Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Zechariah 6:14-15

Zechariah 6:14-15. And the crowns The two crowns before mentioned, made of the gold and silver brought from Babylon, Zechariah 6:11; shall be to Helem and to Tobijah, &c. Of these persons we know no more, with any certainty, than their names. For a memorial in the temple of the Lord Namely, of this transaction, of the pious liberality of those men, who had presented the gold and silver of which they were made, and especially of the Messiah’s certain and speedy coming. And they... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Zechariah 6:9-15

The crowning of Joshua (6:9-15)Just as the setting up of the Messiah’s kingdom will be marked by the crowning of the Messiah as universal king, so the re-establishment of the nation Israel was marked by the crowning of Joshua. The crown was made from gold and silver brought from Babylon by some exiles who had recently arrived in Jerusalem (9-11).A coronation of the high priest was unusual, but because the restored nation of Israel was still under Persian rule, a coronation of the Davidic prince... read more

"And the crowns shall be to Helem, and to Tobijah, and to Jedaiah, and to Hen the son of Zephaniah, for a memorial in the temple of Jehovah."We are surprised here by the names apparently being changed from those mentioned in Zechariah 6:9; but we refuse to find any problem here. Any of those mentioned could have borne two or more names; and as Baldwin suggested, "It may be that Heldai preferred to use his more dignified name for official purposes; or the names could have been... read more

Zechariah 6:14. And the crowns shall be to Helem— And the crowns shall be for the family of Heldai, namely, to Tobijah, &c. Houbigant. See 1Ma 1:23; 1Ma 4:57. Though the last verse may refer literally to the Jews, and other artificers flowing in from all parts to build the temple; yet it has had, and will have, its more ample completion in the conversion of the world to Christ, that true temple of the living God. See Isa 60:10 and John 2:19. REFLECTIONS.—1st, The vision of this chapter is... read more

14. the crowns shall be to Helem . . . a memorial—deposited in the temple, to the honor of the donors; a memorial, too, of the coronation of Joshua, to remind all of Messiah, the promised antitypical king-priest, soon to come. Helem, the same as Heldai Zechariah 6:10. So Hen (that is, "favor") is another name for Josiah (that is, "God founds") above. The same person often had two names. read more

III. THE SYMBOLIC CROWNING OF Joshua 6:9-15The visions ended and Zechariah awoke from his dream-like state. What follows is a symbolic act that took place in Jerusalem at the Lord’s command."The position of this actual ceremony after the eight visions is significant. The fourth and fifth visions, at the center of the series, were concerned with the high priest [Joshua] and the civil governor in the Davidic line [Zerubbabel]. Zechariah here linked the message of those two visions to the... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Zechariah 6:14

The ceremonial crown that Zechariah made for Joshua was to remain in the restoration temple as a reminder to Helem (strength; or Heldai, mole, Zechariah 6:10), Tobijah, Jedaiah, and Hen (Josiah) the son of Zephaniah. It would doubtless remind other Israelites as well, but they were the prominent men during this event. "Hen" means "gracious one" in Hebrew, and it was likely an honorary title for Josiah who had been the host of this historic coronation (Zechariah 6:10). read more

The Eighth Vision. The Symbolic Crowning1-8. Four war-chariots, with variously coloured horses, go forth to execute God’s judgments against the enemies of oppressed Israel in different parts of the earth. Two, in particular, go. northwards, to ’quiet His spirit’ (i.e. to satisfy His anger) upon Babylon. 9-15. Zechariah is commanded to take gold and silver from the Temple offerings, and make a crown for Joshua the high priest. At the same time, the Messiah (’Branch’) is again promised. Under Him... read more

A SERIES OF SEVEN VISIONS.Zechariah 1:7 to Zechariah 6:15. Between the commencement of Zechariah’s prophetic labours and the incidents recorded in Zechariah 1:7 to Zechariah 6:15, the Prophet Haggai received the revelation contained in Haggai 2:10-23. On the four-and-twentieth day of the eleventh month, just five months after the re-building of the Temple was resumed, Zechariah sees a succession of seven visions in one night, followed by a symbolic action (Zechariah 6:9-15). read more
