      Paul Zaspel was for many years pastor of Word of Life Baptist Church in Pottsville, PA. and adjunct professor of New Testament at Penn State University (Schuylkill Campus). He is now a part of the pastoral ministry of Reformed Baptist Church of Franconia, PA, and instructor in Bible and theology at To Every Tribe Ministries in Brownsville, TX. He also holds a B.A. in Bible, with a minor in Greek (1977) and an M.A. in Theology (1979). Before coming to Word of Life he served churches in Virginia and Minnesota.

When we lose hope in ourselves, when the present becomes dark and the future black before us, when effort after effort has issued only in disheartening failure, and our sin looms big before our despairing eyes; when our hearts hate and despise themselves, and we remember that God is greater than our hearts and cannot abide the least iniquity; the Spirit whom He has sent to bring us to Him still labors with us, not in indifference or hatred, but in pitying love. In short, Christianity is a religion that has a message to proclaim, and thus it is preeminently a doctrinal religion. It seeks by the propagation of truth to save the lost and rule their lives.

If we have no doctrine, we have no Christianity. If we have scanty doctrine, we have scanty Christianity. If we have profoundly informed convictions, we will have a solid and substantial Christianity. If we do not think right thoughts about God, we will not worship him as he desires and deserves to be worshiped, and we will not experience the life intended for us. If we misunderstand Christian doctrine, it will result in a distortion or dwarfing of our religious life in some measure.
