 阅读更多

World Dominion - Whose Will it Be?

The Times of the Gentiles There are two worldwide kingdoms ahead of us, and we may be closer to them than we think we are. Micaiah and a God-Aimed Arrow

There is the ever-present temptation when we come to the record given in 1 and 2 Kings to emphasize some phase of the life of Elijah. The Cross is God's Christmas Tree

What Can Believers Do in Days of Apostasy?

The Apostasy Has Arrived The church is in a very sad state at the present hour. The thing that is alarming about it is that the church is satisfied with it. The Dark Side of Love

The little Book of Zephaniah will never take the place of the Gospel of John as number one in Bible popularity. The God of All Comfort

This message of comfort opens on a very high level and an exalted plane of praise: Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.
