Father, you are the Maker of men and the Author of life. In love you made us in your image and predestined us to the adoption of sons. We honor you, in part, by treating each other as we wish to be treated. Yet we have sinned by refusing to resist hurtful and malicious thoughts of our neighbors and by failing to be charitable toward them. We have been harsh rather than compassionate, proud rather than meek, cruel rather than kind, hard-hearted rather than patient and forgiving. We have not done all we can to protect and defend the innocent, especially those who have no way of defending themselves. How shamefully have we harbored anger, hatred, bitterness, and a sinful desire for revenge! In these ways we have despised our neighbors, transgressed your law, and dishonored your sacred and majestic name. Please forgive us for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Minister: What is your only comfort in life and in death?
