How can we build good ethics? 
That’s just a fancy way of saying, how can we know what is right? 
 
It is really important to have a strong sense of ethics, because there are so many opinions out there on what is right. If our sense of ethics is off, we could really do some damage with our actions, or we can even be crushed by unnecessary guilt. Or even worse, we can become self-righteous and think we’re better than everyone else. Our moral compass makes such a difference. But ethics is not just a black and white thing. We’ll see that in our Bible story today.

Strange Stories from The Bible - Judges 11:30-31

Our interactions with people are really important. It doesn’t just keep us from being lonely but talking, listening and communicating in general is a huge source of gaining information and truths. We’re in a really weird place and time with information and truth. We’re in a climate where everybody has their own truths and they’re supposed to be all equal. For example, if I thought the Earth was flat, you’re not allowed to offend my beliefs. Or, we’re in a time where truth is distorted and there are terms like “gaslighting” where people make others question their belief system and worldview. We’re in a time where we can completely ignore and CANCEL their career because of some dirt we found on them 20 years ago. 
 
What do we do with this? Do we follow people blindly? Do we gaslight others? Do we cancel people? No. We should do what is most beneficial for us and God’s Kingdom. And that is to learn and gain wisdom from our interaction with others. Wisdom is rare, but Jesus in our passage today gives us the tools to gain wisdom from any interaction you have. 
 
So our focus question today is, 
 
HOW CAN WE GAIN WISDOM FROM OTHERS? 
 
And our answer to that is that we gain wisdom from others by learning from their: 
 
1. Truths 
 
2. Mistakes 
 
Today, we are starting a new sermon series, and it’s called Taking out the Trash. Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at Jesus confronting the religious leaders of his day and as it turns out, there’s a lot of wisdom to be found during this interaction. So we’re going to try our best to learn from Jesus’ words as hard as they are to hear, so that we can be effective in our lives and our God-given mission.

Today I want to talk about the story of Joseph. Joseph was one of twelve brothers but he was the favorite son of his Father, Jacob. This caused an intense sibling rivalry- so intense that the brothers wanted to kill Joseph.

So my big question today is: What is the best way to approach our work? Our answer from our Bible story is: 
 
1. We should work with EFFORT 
2. We should work with INTEGRITY

We live in a secular culture where a lot of people view the world in terms of just atoms, energy and what they can see. Many atheists make arguments and assumptions that all this spiritual stuff isn’t real. 
 
There are many agnostics who say that there's not enough evidence to believe in a god or an afterlife, so we can’t really know. Therefore, truly the “enlightened” wouldn’t believe in God or an afterlife; this is all there is. 
 
I know it can feel intimidating talking to someone about faith at work or like at school and talking with intellectuals. But the Bible encourages us not to be afraid, to not avoid people with atheist/agnostic worldviews. 
 
Instead, we should create genuine friendships with atheists and agnostics. We should be ready to explain the reason for the hope that we have in Jesus. Our Bible passage today makes us think about what many atheists and agnostics have proposed today in our culture.
