Je n'ai pas l'intention de rappeler ici ce que le bienheureux Augustin raconte de lui m�me dans ses Confessions, ce qu'il a �t� avant de recevoir la gr�ce, et ce qu'il fut apr�s l'avoir re�ue. Il �crivit ce livre afin que, selon la parole de l'ap�tre, personne ne le cr�t ou ne l'estim�t au - dessus de ce qu'il savait �tre lui-m�me, ou de ce qu'on avait entendu dire de lui, (il Cor., xu, 6) suivant la r�gle de la sainte humilit�, ne voulant tromper personne et cherchant, au contraire dans le bienfait de sa propre d�livrance et dans les gr�ces qu'il avait d�j� re�ues, la gloire du Seigneur non la sienne, et deman dant les pri�res de ses fr�res pour les gr�ces qu'il d�sirait encore obtenir. Aurelius Augustinus - more commonly "St. Augustine of Hippo," or simply "Augustine" - was a philosopher and theologian, and one of the most important figures in the development of Western Christianity. He framed the concepts of original sin and just war. Augustine was one of the most prolific Latin authors in terms of surviving works, and the list of his works consists of more than a hundred separate titles.
Augustine took the view that the Biblical text should not be interpreted literally if it contradicts what we know from science and our God-given reason. Many Protestants, especially Calvinists, consider him to be one of the theological fathers of Reformation teaching on salvation and divine grace.
