The Pulpit Commentary - Matthew 26:1-5

God's plans and man's plots. The "sayings," "words," or discourses of Jesus here "finished," were begun on the Mount of Olives (see Matthew 24:1 ), and continued till he came to Bethany (see Matthew 26:6 ). They were spoken, it would seem, publicly, while the sentence following was privately spoken "unto his disciples" ( Matthew 26:2 ). The matter of this sentence is intrinsically intensely interesting, and it is interesting also from its relation to the consultation of the Sanhedrin... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Matthew 26:2

Ye know. He speaks of a fact well known to his hearers—the day of the Passover Feast. And they had been forewarned of his death (see Matthew 20:17-19 ). After two days; μετα Ì δυ ì ο ἡμε ì ρας : post biduum. These words are ambiguous, as it is not certain how the time is reckoned—whether the current day is included or not. If, as is most probable, they were spoken on Wednesday, the phrase means the next day but one, which commenced on the afternoon of Friday. Jesus... read more

After two days is - the feast of the Passover.See the notes at Matthew 12:1-8. The festival of the Passover was designed to preserve among the Jews the memory of their liberation from Egyptian servitude, and of the safety of their first-born in that night when the firstborn of the Egyptians perished, Exodus 12:0. The name “Passover” was given to the feast because the Lord “passed over” the houses of the Israelites without slaying their first-born, while the Egyptians were cut off, Exodus 12:13.... read more

For, as the greatest trial that... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Matthew 26:1-16

138. The plot to capture Jesus (Matthew 26:1-16; Mark 14:1-11; Luke 22:1-6)The Passover was only two days away, and Jesus knew its significance in relation to his coming death. Israelites kept the Feast of Passover and Unleavened Bread as an annual week-long festival in commemoration of ancient Israel’s deliverance from Egypt. God ‘passed over’ those houses where a lamb had been sacrificed in the place of those under judgment (Exodus 12:1-13). The people then escaped from bondage. For the next... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Matthew 26:2

Ye know that after two days the passover cometh, and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified.Christ related the crucifixion to the passover, rather than to the ordinary sabbath (see notes on Matthew 10:40). The passover always came at sundown on the 14th day of Nisan, which means that it came on a different day of the week each year. In this place Christ named the kind of execution he would receive: crucifixion. His use of the prophetic tense, "is delivered up," makes the present stand... read more

Matthew 26:1-2. When Jesus had finished, &c.— See Luke 21:37-38. When our Lord sat down on the mount of Olives to foretel the destruction of the city, and to deliver the parables which represent the method of the general judgment, he was far on his way to Bethany. After the parables were pronounced, and before he departed, he thought fit to add a word or two concerning his own death. The greatest trial which his disciples were ever to meet with was now approaching in their Master's... read more
