Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary - Genesis 36:9-19

Observe here, 1. That only the names of Esau's sons and grandsons are recorded, only their names, not their history; for it is the church that Moses preserves the records of, not the record of those that are without. Those elders that lived by faith alone obtained a good report. It is Sion that produces the men of renown, not Seir, Ps. 87:5. Nor does the genealogy go any further than the third and fourth generation; the very names of all after are buried in oblivion. It is only the pedigree of... read more

John Gills Exposition of the Bible Commentary - Genesis 36:16

Duke Korah ,.... Only among the sons of Eliphaz is reckoned Duke Korah, not before mentioned among his sons, and is left out in the Samaritan version; See Gill on Genesis 36:7 ; to which it may be added, that according to Gerundinsis F1 Apud Menaasseh ut supra. (conciliator in Gen. Quaest. 57. p. 81.) , this is the same with Timna, related among the sons of Eliphaz, 1 Chronicles 1:36 ; who was called by his father Korah: or this might be a grandson of Eliphaz. read more

Adam Clarke

Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible - Genesis 36:16

Duke Korah - This Dr. Kennicott pronounces to be an interpolation. "It is certain, from Genesis 36:4 , that Eliphaz was Esau's son by Adah; and from Genesis 36:11 , Genesis 36:12 , that Eliphaz had but six sons, Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, Kenaz, and Amalek. It is also certain, from Genesis 36:5 , Genesis 36:14 , that Korah was the son of Esau (not of Eliphaz) by Aholibamah; and as such he is properly mentioned in Genesis 36:18 ; : These are the sons of Aholibamah, Esau's wife:... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Genesis 36:15-16

These were dukes of the sons of Esau . The אַלּוּפים , derived probably from אָלַף , to be familiar, whence to join together, or associate, were Edomite and Horite phylarchs or tribe-leaders, ἡγεμόνες, ( LXX .), chieftains of a thousand men (Gerlach). At a later period the term came to be applied to the Jewish chiefs or governors of the Restoration ( Zechariah 9:7 ; Zechariah 12:5 ). The sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau; duke Teman, duke Omar, duke Zepho, duke Kemaz ... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Genesis 36:1-43

Descendants of Esau (36:1-43)The story is now about to move on from Jacob to his family, but first the record of Esau is brought to a close. The covenant family (Jacob’s) had settled in Canaan, while the non-covenant family (Esau’s) had settled in Edom. There, over many years, Esau’s descendants grew into a large nation (36:1-19; cf. 27:39-40). As the Edomites grew, the original inhabitants of the land, the Horites, were either forced to move elsewhere or absorbed into Edom (20-30; cf. 14:6;... read more

"These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the first-born of Esau: chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz, chief Gatam, chief Amalek: these are the chiefs that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Adah. And these are the sons of Reuel, Esau's son: chief Nahath, chief Zerah, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah: these are the chiefs that came of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Basemath, Esau's wife. John Dummelow

John Dummelow's Commentary on the Bible - Genesis 36:1-43

The Generations of Esau’The amount of detail here arises from the fact that Edom was always counted Israel’s brother, and of great importance in the history of Israel. The Horites (“cave-dwellers ") were originally in the mountainous country of Seir (Genesis 36:20); the Hebrews under Esau entered and amalgamated with them. Esau married the Horite Aholibamah, and his son Eliphaz, the Horite Timna. They then became rulers of Seir to Akaba; God gave it them as Canaan to Israel ’(D.). See... read more
