Verse of the Day - Isaiah 41:10

10 fear not, for I am with you; 
 be not dismayed, for I am your God; 
 I will strengthen you, I will help you, 
 I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Reflection: 
Isaiah 41:10 is a great example of the encouragement found within the book of Isaiah. The book of Isaiah is filled with so many countless encouraging verses, which all reflect on the power and love and providence of our Lord God. 
 
In verse 10, there are several layers and parts that stand out, that provide reassurance, hope, strength, and peace: 
 
1) “Fear not, for I am with you”: God is always with us. He is with you, day and night, no matter what you are going through. That is a promise! In verse 10 we are commanded to “Fear not,” because God is with us. What a promise! What an encouragement! We have no reason to fear, because God is with us. 
 
2) “Be not dismayed, for I am your God”: Dismay is another word for distress, usually instigated by something unexpected. In Isaiah 41:10, we are encouraged to be not dismayed. Why? “for I am your God”. We serve the Living Christ, Who conquered death for us, so there is no reason to be dismayed. This is something we need to constantly remind ourselves of, especially when life throws curve balls our way. 
 
3) “I will strengthen you, I will help you”: God promises to provide us with strength, and with help. When you are feeling like you can’t go on or you just don’t know how you are going to get through the day, God will be right with you to provide you with the strength and help you need, to get through whatever you are facing. 
 
4) “I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”: God promises to uphold us. More than that, He promises to uphold us with His righteous right hand. That means, when you lose your footing, He is going to be there to hold you up, if you will trust in Him. In this verse 10, we are told God will uphold us with His righteous right hand. Righteous: Pure, virtuous, upstanding, ethical, honest. Regardless of your circumstances, God is righteous. And He will uphold you with His right hand. His right hand! Throughout scripture, God’s right hand is mentioned several times. Historically, to be put on someone’s right hand is to be held in equal honour. God’s right hand also symbolizes His power and His greatness. 
 
Whatever we are facing, remember Isaiah 41:10 and claim it for ourselves!

Reflection: 
[a]A "shelter" provides safety from a storm or enemy. The term "Most High" comes from the Hebrew el'yon' and specifically implies something "upper," "above," or "highest." The implication is that God is superior to all other powers and supreme above any other deity. There is no safer shelter than what the Most High provides! 
 
The reference to God as "Most High" is seen elsewhere in Scripture. Genesis 14:21–24 famously records Abram's response to the king of Sodom when he offered Abram a reward for rescuing hostages. Abram said he had sworn to the Lord, God Most High, promising not to accept anything from the ruler of that infamously depraved kingdom. 
 
The psalmist refers to the "shadow" of God. In literal terms, a shadow provides little protection, itself. The imagery, however, is of someone who is close enough, and protected enough, that the shadow of their protector is on them. Further, the psalmist will abide there, implying a committed, consistent closeness with the Lord. 
 
Psalm 91:2 continues the theme of God's protection and provision. The psalmist refers to the Lord as both a "refuge" and a "fortress." A "refuge" is a place people can fall back to in times of hardship or danger. A fortress is similar, but the typical "fortress" is a building designed for battle. It provides safety from an attacking enemy and gives those inside the means to withstand an assault. 
 
The ultimate security offered by God is eternal. Jesus promises His followers eternal life, without any possibility of being taken away from God (John 10:28–30). The apostle Paul wrote that nothing can separate the Lord's people from the love of Christ (Romans 8:35–39). He added that we are more than conquerors over all kinds of trouble, including intense persecution and deprivation, "through him who loved us" (Romans 8:37). 
 
Here, the psalmist declares that the Lord is his God, and he trusts in Him. As our refuge and fortress, the Lord merits our full confidence.[a] 
 
[b]No doubt the man who penned this Messianic psalm was himself convinced of the wonderful security that is found in the Lord his God because his faith was credited to him as righteousness and he could legitimately confess that his trust was in the Most High God - the Almighty King of the universe Who is signified as the Sovereign Ruler of all and the Divine Protector of those that believe on His name.[b]

Reflection: 
[a]In essence, these verses are Christ's opening salvo on how to be prepared and how to use our time and energy when the evidence of His return begins to appear. 
 
Although we definitely know that we are living in the time of the end, we do not know exactly when Christ will return. So we have to live in readiness every day. The theme of this brief parable is expectation. Knowing the general signs of His coming, we live expecting the unexpected. 
 
Jesus illustrates this by comparing His coming to that of a thief. We normally do not look for thieves. Understandably, thieves do not advertise their coming, but by taking precautions, we prepare against their coming. All of us lock our houses and hide our valuables in safe places. Some of us have installed security alarms and exterior lighting to discourage burglary. 
 
In the same vein, Jesus urges His people to be vigilant, alert, wakeful, and constantly watchful because a thief's principal weapon is surprise. Even to those who are aware, His coming will occur with jarring suddenness—and more so to those who are distracted by ordinary occupations, "eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage", and the likes. The teaching in this parable is that to live without vigilance is to invite disaster.[a] 
 
Also, Jesus is warning us with great urgency. [b]A season is coming when He will be gone (John 16:4–5) and the world will be waiting for His return as King and the Judge (Hebrews 9:28). He has been clear that nobody will know when that moment is coming (Matthew 24:36). Nobody can know. The only way to be ready for His return is a constant state of preparedness (Matthew 24:43). Jesus' purpose for His people is to live each day as if He might appear at any moment.[b]

Reflection: 
Let us never become too familiar with the gospel, or too complacent with its teachings, that we somehow forget Who it was that willingly gave up the greatness and power and the splendour of His majesty, to be born into humble poverty. Let us honour The One Who was despised of men, rejected by His people and nailed to a cruel tree, so that whosoever would believe in His name would be forever set free from the wages of death, which we all so justly deserve. 
 
It is the God of the universe, Who flung stars into space at the beginning of time, and Who continues to uphold creation through His eternal Word, that was willingly stripped of everything, for your sake and for mine - but one day He is coming back to set up the kingdom that was promised so long ago to His forefather David, when once again the earth will resound with this triumphant hymn of praise, "Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is Yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; You are exalted as head over all." 
 
Let us worship Him together in the beauty of holiness, reverence, and with great rejoicing, for He is exalted over all and He is highly to be praised.

Reflection: 
The author of Hebrews knew that God was not unjust and that those that are trusting Him will never be disappointed by Him. There are occasions when we need correction and times when we need instruction... but God knows that there are also times when His people need encouragement. 
 
What an assurance, therefore, to be told that the eyes of the Lord will never miss any good deed we do for His glory, nor will be unaware of any labour of love that is shown to Him through a tender ministry that is directed towards His people. 
 
What a great encouragement it is to all the people of God - to know that the Lord is aware of the thoughts of our hearts, the words that we speak, and the actions that we carry out in love - for His praise and glory. How uplifting to know that even a cup of cold water, which is offered from a heart that is right with God, will not go unnoticed nor unrewarded.

Reflection:

Reflection: 
 
This passage describes the blessings the presence of God brings to a situation, to overcome fear and suffering like a deer leaping over obstacles, like a deer who can climb sheer rocky cliffs and never stumble or fall, like a deer who can scamper across what appears to be a vertical cliff, unafraid and undeterred by seemingly impassable terrain. 
 
This passage also describes the prophet’s sure-footed reliance on the Lord in times of crisis. Habakkuk had cried out to God about the sinful condition of his nation, and he had some questions about the methods God was going to use to correct the situation. But, like the psalmists, Habakkuk did not stop with penning his frustration; he continued wrestling with his confusion until the Lord brought him to a place of resolution. Habakkuk 3:17–19 expresses the faith of the prophet in the face of troubled times: “17 Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. 19 The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.” 
 
When we run with a deer’s feet, “to tread on heights,” we live above our circumstances. God gives us the grace, courage, and inner strength we need to press on to attain new heights and experience new vistas. With the swiftness of a deer, we can escape our enemies and gain freedom. All this is because “the Sovereign LORD is my strength” (Habakkuk 3:1). 
 
Regardless of what others may do, we keep our eyes securely fastened on the Lord Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:2). We run with endurance the race set before us (Hebrews 12:1) and refuse to give up until God calls us home (Philippians 3:12–14). We watch with amazement as He accomplishes His work in and through us, and we give Him all the praise and glory (Romans 11:36; Philippians 4:20). We shake off the temptation to live for ourselves, and like a deer on a mountain slope, we step boldly into whatever God has called us to do. 
 
In the midst of trying times, it is easy to become overwhelmed with discouragement. Habakkuk definitely lived in trying times, but his solution was to redirect his attention to the Lord. God is the Solid Rock that never fails (Psalm 144:1–2). With God’s promises as our strong foundation, we can walk in freedom and courage, as unafraid and undaunted as a deer leaping on high places, like a deer leaping over obstacles. The Sovereign Lord is our strength.
