It is easy for faith communities to rush past any feelings of grief and loss, brushing aside any space for lament and filling it with something upbeat and happy. But when we do this we are rushing past an essential part of what it means to be human, to experience grief and loss and to make space for lament. In fact, over half of the Psalms have lament themes, meaning that the Hebrew hymn book prioritizes space for this essential aspect of our humanity. (Can the same be said for our Christian hymnals?)

IS THERE NO BALM IN GILEAD? | The Word Made Fresh - Jeremiah 8:18-9:1

"Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love." (1 John 4:7-8) 
 
What do these two verses mean for the church and our lives in the world today? What do they mean when we look back on the church's history of oppressing and marginalizing certain groups people? And ultimately, if no love means no God, then perhaps the only way to know God is to know love.

WE ARE ALL BABY YODA | The Word Made Fresh | 2 Kings 2:1-12 (Video Bible Study)

In Jonah 3:1-5, 10 we see God coming to Jonah a second time, telling him to get up, go to Ninevha, and tell them a message from God. And this time he actually does it, which isn’t too surprising given the whole “fish incident” that he just came out of. He tells them his message - "turn or burn" - and much to Jonah's surprise and demise, they repent and God does too, changing God's mind and holding off the lightning and locusts. 
 
But this raises a few questions: Why didn’t Jonah want to go to Nineveh in the first place? And if the Bible says that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, what’s up with God suddenly changing God’s mind here in this story?!

This week's episode of The Word Made Fresh invites us to have an honest conversation with one of the most well known and quickly quoted verses in the Bible: "All things work together for good for those who love God." 
 
But too often this verse is applied to anyone experiencing oppression and injustice, requiring them to just keep on taking it because "all things work together for good." But in reality "all things" often work together for those with the power and privilege.

A THEOLOGY OF TREES (AND EVANGELISM) | The Word Made Fresh -- Acts 17:22-31

Sometimes when we have a spiritual encounter, our impulse is to box it up so others can experience the same thing. Only when we do this, we're not really letting them encounter God but simply our understanding of God.

Sometimes when we have a spiritual encounter, our impulse is to box it up so others can experience the same thing. Only when we do this, we're not really letting them encounter God but simply our understanding of God.

LAMENT -- The Word Made Fresh: Lamentations 1:1-6

Thus says the LORD: 
Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals 
and make mere flesh their strength, 
whose hearts turn away from the LORD. 
They shall be like a shrub in the desert, 
and shall not see when relief comes. 
They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, 
in an uninhabited salt land. 
Blessed are those who trust in the LORD, 
whose trust is the LORD. 
They shall be like a tree planted by water, 
sending out its roots by the stream. 
It shall not fear when heat comes, 
and its leaves shall stay green; 
in the year of drought it is not anxious, 
and it does not cease to bear fruit. 
The heart is devious above all else; 
it is perverse— 
who can understand it? 
I the LORD test the mind 
and search the heart, 
to give to all according to their ways,
