A popular hymn describes grace as “amazing.” Why is that? If we take the literal meaning, the word grace means divine favor. When something is given by grace, it means the recipient did not do anything to deserve it, yet it was given.

Even the first mention of the word grace shows its meaning. In Genesis 6, Noah did not work for grace nor did he earn it. He “found” it because God gave it to him.

This is the whole idea that the Bible teaches about grace. Man cannot earn his way to heaven, because the free gift of salvation is given by grace. A person who wants to receive that gift should believe by faith that he would receive it from God’s only begotten Son, Jesus.
