Three basic cries of every toddler are "No!", "Mine!" and "That's not fair!" and each one of these sticks with us even when we grow up. The hopeful answer to each is actually found in the gospel, because we wouldn't cry out like this if the answers weren't available of "Yes!" or "Ours!" or "Thank God he's more than fair." God's mercy is greater and we can see that in how He is patient with Israel.

Romans 9:14-10:21 || Lesson 9/Day 1

Faithful & Fearless: Lesson 6/Day 8, Esther 9:20-32 
Ultimately, God has promised that “joy comes in the morning” and not just for a day, but forever when “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Rev. 21:4) So, the joyful reversals and thrilling relief in the turnings of Esther are just a foretaste of the greatest joy, the final relief, and the culmination of all turnings when every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord! What a day! What a glorious day to anticipate. While we wait and long for that day we “sing the praises of the Lord and praise his holy name!”

How many times is the name of God mentioned in Esther? Zero. How many times is prayer mentioned? Zero. What about the Temple? Again, zero. How many times has God’s will been stopped? Ah, yes...once again, zero times. No matter who is on the throne; no matter who is scheming; no matter the time we have to wait or the length of our efforts to do the right thing or the efforts of those to do evil, God will have his way. Consider that truth today. Do you feel God is silent? Does he seem to be far off? Like the pagan god Baal, who Elijah mocked as being off on the toilet, does God feel like he’s got a “Do Not Disturb” sign out on his royal doorknob? Rest assured, and actually, do just that – rest. And while you rest, be assured that God is on the throne getting the job done for your best and for His glory today! Amen? Amen!

Mordecai’s humility and patience have not only been rewarded, they’ve been rewarded publicly. Had Mordecai received recognition immediately it would have changed everything. Consider that moment you’ve been waiting for. Think about the recognition you’ve been wanting. Are you just? Are you seeking the honor of God? If so, be patient. Just like God’s timing is perfect in delivering you from the trial, so is his timing perfect in blessing your faithfulness. Remember, “God’s delays are not God’s denials.” Trust his timing in every aspect of your life, “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” (Ps 27)

Faithful & Fearless: Lesson 5/Day 7 Esther 6:1-5

Faithful & Fearless: Lesson 4/Day 9 Esther 3:7-15 
While Haman and Ahasuerus are drinking it up, God’s people – actually all of Susa – are in confusion. Terror and fear are spreading across all of Persia. This evil edict schedules the genocide of the Jews and is being carried from province to province. Haman isn’t the first to make plans against God’s people. 
The situation may look terribly hopeless, but God is making a way. 
All through history men have plotted to kill the Jews. What’s interesting, is that while racism exists between all ethnicities and that racism may well show up in evil and destructive ways, annihilation is the repeated plot of evil people through time against the Jews – not just enslaving, or persecuting, or killing off – but total annihilation. Haman is just one tool in a long line that Satan has used since the beginning to cut off God’s people. Hitler didn’t just want to kill Jews, he set out to exterminate them. The situation may look terribly hopeless, but God is making a way   
The former and current presidents of Iran (modern Persia) have literally called for its people to curse Israel and have vowed to exterminate all Jews and “wipe Israel off the map” (Ahmadinejad, president of Iran, 2005.) Isn’t this exactly how evil men behave? And yet, God’s unchanging word is clear: “The wicked plot against the righteous...but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.” 
We may not feel the panic of persecution today, but we need to. 
As throughout time, “Cast your burden on the Lord,” David wrote in Psalm 55, “and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” We may not feel the panic of persecution today, but we need to. We need to feel the burden, the fear, the desperation because God’s people – Jew and Christian alike – are being persecuted* this very day around the world. We must not brush off the reality with apathy like King Ahasuerus did any more than we would personally plot do destroy God’s people. 
This is not to say that we live with that burden on us, not at all! We have to feel it, be aware of it, and faithfully give it to God who is ready to take our burdens. 
There is only one remedy, one relief, one redeemer for all of this, and that tale is even older than the Garden. It’s our Savior and God – Jesus the Messiah. 
The week I wrote this study over 100 Christians were slaughtered in their homes and churches in Nigeria. The week before that, hundreds more believers in China were killed, jailed, or punished for meeting as Christians. By the time you read this, thousands more will have been tortured, jailed, or killed. God’s people are targets for destruction. Persecution and plotting against God’s people is a tale as old as time. It’s as old as the Garden and Satan’s plot to overthrow Heaven itself. There is only one remedy, one relief, one redeemer for all of this and that tale is even older than the Garden. It’s our Savior and God – Jesus the Messiah. Although God’s name is never mentioned in Esther, he is present. 
Although God is not heard, he is speaking as He commands His angels to move on our behalf. God was moving and active – like his own Word – revealing the truth and preparing the way for salvation. In the midst of the confusion in Susa God was orchestrating all people and events so that His people would be saved. God is doing that today. He’s active in the world on behalf of the persecuted believers in Nigeria, China, and Syria. Our part is to be active as well not apathetic. Helen Keller said, “Science may have found a cure for most evils, but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all – the apathy of human beings.” (My Religion, p162) We cannot condemn Haman or any evil if we are not willing to confess the apathy in our own hearts. Confess that today. Repent and pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Pray for the hearts of all who love God and claim to follow Jesus Christ to truly love and follow Him faithfully and fearlessly.

Mordecai jeopardizes his life when he takes a stand and does exactly what he had counseled Esther not to do: reveal he was a Jew. He has been nothing but honorable, honest, wise, and fearless. He encouraged Esther to live in the same way, even if it meant leaving her simple life with him. How was he rewarded? Well, he wasn’t. Actually, exactly the opposite. Folks, that’s the reality. Do right and get rewarded is not how it works – at least not like some mathematical formula: “do right + be good = get rewarded” Nope. Sometimes – often, actually – this side of Heaven, doing right gets you persecuted. Mordecai is on the eve of great persecution as Haman - true to his nature - begins his conniving. Pressure does that. Pressure pushes out the truest part of who we are. Mordecai’s virtue is being pressed out of him just as Haman’s villainy is oozing out. As you feel pressed and pressured, what is coming out of you? “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth flows.” Is your mouth pouring out truth and grace? Are your words and actions, even under pressure, revealing a heart of righteousness, or does pressure bring out the indignance and entitlement in you? Remember that Mordecai’s refusal to bow wasn’t motivated by a personal resentment of Haman but from his personal conviction about the promises of God. That’s where our faithfulness must sprout from and from where our fearlessness gets it voice.

Sometimes – often, actually – this side of Heaven, doing right gets you persecuted. Mordecai is on the eve of great persecution as Haman - true to his nature - begins his conniving. Pressure does that. Pressure pushes out the truest part of who we are. Mordecai’s virtue is being pressed out of him just as Haman’s villainy is oozing out. We in the West don’t have a tradition of speaking blessings over people, but this is more common in eastern cultures. What’s interesting is that embedded in our culture is the idea of blessing. What do you say when you or someone else is leaving? “Goodbye” is actually a contraction of “God” + “Bless You.” 
What do you say when someone sneezes?  “God bless you.” Yet in ancient Israel, blessings were a significant and meaningful part of the culture and not just a toss-away thing to say in passing; it conveyed intent and expectation. The blessings spoken over Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz were not only rooted in thankfulness for who these three were, they were expressions of faith in the character of God and who God would continue to be in their lives.

What’s in a name? Well, letters, of course, but along with the name comes all that that person represents.. 
 
Think of these names: Elvis Presley… Mother Teresa… Noah… Mr. Rogers… Princess Diana… Hitler… 
 
Just reading that list evoked pictures in your mind and emotions in your heart. You associated the names – even the ones that were less familiar to you – with the event, career, influence, or character traits of that person. 
 
Here we are in the account of Ruth, and all the key players are named – even the ones who died. One significant person’s name is left out – the closest kinsmen to Ruth – Mr. Almost-but-not-quite, Mr. Close-but-no-cigar, Mr. Coulda-Woulda-Shoulda…the man who shall remain unnamed – in the Hebrew, literally, “Mr. So-and-So.” 
 
The only names that are mentioned in this account are the names that move the story to the key point. 
The near misses are left out. Why? Because this story is pointing to the ultimate Name, the Name above all names, the Name that one day every tongue will confess. The Name from whom all blessings flow and the Name to whom the final word of this book points – Jesus, the son of David and the root of Jesse. 
 
Here’s what’s exciting, God’s Word tells us that our names – the names of those who claim the name of Jesus – will be recorded in the Book of Life. When we enter into the family of God, we are a part of the lineage of Jesus. Like Ruth, Jesse, David, and all the others, my name is now a part of the family tree. 
 
That is a beautiful reminder to me of the grace and love of God, and that would be wonderful enough as it is, but God – as always – goes even further. 
My name is not just in the book, it’s going to be announced before God the Father and before the angels, “He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My father and before His angels.” (Revelation 3:5) 
 
This is a blessing reserved for those who overcome. When you are tired and weary…when you feel overwhelmed or questioning…take courage in knowing that your heavenly father knows you by name. Jesus our brother is advocating for you, and the Holy Spirit is indwelling you. This is all for the ultimate end that you would be an overcomer in, and through, and to the glory of His Name.

Faithful & Fearless: Lesson 3/Day 3 Ruth 4:1-11

I’m a very nostalgic person. I could spend too much time just thinking on how I imagine life was back then...and “then” could be back in the 1950s or 1850s for that matter. With all the advances of technology, there’s still something lovely about what I imagine was a simpler, slower-paced time.  My daydreams are usually interrupted by my appreciation for modern conveniences like the flat iron, my Keurig, and medicine! The author seems personally invested in reminding us of a similar reality. The old is obsolete! The new has come. Don’t long for the “good ol’ days!” They weren’t good enough at all! What the old system could never do, the new has done – brought us complete forgiveness, total holiness, and personal relationship. Don’t go back. Don’t even spend a moment longing for those days. Hold fast. Press on. Don’t drift away...we have a better hope! “The old has gone...behold the new has come!” Praise God!
