Tom Macartney ( - )

Tom Macartney was born in China and committed his life to the Lord as a teenager at an English Boarding School. As a family man living in London, he served the Lord in the teaching profession. He was a faithful man of God for whom Christ was his life. He was a student of the Bible. He had a gift for expressing profound truth in simple terms both in the spoken and written word.

Along with his own illustrations and charts, he frequently used the allegorical stories of John Bunyan and the writings of A.W. Tozer, as well as picture slide presentations to aid understanding. As an evangelist he longed for people, including children, to become true disciples of Jesus. As a pastor/teacher he sought to help people grow in their faith, grounded in the truth.

Standing up under pressure

Many people today are finding themselves under growing stress and pressure as the rising tide of lawlessness engulfs the world (2 Thess. 2). That no Christian need break-down under pressure is clear, because the Lord has provided grace sufficient to see us through; “My grace is sufficient for you,” ... Read More

Stephen Your witness

All that we know of Stephen is found in two chapters, and two more verses, in the book of the Acts, and yet he was among the most important of the Lord’s servants in the Bible. In many ways he is the Lord’s key witness in Acts, and the key to the book itself with its brief outline of the expansion o... Read More

Stormy wind fulfilling His word

Acts 27 must be one of the most encouraging chapters in the Bible – read it again! It is good for a Christian’s morale, telling as it does the triumphant outcome of Paul’s perilous journey to Rome as a prisoner, through storm and shipwreck. Now the Holy Spirit would hardly guide Luke to use precious... Read More

The dew of resurrection

As Christians we live in a spiritual desert, in a world without that living water which alone can satisfy the thirsty heart of man. It is sad to see the many ways in which our race of rebels seeks in vain to satisfy this thirst. It is our privilege, if we belong to the Lord, not only to drink of the... Read More

The eyes of Christ

One day we shall all see the Lord face to face. For those who have lived without Him this will be a day of overwhelming tragedy; for the half-hearted, lukewarm Christian, a day of profound regret and loss; but for those who have yielded fully to the claims of divine love, a day of unspeakable joy an... The finger of God

We live in a lost world and a world that has lost its way as if the moral and spiritual signposts have been altered by someone and so point in the wrong directions. Universal confusion reigns as chaos takes over. It seems today that the deceiver of the whole world is taking over in a new way (Rev. 1... Read More

The God of hope

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13). What a wonderfully encouraging verse! What an antidote to depression! What a wonderful God we have: In verse 5 of this same chapter, He is cal... Read More

The whole truth is in the whole church

If we believed this, it would have a far-reaching effect on our thinking and actions. It would cripple our archenemy, spiritual pride. It would stop us paying mere lip-service to the truth of the unity of all believers. Do we realise how much we are losing because of our confused and divided state a... Read More

The wind of God and the sails of faith

In the New Testament there are many pictures illustrating the Christian life, each of which contributes something to our understanding of it. We have the athlete in the games, the soldier on active service, the builder concerned to build on a firm foundation with good materials; the farmer working f... Read More

Unity

Church unity is a favourite talking point today but unhappily much of the talk by-passes the fact that only those united to Christ in saving experience can possibly be one. The new birth is crucial. Born-again believers alone can be one. They are already members of the same family and only need to h... Read More

Watch

While we are familiar with the words, “Watch and pray”. There is a great deal more in the scriptures than we realise about watchfulness, an issue of particular importance in these days. The word watch includes the ideas of vigilance, wakefulness, keeping and being awake and alert spiritually, and is... Read More

Where are you going?

“Go in through the narrow gate, far the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to hell, and there are many who travel it. The gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and few people find it.” The whole Bible echoes these words of Jesus Christ that there are only two roads by whic... Read More
