“We Are God’s Provision,” 2 Corinthians 8:3-5 
 
You’ve heard it numerous times, and I can assure you that to the extent God allows you to be part of City of Refuge Fellowship (CORF), you will continue to hear the following statement, that as the church of Christ we have a calling to devote ourselves to these three things outlined in Acts 2:42: 
 1. God’s Word or the apostles’ teaching 
 2. God’s people or fellowship 
 3. God’s presence or prayer 
 
This devotion does not happen in a vacuum or in isolation. It is always within the context of the church as the community of believers who make up the body of Christ that we get to live out this calling. 
 
God is working in us. This truth is actually more beneficial to us than simply having God work through us or for us. Through the knowledge of him who called us, God is at work to transform and bring us into conformity to the image of his beloved Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 
 
One question we’ve been asking ourselves since the beginning of the year is, how can we transition and move from “I, me and mine” to “we, us and ours”? For months now we’ve been answering this question in the most practical ways possible in our series “WE.” Challenges have been made, encouragement provided for us to turn toward each other to connect, to build relationships, to walk together, to pray for each other. 
 
This week’s sermon from our very own David Mengi is no different. Our prayer is that by the end of this service we all come to a point of understanding that we, the church, are in fact God’s provision that we often underestimate.

We continue our series “We” with a focus on the why and not the how of the communion. We are not going to eat together tonight because it is important that we learn more, that we listen more, that we grab hold of more before we start trying to do. This is not a technical teaching on the passover or the Lord’s Supper. We are not going to get into the depth of them being the same meal, not one replacing the other or what Jesus even meant when he said through Paul, “As often as you drink it.” So be patient. We are going to get to those things, but we are just not going to get to them tonight. The question is why do we eat and drink. Why do we do this thing that has become a habit and an ordinance. “A Helper in Uncertainty,” John 15:26-27 
Today is Palm Sunday, the day that we traditionally celebrate Jesus’ initial entrance into Jerusalem one week before his resurrection and just a few days before his arrest and crucifixion. We call that ride the triumphant entry. John’s gospel spends so much time on the night of Jesus’s arrest. Chapters 13 through 17 that many of us might have forgotten that we study the triumphant entry almost a year ago, and John 12:12-22, Jesus has raised Lazarus from the dead in the town of Bethany which caused the religious leaders to begin seriously plotting to kill Jesus at their first opportunity. Jesus being led by the Holy Spirit and doing only what he saw the Father doing, no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness. So basically, Jesus hid. Just as David has done, and just as Elijah had done, Jesus was led by his Father to use caution and to hide from his enemies until it was time for God’s will to be accomplished in his life. If I can reiterate one of the things we’ve been talking about over these past few weeks, caution is not the same as fear. And removing ourselves from dangerous or potentially dangerous situations is wise. Not anxious. We are living in a time when we must obey our leaders, control ourselves, listen to the Spirit and be faithful to the word and the character of God. Uncertainty has the opportunity to create change because it requires that we listen more closely than ever before. Uncertainty requires that we not do what comes naturally, that we not do what we desire or what our instincts say to do, but as we slow ourselves down and we get direction before we ever stop moving. When something is shaken, it is not to see what would fall off, but to show what will stand. I believe it is important that we stop being afraid of what we don’t know and learn to be confident that we will be given everything that we need.

“The Truth for All Our Questions,” John 15:22-25 
I am not sure that there is a question we ask more often than “why?”. We find it important to know the reasoning behind an action. We question the motives of those we know and those we don’t know, of those we trust and those we don’t trust. This need to know, this need to understand, it does not end with the actions of those around us. We want to know why things happen, and we want to know why other things don’t happen. We want to know why does God seem to answer some prayers and he does not answer other prayers. Why is this happening? Why is that happening? Why is this person in charge? Why is this going on around us? I am not sure if we’re born with this need to know, but I do know that it develops quickly. If you’re a parent, you’ve had a child that responded to every direction you gave them with the question, “why?” It’s something we grow into, and we hope it’s something we grow out of, but generally it is something that most of us keep on some level in our lives. Most of us are quick to ask the question of others, but don’t enjoy when the question is get to ask of us. We want to be trusted, believed and followed, but we think that others should prove that they are trust worthy and believable before we follow them. And so we are quick to question the motives and actions of others, but we’re even quicker to defend ourselves when we feel our motives and actions are getting questioned. With all of that in mind, let me ask this today, is there any one that gets questioned more than God?
