This CD contains: + THOMAS MANTON Thomas Manton was "one of the most eminent of the Nonconformist divines." He was born in 1620 and died in 1677. He was chosen to write "The Epistle to the Reader: Especially Heads of Families" of the famous Westminster standards. "Received episcopal institution in 1661. Resigned in 1662, on account of the Act of Uniformity (which among other wicked, Satanic enactments, its principal terms required a "declaration of 'unfeigned assent and consent' to everything contained in the Book of Common Prayer, re-ordination for those not episcopally ordained" and, most evil of all, "a renunciation of the Solemn League and Covenant. Knowing that the Puritans would not submit to such terms, the Authorities framed the Act to secure their expulsion" cf. Sermons of the Great Ejection by Iain Murray [Banner of Truth, reprinted 1962]). He was a man of great learning and extensive reading, of a sound judgement, and had the art of reducing volumes of divinity into a narrow compass. According to Charnock, he was the best collector of sense of the age. Dr. Bates says , 'A clear judgement, rich fancy, strong memory, and happy elocution, met in him, and were excellently improved by diligent study'" (James Darling, Cyclopaedia Bibliographica, 1854, pp. 1953-1954). Manton's better known volumes, such as his commentary on James and Jude and his Sermons on Psalm 119, as well as a host of other practical preaching, teaching and Scriptural exposition, are all found in his Works. Thomas Manton was an English Puritan clergyman.
Born at Lydeard St Lawrence, Somerset, Manton was educated at Blundell's School and then at Hart Hall, Oxford where he graduated BA in 1639. Joseph Hall, bishop of Norwich, ordained him deacon the following year: he never took priest's orders, holding that he was properly ordained to the ministerial office. He was then appointed town lecturer of Collumpton in Devon. In the winter of 1644-1645, he was appointed to preach at St Mary's Church in the parish of Stoke Newington in Middlesex, where in 1646 he was joined by Alexander Popham as the parish's ruling elder and began to build a reputation as a forthright and popular defender of Reformed principles.
Although Manton is little known now, in his day he was held in as much esteem as men like John Owen. He was best known for his skilled expository preaching, and was a favourite of John Charles Ryle, who championed his republication in the mid-19th century. His finest work is probably his Exposition of James.
