T. Austin-Sparks

T. Austin Sparks (1888 – 1971)

He was ordained as a Baptist pastor at the age of 24, and from 1912 to 1926 led three congregations in Greater London. During these years, he was also closely related to Jessie Penn-Lewis and her publication and speaking ministry, the "Overcomer Testimony."

Among the many books that he wrote, at least three are regarded as Christian classics: The School of Christ, The Centrality and Supremacy of the Lord Jesus Christ and We Beheld His Glory. The primary theme of Sparks' books is the exaltation of the Lord Jesus Christ. He mentored Watchman Nee for many years and was very influential in his understanding of the Church Life.

More of Christ: From "The Stewardship of the Mystery" by T. Austin Sparks

"Mr Sparks", as he was affectionately known, was born in London, England in 1888. He came to know Christ as a teenager and later became a Baptist pastor. However, his "ecclesiastical" career took a decidedly different direction when a physical crisis brought him to a place of brokenness.

At the same time God also delivered him from his previous prejudice against anything that was related to the "deeper life". As a result, he joined Jessie Penn-Lewis in the ministry of the spiritual growth of believers; a ministry to which he devoted his life and which also cost him his reputation and his career in the denominational circles of England.

He was based in southeast London at Honor Oak Christian Fellowship which is where Watchman Nee met and fellowshipped with him during a visit to England in 1933. Nee's refusal to disavow Austin-Sparks later became the grounds for him being disfellowshipped by the Taylor Brethren. It has been said that Watchman Nee considered Austin-Sparks as his spiritual mentor, and their fellowship appears to have been rich and fruitful.

Golden Snuffers

Reading: Exodus 37:17-24. "And he made the lamps thereof, seven, and the snuffers thereof, and the snuff-dishes thereof, of pure gold." We have here the great vessel of light and testimony in the candlestick, which quite clearly is Christ in corporate expression, but Christ pre-eminently; and we hav... Read More

Government by the Holy Spirit

We are considering the deeper and fuller meaning of what came in on the day of Pentecost, the nature and order of an entirely new day in this world's history, that nature and order being essentially spiritual. A new order and character introduced by the advent of the Holy Spirit to constitute everyt... Read More

Harmony

To those who have a knowledge of the Bible it is evident that the whole of the Scriptures open up along the four lines that we have indicated; namely that 1. God is a God of order; 2. Satan is the prince of a world under divine judgment, and the nature of that judgment is confusion; 3. Christ, in Pe... Read More

Has it Come From Heaven by the Spirit of God?

There may by one or two who have joined us this morning who have not been with us on these other mornings this week. For their sake and for the sake of all of us, may I just repeat what it is that is occupying us at this time. We are all aware that during the centuries, Christianity has become a tre... Read More

HAVE We FETTERED & IMPRISONED

From the latter days of the Apostles till now, the history of Christianity is a history of prisons. This history is not of literal or material prisons, though there have been not a few of these. It is a history of prisons, which are the result of man's long established habit of bringing the Spirit i... Read More

He Must Reign

"He must reign, till He hath put all His enemies under His feet" (I Corinthians 15:25). In these past messages our eyes have been turned to that Throne that was seen by Ezekiel through the open heaven, with the 'appearance as of a Man upon it above'. And we have seen, I trust, how everything that fo... Read More

Hindrances to Fullness of Life

While it is true that every spiritual blessing is a gift of grace and not something to be merited, it is equally true that no blessing is entered into without a real challenge, demanding a genuine and honest proof that we mean business with God. His Excellent Greatness

Reading: 1 Kings 4:1,7,20–34, 10:1–9; Matt. 12:42. Some of the passages which have provided the background for our meditations have referred very definitely and precisely to the excellence and exceeding greatness of the Lord Jesus. One basic passage of tremendous implication is that which came from ... Read More

His Fullness Is Linked to the Church

Next to the revelation of Christ personally in His greatness, the revelation of the Church is bound up with our practical progress toward fullness. Paul has a far greater fullness in his writings than any other Apostle, and this is mainly due to the specific revelation of the Church which was given ... Read More

Horizoned by Glory

Having defined and explained what glory is, it becomes necessary and imperative to take notice of how serious and solemn the glory is. God is "the God of Glory"; therefore, to meet the glory, or to be where the glory is, is a very serious matter. It can - as the Bible shows - work both ways. It can ... Read More
