Does 1 Corinthians 11:26 ('until he comes') Mean Imminence? – Ep. 202 
Dr. Kurschner examines whether 1 Corinthians 11:26 ('until he comes') refers to an imminent return for his church:“For every time you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” 
 
Some pretribulationists think this verse indicates an imminent rapture since Paul does not mention any event that happens before Jesus’ coming. For example, Gerald B. Stanton writes, "We must 'occupy' till He comes, even as in the Lord's Supper, we 'do shew the Lord's death till he come' (1 Cor. 11:26). These expressions emphasize the imminency of the return of Christ, rather than denying it" (emphasis his). This is another example of reading into Paul's message a colossal assumption of imminence. It ignores Paul’s purpose that he “received from the Lord what I also passed on to you” (1 Cor 11:23). He is concerned about the believer’s proper behavior and attitude behind the participation of Lord’s supper, where the eating the bread and drinking the cup functions to be an ongoing proclamation of the believer’s allegiance to the Lord for what he did for us on the cross. Believers are to examine their lives in light of who they are in Christ, and “in remembrance” of Jesus’ death they should look back to the cross and its meaning in their life continually until the Lord himself returns. The eschatological note to Jesus's Parousia reminds believers that the sacramental consummate goal awaits the Supper of the Lamb. 
 
There is no hint from Paul being concerned about making an imminence statement. To read imminence theology wholesale into Paul’s statement is first rank eisegesis. Paul’s purpose in this passage is not to discuss whether certain prophesied events will occur before the Lord’s coming or what they are, as he does elsewhere (2 Thess 2:1–4). To make this into an imminence proof text is to hijack Paul’s sacramental message for one's preconceived theology.

He argues that heaven is where the “inner rooms” are located and the place where the Lord comes out to punish the wicked during the eschatological wrath. 
 
This passage is consistent with the prewrath view and is problematic for posttribulationism. The passage clearly situates the resurrection of the saints before the end-time wrath. 
 
“Your dead will come back to life; your corpses will rise up. Wake up and shout joyfully, you who live in the ground! For you will grow like plants drenched with the morning dew, and the earth will bring forth its dead spirits. Go, my people! Enter your inner rooms! Close your doors behind you! Hide for a little while, until his angry judgment is over. For look, the LORD is coming out of the place where he lives, to punish the sin of those who live on the earth. The earth will display the blood shed on it; it will no longer cover up its slain.” (Isa 26:19–21)

There are good reasons to think that John intends for this scene to be conceived in heaven above. 
 
First, in the immediate context there is a cohesive link with the mention of “the one seated on the throne” (Rev 6:16). The scene clearly establishes the setting in the heaven (οὐρανὸς, Rev 6:14), where it was “split apart like a scroll being rolled up” (6:14). The function for this apocalyptic event certainly serves to reveal the one who will judge them: “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who is seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb” (Rev 6:16). 
 
 
Second, immediately following the deliverance of the innumerable crowd the execution of God’s wrath locates the throne in heaven: “Now when the Lamb opened the seventh seal there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them” (Rev 8:1–2; cf. vv. 3–4). That the source of wrath is coming from the throne in heaven is supported by the swath of downward-moving judgments in the narrative of the trumpets: e.g. “A large amount of incense was given to him to offer up, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar that is before the throne. The smoke coming from the incense, along with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it on the earth, and there were crashes of thunder, roaring, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake” (Rev 8:3b–5). 
 
It is therefore an incoherent interpretation to locate the throne on earth with the innumerable multitude in Rev 7:9–17.

Many pretribulationists believe that the Greek word apostasia in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 means “a physical departure” (i.e. the rapture). Dr. Kurschner critiques this claim in this program. In Koine Greek, the word never means “a physical departure,” but rather “a non-physical departure,” either a political or religious departure. 
 
He also demonstrated that grammatical parallels in other New Testament passages to the grammatical construction found in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 do not support the pretribulation interpretation. Rather, the evidence clearly supports the prewrath position. 
 
Pretribulational interpreters attempt to argue that Paul in 2 Thess 2:3 teaches that the “apostasy” and “the revelation of the man of lawlessness” will happen “during” the day of the Lord and not before it. But the Greek does not support such an interpretation. Rather, those two events will occur first, before the day of the Lord. 
 
“Let no one deceive you in any way; for the day of the Lord will not come unless [ean mē] the apostasy comes first [prōton] and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction.” (2 Thess 2:3) 
 
A couple of simple cross-references of the same Greek construction in 2 Thess 2:3 to other biblical examples will demonstrate that the pretribulational view skews Paul’s message. The Greek is constructed with the conditional “unless” (ean mē) coupled with the adverb “first” (prōton), which results in placing the conditional events sequentially before the main event. 
 
For example, John 7:51: 
 
“Our law doesn’t condemn a man unless [ean mē] it first [prōton] hears from him and learns what he is doing, does it?” 
 
That is to say, before the event of “condemnation,” two events need to happen first: (1) hearing from the accused, and thus (2) learning what he is doing. The two events do not happen “during” the condemnation, as the flawed pretrib Greek analysis would have it. Rather, they occur before the verdict of condemnation. 
 
Next Mark 3:27: 
 
“But no one can enter a strong man’s house to plunder his property unless [ean mē] he first [prōton] ties up the strong man; then [tote] indeed the house can be plundered.” 
 
That is to say, the strongman is tied up first, before the house is plundered (the “then” [tote] confirms this). 
 
These two examples that share the same Greek construction with 2 Thess 2:3 suffice to illustrate Paul’ message that before the day of the Lord begins, two events must happen first: the apostasy and the revelation of the man of lawlessness. Only then can the day of the Lord begin. 
 
Incidentally, Paul confirms this point a few verses later in 2 Thess 2:8: “and then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will destroy by the breath of his mouth and wipe out by the manifestation of his arrival.” Explicitly, Paul states here that the man of lawlessness will be revealed before Jesus returns to destroy him. Jesus cannot destroy the Antichrist when he returns if the Antichrist is not present in the first place! 
 
Second Thessalonians 2:3 has been the number one reason why pretribs are leaving their view and embracing prewrath. And pretrib teachers know this, which is why they will make the most convoluted interpretations on this verse to attempt to maintain pretribulationism and imminence theology—from making up the idea that the “apostasy” means “rapture” to, as we see above, twisting the Greek of Paul to say something the complete opposite of what he is doing.
