David Wilkerson is an American Christian evangelist, most well-known for his book The Cross and the Switchblade. He is also the founder of Times Square Church in New York, an interdenominational church.

Wilkerson is well-known for these early years of his ministry to young drug addicts and gang members in New York City in the 1950s and 1960s. He co-authored a book about his work with the New York drug addicts, The Cross and the Switchblade, which became a best-seller, selling over 50 million copies in over thirty languages since it was published in 1963. The book was included among the 100 most important Christian books of the 20th century.

For over four decades, Wilkerson's ministry has included preaching, teaching and writing. He has authored over 30 books.

David Wilkerson is the founder and president of World Challenge, Inc., a nonprofit organization incorporated on September 22, 1971. Reverend Wilkerson, the author of over thirty inspirational books, is perhaps best known for his early days of ministry to young drug addicts and gang members in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. His story is told in The Cross and the Switchblade, a book he co-authored which became a best-seller. (The story has been read by over 50 million people in some thirty languages and 150 countries since 1963. In 1969, a motion picture of the same title was released.)

For over four decades, Reverend Wilkerson's evangelistic ministry has included preaching, teaching and writing. Throughout that time a distinctive characteristic of his work has been his direct efforts to reach the neediest members of the population with help for both body and soul. Even now, the almost 70 year-old minister often goes out alone or sometimes with an assistant to walk through the streets of New York City, along Broadway and Eighth Avenue or down 42nd Street and nearby "Crack Alley" on 41st Street. His mission is always to seek out the lost, the disoriented, and the addicted , to tell them of the power of the risen Christ to set them free.

David Wilkerson, born in Hammond, Indiana on May 19, 1931, was married in 1953 to Gwen Carosso. The Wilkersons' two sons are ministers, and their two daughters are married to ministers. They have 11 grandchildren. The Wilkersons served small pastorates in Scottsdale and Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, until Reverend Wilkerson saw a photograph in Life magazine of several New York City teenagers charged with murder. Moved with compassion he was drawn to the city in February 1959. It was at that time he began his street ministry to what one writer called "desperate, bewildered, addicted, often violent youth.

A FOUNTAIN OF LIFE

I have seen men mightily used of the Spirit who were later put on the shelf by God. The Lord told them, “I’m sorry, son—I love you, I forgive you, and my mercy will come through for you. But I can’t use you.” To me, this is one of the most dreadful things that could ever happen. Yet it happened to S... Read More

A GLIMPSE INTO THE HEART OF JESUS

“But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say to him…when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? And will not rather say to him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drin... Read More

A Glorious Christmas Reminder!

The manger in Bethlehem speaks directly to the resurrection of Christ! He was fully human at birth — Mary’s blood nourished him in the womb — but his birth was a breaking forth of the eternal. We read: “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and ... Read More

A God Who Restores Wasted Years

“So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten” (Joel 2:25). Did you waste years before you repented and surrendered all to Jesus? You may think, “I could have been so much deeper in Christ. I could have brought so much joy to his heart. I can never make up all those wasted y... Read More

A GREAT AWAKENING

What do I mean by a great awakening? I’m talking about what Paul describes as a revelation and enlightenment: “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; ... A HEALING WORD FROM HEAVEN

Jesus was drawn to an impotent man lying by the pool of Bethesda. "And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?" (John 5:5-6). This unnamed cripp... Read More

A Heart Capable of Unbelief

When the children of Israel were delivered from Egypt and they crossed over the Red Sea, their faith was at an all-time high. They sang, danced and shouted the praises of God for revealing his mighty arm of deliverance. “The Lord is my strength and song … your right hand, O Lord, has become glorious... Read More

A HEART TO KNOW HIM

God has sworn by an oath to give us a new heart—one that is inclined to obey. “I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the Lord: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart” (Jeremiah 24:7). “A new heart also will I give you, and... A Highway Out of Egypt!

Isaiah 19 contains an astounding prophecy that concerns every lost child of God and every backslider in the world. This chapter contains a dual prophecy, directed both to literal Israel and to spiritual Judah - the church of today. Moffatt's translation brings it out in its most powerful form. It is... Read More

A Lesson from the Fig Tree

In the last days of his ministry, Jesus was spending time with his disciples, preparing them to become the pillars of his future church. They were still “slow to believe,” men of little faith, and Jesus had chided them for their unbelief at times. He saw that there was a hindrance in their hearts th... Read More

A LESSON ON LISTENING

God had to teach Elijah a lesson on listening so he took him to the top of Mr. Horeb and gave him an illustrated sermon. “And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks be... Read More

A LIFE OF COMMUNION

Multitudes of God’s offspring know little or nothing of a life of communion with him. Why is this so? I believe such Christians have a sad, twisted concept of the heavenly Father. I recall Jesus’ parable about the servant who hid his talent because he had a twisted image of his master. That servant ... Read More

A Life of Godliness and Gratitude

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-17). God’s children should make it a matter of conscience to rejoice in him at all times and in every circumstance. Rejoicing is not our choice; it is God’s command! If we treat these words as an option, we undermine God’s imperative to us... Read More

A Life that Satan Cannot Destroy!

As Jesus lay silent in the grave after his crucifixion, Satan and his hordes gloated. A LIGHT NOT MEANT TO BE HIDDEN

Jesus tells us, “Ye are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). His statement here is about much more than just doing ministry. It extends beyond teaching, preaching or passing out tracts. A LITTLE TASTE OF HEAVEN

A foretaste is an advance taste or realization. The Bible calls it an earnest—“the earnest of our inheritance” (Ephesians 1:14). It means to bring a taste of the whole before we have the whole. Our inheritance is Christ himself—and the Holy Spirit brings us into his very presence as a foretaste of b... Read More

A Message for Christians Who Have Bad Days!

The Christian life is not a life of clear sailing. Every believer is going to have bad days, no matter how holy he may be.
