The Pulpit Commentary - Exodus 17:9-13

Diversities of gifts, but the same spirit. DIVERSITIES OF GIFTS . The needs of life are various, and the gifts which God imparts to his saints are correspondingly diversified. In Moses, at the age of eighty ( Exodus 7:7 ), the qualities required for the successful conduct of military matters were not present. It may be doubted whether he would at any period of his life have been a good general But his age, his temperament, and his training made him emphatically a man of prayer.... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Exodus 17:10

Hur . Hur has not been mentioned hitherto. According to one Jewish tradition, he was the son, according to another, the husband of Miriam. Scripture only tells us of him, that he was descended from Judah, through Caleb the son of Hezron ( 1 Chronicles 2:18-20 ), and that his grandson, Bezaleel, was the artificer of the tabernacle ( Exodus 31:2 ). He is again associated with Aaron in Exodus 24:14 . read more

Hur - Again mentioned with Aaron, in Exodus 24:14. He was grandfather of Bezaleel, the great sculptor and artificer of the tabernacle, Exodus 31:2-5, and belonged to the tribe of Judah. (See 1 Chronicles 2:18-20.) read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Exodus 17:10-11

Exodus 17:10-11. Hur A person of eminence, no doubt, but who he was is uncertain. Josephus, however, tells us, he was the husband of Miriam, Antiq., 50:3, chap. 2. And when Moses held up his hand in prayer (so the Chaldee explains it) Israel prevailed: but when he let down his hand from prayer Amalek prevailed To convince Israel that the hand of Moses (with whom they had just now been chiding) contributed more to their safety than their own hands; the success rises and falls, as... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Exodus 17:1-16

Events at Rephidim (17:1-16)When the people arrived at Rephidim and found no water, they again complained against God and against Moses. Once more Moses prayed for them and once more God miraculously provided. The names by which the place became known, Massah and Meribah, reminded the people of how they ‘tested’ God (Massah) and ‘argued with’ Moses (Meribah) (17:1-7).The Amalekites, a race of wild desert nomads descended from Esau (see Genesis 36:12,Genesis 36:16), saw the migration of the... read more

WAR WITH AMALEK"Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek; tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand. So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.""Amalek ..." Who were the Amalekites? Amalek was the son of Eliphaz and the grandson of Esau (Genesis 36:12,16). In this place, Amalek is used as a... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Exodus 17:10

Exodus 17:10. Hur— It is uncertain who this person was: he is thought by some to have been the same who is mentioned, 1 Chronicles 2:19 : Josephus tells us, that he was the husband of Miriam. See Antiquities, book 3: ch. 2. To account for this event in an ordinary way, appears very difficult. We must understand it as a blessing upon prayer, and as an admonition to perseverance in it; see Luk 18:1 otherwise, that the holding up of the hand, or the ceasing to do so, should influence the battle,... read more

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - Exodus 17:10

10-12. Moses . . . went up . . . the hill . . . held up his hand—with the wonder-working rod; Moses acted as the standard bearer of Israel, and also their intercessor, praying for success and victory to crown their arms—the earnestness of his feelings being conspicuously evinced amid the feebleness of nature. read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Exodus 17:8-13

Moses used "Amalek" to represent the Amalekites, as he often used "Israel" for the Israelites (Exodus 17:8). The Amalekites were a tribe of Semites. They had descended from one of Esau’s grandsons (Genesis 36:12) and had settled in the part of Sinai the Israelites now occupied. They also inhabited an area in southern Canaan (cf. Genesis 14:7). They evidently opposed Israel in battle because they felt Israel was a threat to their security. This is the first biblical reference to Joshua (Exodus... read more
