Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - Proverbs 4:3

My father’s son, in a special manner; his best beloved son, and designed to be his successor in the throne. Tender; young and tender in years, and capable of any impressions, and tenderly educated. Only beloved, Heb. only, or the only son; or rather, because Bathsheba seems to have had other sons, 1 Chronicles 3:5, as an only son, as dearly beloved as an only son; in which sense this title is given to Isaac, Genesis 22:2,Genesis 22:12,Genesis 22:16, though he had another son, and to others. And... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Proverbs 4:1-4

CRITICAL NOTES.—Proverbs 4:2. Doctrine, Literally something received, handed over; the author so describes it because he received it from his father. The Septuagint and the Vulgate translate by donum, “a gift.” Proverbs 4:3. Tender and only, “dearly-beloved”—not that Solomon was Bathsheba’s only son (1 Chronicles 3:5). Proverbs 4:4. Get, Heb. “acquire or buy”—spare no cost. The repetition of the verb makes the injunction more imperative. Forget is a word in Hebrew that takes the preposition... read more

Sutcliffe's Commentary on the Old and New Testaments - Proverbs 4:1-27

Proverbs 4:1 . Hear, ye children, a Hebraism, equivalent to wash, cleanse, and purify your ears. A grateful son here recites the domestic piety of an illustrious father. David talked much with his children on religious subjects. But Solomon, wiser than all his brothers, was his beloved son, and shared more of his father’s favours. David made religion the first object of paternal tuition; for it was in his eyes far before the throne, and all worldly good. Our Lord also has taught us that it... read more

Proverbs 4:3-4For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. The religious education of SolomonSolomon in these words gives us two pieces of his own private history, in order to account for the zeal he shows in this book for the welfare of the rising generation. The first is, that in early life he had a large share in the affections of his parents; and the second, that he received the first rudiments of that wisdom, for which he became afterwards so eminent, from... read more

Pro 4:3 For I was my father’s son, tender and only [beloved] in the sight of my mother. Ver. 3. For I was my father’s son,] q.d., I that am now so famous for wisdom, was once as wise as a wild ass’s colt. But I had the happiness to be taught and tutored by the best and wisest man in his generation, and therefore you should the rather regard my doctrine. Plato praised God that he was pupil to Socrates, Bucholcerus that he was bred under Melanchthon, Mr Whately under Mr Dod’s ministry, and I... read more

Whedon's Commentary on the Bible - Proverbs 4:3

3. Tender רךְ , rakh, means delicate, soft, gentle. (Compare 1 Chronicles 29:1.) It is, probably to be referred to the gentle and tender care of the mother. Only beloved Literally, the only one in the sight of my mother; that is, my father recognised me with warm affection as his son, and when in my mother’s presence she could see no one else, alluding to that partiality with which a fond mother’s eye rests upon, and her heart follows, a beloved child. The word יחיד ( only) is... read more
