The Pulpit Commentary - Hosea 10:5

The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear Because of the calves of Beth-aven. Samaria was the capital of Israel, the northern kingdom. Bethel means "house of God," once a place of sacred memory from its association with the history of the patriarch Jacob; afterward one of the two centers of idolatrous worship, and here called Beth-aven, "house of vanity," because of the idolatry. The word for "calves" is in the feminine, in order to express contempt for those idols which Jeroboam set up. With... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Hosea 10:6

It shall he also carried unto Assyria for a present to King Jareb . Here we have an explanation and confirmation of what has just been said in the preceding verse. The calf, the glorious and magnificent national god, as Israel considered it, is brought to Assyria, and there offered as a present to the Assyrian king. The word gam is emphatic; that is, "it also," "itself also," or "it also with men and other spoils"—the golden idol of Beth-aven. Kimchi's explanation of gam is as follows:... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Hosea 10:5

The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of - (i. e., for) the calves of Beth-aven He calls them in this place “cow-calves,” perhaps to denote their weakness and helplessness. So far from their idol being able to help “them, they” shall be anxious and troubled for their idols, lest these should be taken captive from them. The “Bethel (House of God)” of the patriarch Jacob, was now turned into “Bethaven, the house of vanity.” This, from its old sacred memories, was a more celebrated place... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Hosea 10:6

It shall be also carried - (that is, “Itself also shall be carried”). Not Israel only shall be carried into captivity, but its god also. The victory over a nation was accounted of old a victory over its gods, as indeed it showed their impotence. Hence, the excuse made by the captains of Benhadad, that the gods of “Israel were gods of the hills, and not gods of the valleys” 1Ki 20:23, 1 Kings 20:28, and God’s vindication of His own Almightiness, which was thus denied. Hence, also the boast of... read more

Hosea 10:5. The inhabitants of Samaria That is, the kingdom of Israel; shall fear “Be in a consternation.” Horsley. Because of the calves of Beth-aven The Jewish writers have a tradition, that the golden calf at Dan was taken away by Tiglath-pileser, when he subdued Galilee, 2 Kings 15:29; and the other at Beth-el, (here called Beth-aven: see note on chap. Hosea 4:15,) by order of Shalmaneser, of which probably this is a prophecy. For the people thereof shall mourn over it Hebrew, אבל... read more

Hosea 10:6-8. It The golden calf; shall be carried into Assyria It was the custom of the eastern people, and also of the Romans, to carry away the gods of the conquered countries. For a present to King Jareb See note on Hosea 5:13. The king of Assyria is meant, whose dependant and tributary the king of Israel now was. Ephraim shall receive shame They shall be ashamed to find that the idol in which they trusted could not defend them or itself from being disgraced and taken away. Bishop... read more

Click image for full-size versionReaping what they have sown (10:1-15)The more prosperous the people of Israel become, the more they increase their worship of Baal. The more certain, therefore, is their coming judgment (10:1-2). No one can be trusted. Injustice, like a poisonous plant, is having a deadly effect. It is killing the nation. The people do not fear God, and as a result will fall under his judgment. They, along with their king and the golden calf that they worship, will be carried... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Hosea 10:5

"The inhabitants of Samaria shall be in terror for the calves of Beth-aven; for the people thereof shall mourn over it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it.""The calves of Beth-aven ..." We reject as irresponsible the affirmation that the plural "calves" here is inaccurate, "because probably only one image was set up in each place,"[11] or that, "The plural was used here with indefinite generality."[12] In the first place, as Hailey pointed out, there were two of these calves,... read more
