On Tiger-Mothers, and Good-Enough Christian Mothers | Dreaming Beneath the Spires
So I read through Amy Chua’s article, The Battle Hymn of the Tiger-Mother, and feel I have failed as a mum. (This, of course, is the uneasy reaction the sassy book was intended to evoke.) “Zoe and Irene,” I say dramatically. “I have failed as a tiger-mother.” Zoe snorts. “You never were a tiger-mother, Mum. Especially now. You […]

On Tiger Mothers, Distracted Mothers, and Just About Good Enough Mothers | Dreaming Beneath the Spires
Here’s Irene, her prize, and Grandmaster Aaron Summerscale So I flick through Amy Chua’s book, The Battle Hymn of the Tiger-Mother, and feel I have failed as a mum. Accept My Lot
In a previous article, I discussed the importance of accepting our toil as a gift. This came from Ecclesiastes 3:22: “...a man should rejoice in his work, for that is his lot.” In the passage, we can also observe the concept of accepting one’s lot. We see this also in a similar passage later on. “Find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. … To accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of Go
