The Pulpit Commentary - Mark 15:21-32

The Crucifixion. I. THERE MAY BE A BLESSING IN ENFORCED SERVICE . Simon the Cyrenian is raised into the light of history; perhaps to teach us this. No nobler honor for the Christian than to reflect, "I have been called to bear the cross." And for some to reflect, "I was forced into carrying the cross I would have refused, or left on the ground." So with that other Simon, surnamed Peter. II. PAIN IS RATHER TO BE STRUGGLED WITH THAN ARTIFICIALLY ... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Mark 15:24

And they crucify him ( καὶ σταυροῦσιν αὐτὸν ,) . Such is the most approved reading. The evangelist states the fact without staying to dwell on the painful circumstances connected with the act of nailing him to the cross; and passes on to the mention of other things. They part his garments among them, casting lots upon them, what each should take . The outer robe and the tunic would have been removed previously to the crucifixion. St. John ( John 21:23 ) here goes into details.... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Mark 15:25

And it was the third hour, and they crucified him . The third hour would literally be nine o'clock. But we gather from Mark 15:33 that our Lord was on his cross, and still alive, at the sixth hour, that is, at twelve o'clock. The simplest mode of solving the chronological difficulty seems to be this: The Jews divided their day into four parts, which they called hours, namely, the first, from six to nine; the third, from nine to twelve; the sixth, from twelve to three; and the ninth, from... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Mark 15:25

And it was the third hour ... - In John 19:14 it is said, “And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour, etc. Much difficulty has been felt in reconciling these passages, and infidels have usually adduced them to prove that the evangelists have contradicted themselves. In reconciling them the following remarks may perhaps make the matter clear:(1) The Jews divided both the night and the day into four equal parts of three hours each. See the notes at Matthew 14:25. The... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Mark 15:22-28

Mark 15:22-28. They bring him, unto the place Golgotha See these verses elucidated in the notes on Matthew 27:33-44. When they had crucified him, they parted his garments Mark seems to intimate, that they first nailed him to the cross, then parted his garments, and afterward reared up the cross. The English word to crucify, denotes properly, to put to death by nailing to the cross; but the Greek word σταυροω , here used, means no more than to fasten to the cross with nails. In strict... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Mark 15:22-32

158. The crucifixion (Matthew 27:33-44; Mark 15:22-32; Luke 23:32-43; John 19:18-24)Golgotha, the place of Jesus’ crucifixion, was a hill beside a main road just outside Jerusalem. The procession arrived there about 9 a.m. (Matthew 27:33; Mark 15:25). (It is difficult to calculate the exact times of all the incidents that took place on the day of Jesus’ crucifixion. People in those days did not carry clocks, and the times given in the Gospels are only approximate. In some cases the writers may... read more

the third hour . Of the day (John 11:9 ), i.e. 9am. No discrepancy; for the sixth hour of John 19:14 was the sixth hour of the night (from about sunset), viz. "about" midnight (in the midst of the trial), when Pilate said "Behold your King". The context there and here explains and settles the matter. Here, the trial was over; in John 19:14 the trial was going on. See App-156 and App-165 . It was the hour of the morning sacrifice. read more

And they crucify him, and part his garments among them, casting lots upon them, what each should take. This was in fulfillment of the prophecy recorded in Psalms 22:18, and for a fuller discussion of this intriguing episode, see the comments of this author on the parallel account in John. John gave the most careful description of the clothes, even telling how they were made, the robe being woven in a particular manner without a seam. Also, for the callous indifference of the gamblers, see my... read more
