2 Chronicles Chapter 8 
 
 During the 20 years it takes Solomon to build the Temple and his own palace (guess it wasn't as quick as it seemed), Solomon has a lot of other stuff on his plate, too. He's swamped. 
 He rebuilds some cities and attacks some others. He starts all kinds of important infrastructure projects, too. Basically, whatever he needs or wants to do for Israel, he does. 
 When he conquers a city, he takes foreigners as slaves. But no citizen of Israel is ever the King's slave. During this time, Solomon decides to marry the Egyptian Pharaoh's daughter. She doesn't have a name, but biblical ladies are used to that. 
 Even though this princess is obviously important, Solomon can't have her staying in the royal palace. After all, it's a holy place. The Ark of the Covenant was there when David was king. She gets her own house so she doesn't taint all the sacred stuff with her foreign ways. 
 Meanwhile, Solomon continues being faithful to God. He offers sacrifices to God just like Moses would have wanted. And he appoints priests and temple-workers, just like David would have done. 
 When the Temple is finally done, Solomon can kick back and relax. Well, not quite.

 The Ark finds a place under the golden angels. Inside the Ark are the two stone tablets that Moses brought down with him from Mount Sinai. They've got the 15—oops, 10 Commandments written on them. 
 Once the Ark is safely in the Holy of Holies, the Temple singers strike up the band and start praising God. 
 The Chronicler describes the Temple as "filled with a cloud." This is the same cloud that followed the Israelites around in the desert back in Numbers. It's a sign that God is present in the Temple. He's come home and obviously approves of his new digs.

    2 Chronicles begins where 1 Chronicles left off—King David has just died and left his son Solomon in charge of Israel.
    The Chronicler lets us know that God is happy with Solomon and that everyone in Israel is faithful to him. After all, they adored his father, so they're ready to be crazy about their new king.

 God decided that Solomon would be the one to build the Temple. And as long as Solomon obeys God, the Almighty will be happy and Israel will be happy and the house of Judah is will reign over Israel for ever. 
 Then David addresses his son directly: Remember, Solomon, stay faithful to God. That is the single most important thing you can do as a king. Don't mess this up. (So much foreshadowing here.) 
 After these speeches David literally hands the blueprints for the Temple over to Solomon. These plans contain every last detail about the Temple (which David put together with a little help from God). How it should look, what it should be made of, who should do what job. It's all spelled out. 
 Foolproof, right?

 But Hanun's advisors convince him that David's men are in town as spies. So Hanun has them shaved and publicly humiliated. 
 David's ticked that his goodwill has been rebuffed and Hanun is sensing trouble. He aligns with some neighboring countries to pool military resources in the hopes that they can destroy David together. 
 But David sends his main man Joab along with his army to fight them off. 
 Joab and his brother manage to scare off both the Ammonites and their co-conspirators, the Arameans. They go running and Joab heads back to Jerusalem. All in a day's work. 
 But the Arameans decide to come back for more. This time, they go up against David himself and he manages to kill 47,000 of them with his army. 
 Needless to say, the Arameans declare they're not going to rush to help the Ammonites ever again. First smart thing they've done all war.

 Remember the Ark of the Covenant? It's that thing the Israelites built way back in Exodus after they escaped from slavery to contain the tablets of the Ten Commandments? They believed that God dwelled in it and they worshipped God through the Ark. 
 When the people finally got into the Promised Land in Israel they brought the Ark with them. 
 Unfortunately, worship of God kind of fell by the wayside. Remember King Saul? 
 David would like to bring back the days of serving God. 
 He tells the people that they should go to Kiriath-Jearim and bring the Ark home to Jerusalem. Everyone thinks this is a swell idea. 
 The trip hits a bit of a snag on the way back to town. One of the guys assisting with transportation of the Ark—Uzzah—touches the Ark and God kills him right then and there. You don't want to touch the Ark, even by accident. 
 David's pretty freaked out so he decides to make a pit stop and store the Ark in the house of Obed-edom for a few months. Lucky for Obed-edom, God blesses his house and no one else even gives the Ark a funny look.

 In the ninth year of his reign, Zedekiah rebels and Nebuchadnezzar besieges Jerusalem for two whole years. 
 The famine grows extremely severe in a short period of time 
 Zedekiah tries to escape at night with his soldiers, but he gets captured by the Babylonians (Chaldeans) before they make it very far. 
 The Chaldeans kill Zedekiah's sons before his eyes, stab his eyes out, and take him in chains to Babylon. 
 Nebuchadnezzar's captain of the bodyguard, Nebuzaradan, comes to Jerusalem and burns down the Temple, the King's palace, and all the houses of the city. 
 The Babylonian army tears down the city walls. Nebuzaradan takes all the remaining people to Babylon—except for the very poorest, who still remain to be vinedressers and do farmwork. 
 
Brunch with the King 
 
 The Chaldeans break the bronze pillars that were in the Temple and carry them to Babylon. 
 They completely loot all the remaining silver and gold from the Temple, stripping away all the treasures and bringing them to Babylon. 
 Nebuzaradan sends the two highest priests of the Temple and the three guardians of the Temple's threshold to Babylon, where Nebuchadnezzar has them put to death. 
 Shaphan's grandson, Gedaliah, becomes the new governor of Judah, which has been virtually emptied out and put in exile. 
 Gedaliah tells some of the remaining warriors of Judah to put down their weapons and live peacefully under Babylon's rule. 
 They do this for a while, but then a warrior named Ishmael leads ten men to kill Gedaliah. 
 The remaining people then run away to Egypt, afraid of what the Babylonians will do to them as punishment. 
 After thirty-seven years of exile and imprisonment, Jehoiachin is freed by King Evil-merodoch of Babylon. The king lets Jehoiachin eat at his own table in luxury and also gives him a generous, regular allowance.

 In the second year of Jehoash's reign in Israel, Joash's son Amaziah starts to reign in Judah. He begins when he's twenty-five and keeps on for twenty-nine years. 
 Like his father, he's a good king. Still, he's not like David since he still permits sacrifices at the high places. 
 He has the conspirators who murdered his father killed, but he mercifully doesn't kill their children. He follows Moses, who said children shouldn't die for what their parents do (and vice versa). 
 He kills ten thousand Edomites and takes over Sela. 
 
An Ancient Rap Battle of Sorts 
 
 Amaziah sends messengers to Jehoash and challenges him to meet him face to face. 
 Jehoash responds saying that Amaziah is like a thornbush asking a cedar to give his daughter in marriage to his son—before the thornbush gets trampled by a wild animal from Lebanon (which is a country full of cedars). 
 Jehoash continues saying Amaziah is proud because he's defeated Edom. But he risks getting out of his depth by challenging Jehoash. 
 But Amaziah won't listen. They meet to face each other in battle at Beth-shemesh. 
 Israel crushes Judah, just like Jehoash said would happen. 
 Jehoash captures Amaziah, destroys a huge wall in Jerusalem, and steals tons of treasure from the Temple. Then he takes hostages and brings them back to Samaria. 
 Eventually, Jehoash dies and Jeroboam II succeeds him (psst: as was said earlier—the narrator is repeating this). 
 
Another Jeroboam 
 
 Amaziah ends up living fifteen years longer than Jehoash (apparently Amaziah was released from captivity at some point). 
 But conspirators kill Amaziah after chasing him from Jerusalem to Lachish. 
 Nonetheless, Amaziah's son Azariah becomes the new king. He helps to rebuild the city of Elath, which is apparently important or something. 
 In Israel, after Jehoash dies his son Jeroboam II takes over. He reigns forty-one years, but keeps on sinnin' like the first Jeroboam did—much to God's displeasure. 
 He helps restore Israel's border, thanks to a little prophecy from a prophet named Jonah. 
 Even though he's not perfect, Jeroboam II is an instrument used by God to take care of Israel and defend it at a time when it would've been weakened. 
 Jeroboam II restores Damascus and Hamath, which had been taken over by Judah. 
 Then he dies and his son Zechariah succeeds him.

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

 By the twenty-third year of Joash's reign, they still haven't made repairs. So Joash tells them not to collect any more donations until they've made the repairs. 
 But the priests agree not to take donations or make the repairs. 
 Yet, Jehoiada takes a chest and puts a hole in it and sets it by the altar as a collection box. 
 When it fills up with money, the priests use it to finally repair the temple. They give it to carpenters, masons, stonecutters, and also use it to by wood and stone. 
 But they don't make any vessels of gold or anything like that for the Temple. The money that would've been used for that is used to help pay the workers. 
 The whole process goes smoothly and honestly. The priests are able to keep the money from "sin and guilt offerings" at the Temple for themselves. 
 
A Momentarily Successful Bribe 
 
 Meanwhile, the wicked King Hazael of Aram threatens to destroy Jerusalem. But Joash gives him all the gold from the treasuries of the temple, along with the votive gifts of his ancestors (the kings of Judah) and his own votive gifts. 
 Unfortunately, after forty years of rule, Joash's servants—Jozacar and Jehozabad— conspire and assassinate him. 
 Joash is buried with David and his other ancestors and is succeeded by his son, Amaziah. 
 
Psalms 8:3-4 
 
You made the skies with your own hands. When I look up, I see the moon and the stars. You have put them all in their right place. 4So why do you even think about men and women? Why do you take care of humans?

4-7a King Mesha of Moab raised sheep. He was forced to give the king of Israel 100,000 lambs and another 100,000 rams. When Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. So King Joram set out from Samaria and prepared Israel for war. His first move was to send a message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Would you join me and fight him?” 
7b-8 “I’m with you all the way,” said Jehoshaphat. “My troops are your troops, my horses are your horses. Which route shall we take?” 
“Through the badlands of Edom.” 
9The king of Israel, the king of Judah, and the king of Edom started out on what proved to be a looping detour. After seven days they had run out of water for both army and animals. 
10The king of Israel said, “Bad news! God has gotten us three kings out here to dump us into the hand of Moab.” 
11But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there a prophet of God anywhere around through whom we can consult God?” 
One of the servants of the king of Israel said, “Elisha son of Shaphat is around somewhere—the one who was Elijah’s right-hand man.” 
12Jehoshaphat said, “Good! A man we can trust!” So the three of them—the king of Israel, Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom—went to meet him. 
13Elisha addressed the king of Israel, “What do you and I have in common? Go consult the puppet-prophets of your father and mother.” 
“Never!” said the king of Israel. “It’s God who has gotten us into this fix, dumping all three of us kings into the hand of Moab.” 
14-15Elisha said, “As God-of-the-Angel-Armies lives, and before whom I stand ready to serve, if it weren’t for the respect I have for Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I wouldn’t give you the time of day. But considering—bring me a minstrel.” (When a minstrel played, the power of God came on Elisha.) 
16-19He then said, “God’s word: Dig ditches all over this valley. Here’s what will happen—you won’t hear the wind, you won’t see the rain, but this valley is going to fill up with water and your army and your animals will drink their fill. This is easy for God to do; he will also hand over Moab to you. You will ravage the country: Knock out its fortifications, level the key villages, clear-cut the orchards, clog the springs, and litter the cultivated fields with stones.” 
20In the morning—it was at the hour of morning sacrifice—the water had arrived, water pouring in from the west, from Edom, a flash flood filling the valley with water. 
21-22By this time everyone in Moab had heard that the kings had come up to make war against them. Everyone who was able to handle a sword was called into service and took a stand at the border. They were up and ready early in the morning when the sun rose over the water. From where the Moabites stood, the water reflecting the sun looked red, like blood. 
23“Blood! Look at the blood!” they said. “The kings must have fought each other—a bloody massacre! Go for the loot, Moab!” 
24-25When Moab entered the camp of Israel, the Israelites were up on their feet killing Moabites right and left, the Moabites running for their lives, Israelites relentless in pursuit—a slaughter. They leveled the towns, littered the cultivated fields with rocks, clogged the springs, and clear-cut the orchards. Only the capital, Kir Hareseth, was left intact, and that not for long; it too was surrounded and attacked with thrown and flung rocks. 
26-27When the king of Moab realized that he was fighting a losing battle, he took seven hundred swordsmen to hack a corridor past the king of Edom, but they didn’t make it. Then he took his son, his firstborn who would succeed him as king, and sacrificed him on the city wall. That set off furious anger against Israel. Israel pulled back and returned home. 2 Kings 3 Joram of Israel
1-3Joram son of Ahab began his rule over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah. He was king for twelve years. In God’s sight he was a bad king. But he wasn’t as bad as his father and mother—to his credit he destroyed the obscene Baal stone that his father had made. But he hung on to the sinful practices of Jeroboam son of Nebat, the ones that had corrupted Israel for so long. He wasn’t about to give them up.

9When they reached the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “What can I do for you before I’m taken from you? Ask anything.” 
Elisha said, “Your life repeated in my life. I want to be a holy man just like you.” 
10“That’s a hard one!” said Elijah. “But if you’re watching when I’m taken from you, you’ll get what you’ve asked for. But only if you’re watching.” 
11-14And so it happened. They were walking along and talking. Suddenly a chariot and horses of fire came between them and Elijah went up in a whirlwind to heaven. Elisha saw it all and shouted, “My father, my father! You—the chariot and cavalry of Israel!” When he could no longer see anything, he grabbed his robe and ripped it to pieces. Then he picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from him, returned to the shore of the Jordan, and stood there. He took Elijah’s cloak—all that was left of Elijah!—and hit the river with it, saying, “Now where is the God of Elijah? Where is he?” 
When he struck the water, the river divided and Elisha walked through. 
15The guild of prophets from Jericho saw the whole thing from where they were standing. They said, “The spirit of Elijah lives in Elisha!” They welcomed and honored him. 
16They then said, “We’re at your service. We have fifty reliable men here; let’s send them out to look for your master. Maybe God’s spirit has swept him off to some mountain or dropped him into a remote ravine.” 
Elisha said, “No. Don’t send them.” 
17But they pestered him until he caved in: “Go ahead then. Send them.” 
So they sent the fifty men off. For three days they looked, searching high and low. Nothing. 
18Finally, they returned to Elisha in Jericho. He told them, “So there—didn’t I tell you?” 
19One day the men of the city said to Elisha, “You can see for yourself, master, how well our city is located. But the water is polluted and nothing grows.” 
20He said, “Bring me a brand-new bowl and put some salt in it.” They brought it to him. 
21-22He then went to the spring, sprinkled the salt into it, and proclaimed, “God’s word: I’ve healed this water. It will no longer kill you or poison your land.” And sure enough, the water was healed—and remains so to this day, just as Elisha said. 
23Another time, Elisha was on his way to Bethel and some little kids came out from the town and taunted him, “What’s up, old baldhead! Out of our way, skinhead!” 
24Elisha turned, took one look at them, and cursed them in the name of God. Two bears charged out of the underbrush and knocked them about, ripping them limb from limb—forty-two children in all! 
25Elisha went on to Mount Carmel, and then returned to Samaria. Revelation 7:9-10 After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. 1 Kings 22 1-3They enjoyed three years of peace—no fighting between Aram and Israel. In the third year, Jehoshaphat king of Judah had a meeting with the king of Israel. Israel’s king remarked to his aides, “Do you realize that Ramoth Gilead belongs to us, and we’re sitting around on our hands instead of taking it back from the king of Aram?” 
4-5He turned to Jehoshaphat and said, “Will you join me in fighting for Ramoth Gilead?” 
Jehoshaphat said, “You bet. I’m with you all the way—my troops are your troops, my horses are your horses.” He then continued, “But before you do anything, ask God for guidance.” 
6The king of Israel got the prophets together—all four hundred of them—and put the question to them: “Should I attack Ramoth Gilead? Or should I hold back?” 
“Go for it,” they said. “God will hand it over to the king.” 
7But Jehoshaphat dragged his heels: “Is there still another prophet of God around here we can consult?” 
8The king of Israel told Jehoshaphat, “As a matter of fact, there is still one such man. But I hate him. He never preaches anything good to me, only doom, doom, doom—Micaiah son of Imlah.” 
“The king shouldn’t talk about a prophet like that,” said Jehoshaphat. 
9So the king of Israel ordered one of his men, “On the double! Get Micaiah son of Imlah.” 
10-12Meanwhile, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat were seated on their thrones, dressed in their royal robes, resplendent in front of the Samaria city gates. All the prophets were staging a prophecy-performance for their benefit. Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had even made a set of iron horns, and brandishing them called out, “God’s word! With these horns you’ll gore Aram until there’s nothing left of him!” All the prophets chimed in, “Yes! Go for Ramoth Gilead! An easy victory! God’s gift to the king!”

He took them from the surrounding pagan nations of which God had clearly warned Israel, “You must not marry them; they’ll seduce you into infatuations with their gods.” Solomon fell in love with them anyway, refusing to give them up. He had seven hundred royal wives and three hundred concubines—a thousand women in all! And they did seduce him away from God. As Solomon grew older, his wives beguiled him with their alien gods and he became unfaithful—he didn’t stay true to his God as his father David had done. Solomon took up with Ashtoreth, the whore goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech, the horrible god of the Ammonites. 
6-8Solomon openly defied God; he did not follow in his father David’s footsteps. He went on to build a sacred shrine to Chemosh, the horrible god of Moab, and to Molech, the horrible god of the Ammonites, on a hill just east of Jerusalem. He built similar shrines for all his foreign wives, who then polluted the countryside with the smoke and stench of their sacrifices.

She made a grand and showy entrance into Jerusalem—camels loaded with spices, a huge amount of gold, and precious gems. She came to Solomon and talked about all the things that she cared about, emptying her heart to him. Solomon answered everything she put to him—nothing stumped him. When the queen of Sheba experienced for herself Solomon’s wisdom and saw with her own eyes the palace he had built, the meals that were served, the impressive array of court officials and sharply dressed waiters, the lavish crystal, and the elaborate worship extravagant with Whole-Burnt-Offerings at the steps leading up to The Temple of God, it took her breath away. 
6-9She said to the king, “It’s all true! Your reputation for accomplishment and wisdom that reached all the way to my country is confirmed. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it for myself; they didn’t exaggerate! Such wisdom and elegance—far more than I could ever have imagined. Lucky the men and women who work for you, getting to be around you every day and hear your wise words firsthand! And blessed be God, your God, who took such a liking to you and made you king. Clearly, God’s love for Israel is behind this, making you king to keep a just order and nurture a God-pleasing people.” 
10She then gave the king four and a half tons of gold, and also sack after sack of spices and expensive gems. There hasn’t been a cargo of spices like that since that shipload the queen of Sheba brought to King Solomon. 
11-12The ships of Hiram also imported gold from Ophir along with tremendous loads of fragrant sandalwood and expensive gems. The king used the sandalwood for fine cabinetry in The Temple of God and the palace complex, and for making harps and dulcimers for the musicians. Nothing like that shipment of sandalwood has been seen since. 
13King Solomon for his part gave the queen of Sheba all her heart’s desire—everything she asked for, on top of what he had already so generously given her. Satisfied, she returned home with her train of servants.

14-15Solomon received twenty-five tons of gold in tribute annually. This was above and beyond the taxes and profit on trade with merchants and assorted kings and governors. 
16-17King Solomon crafted two hundred body-length shields of hammered gold—seven and a half pounds of gold to each shield—and three hundred smaller shields about half that size. He stored the shields in the House of the Forest of Lebanon. 
18-20The king built a massive throne of ivory accented with a veneer of gold. The throne had six steps leading up to it, its back shaped like an arch. The armrests on each side were flanked by lions. Lions, twelve of them, were placed at either end of the six steps. There was no throne like it in any of the surrounding kingdoms. 
21King Solomon’s chalices and tankards were made of gold and all the dinnerware and serving utensils in the House of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold—nothing was made of silver; silver was considered common and cheap. 
22The king had a fleet of ocean-going ships at sea with Hiram’s ships. Every three years the fleet would bring in a cargo of gold, silver, and ivory, and apes and peacocks. 
23-25King Solomon was wiser and richer than all the kings of the earth—he surpassed them all. People came from all over the world to be with Solomon and drink in the wisdom God had given him. And everyone who came brought gifts—artifacts of gold and silver, fashionable robes and gowns, the latest in weapons, exotic spices, and horses and mules—parades of visitors, year after year. 
26-29Solomon collected chariots and horses: fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses! He stabled them in the special chariot cities as well as in Jerusalem. The king made silver as common as rocks and cedar as common as the fig trees in the lowland hills. His horses were brought in from Egypt and Cilicia, specially acquired by the king’s agents. Chariots from Egypt went for fifteen pounds of silver and a horse for about three and three-quarters pounds of silver. Solomon carried on a brisk horse-trading business with the Hittite and Aramean royal houses. Mark 8:35 Calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. 1 Kings 5 Hiram was the king of Tyre.5:1 Hiram lived in a city called Tyre. It was on an island near the coast of Lebanon. Hiram ruled Lebanon, where his people lived. Sidon was the most important city in Lebanon. He heard that Solomon had become king after his father David. So Hiram sent his servants to Solomon, because Hiram had always been a friend of David. 2And Solomon sent this message to Hiram. It said, 3‘You know about my father David. He was unable to build a temple for the Name of the Lord his God. This was because people on all sides fought wars against my father David. They did this until the Lord caused him to beat his enemies. 4But now the Lord my God has made it quiet all round me. There are no enemies and nothing to destroy anything. 5So, I have decided to build a temple for the Name of the Lord my God. 5:5 The temple was God's special house in Jerusalem. God did not let David build it, because David was a ‘man of war’, 1 Chronicles 22:8-9. Now there was no war, so Solomon could build a temple for ‘the Name of the Lord his God’. Solomon asked Hiram to supply wood for the temple. This is what the Lord said to my father David. The Lord said, “I will put your son on your throne after you. He will build the temple for my Name.” 5:5 God had promised this to David in 2 Samuel 7:12-13. 6And you know that none of us can make wood from trees like the men from Sidon. So now, tell your men that they should cut down cedar trees in Lebanon for me. 5:6 Lebanon was famous because of its beautiful cedar trees. And my men will work with your men. And I will pay you whatever you ask for your men.’ 
7Hiram was very happy when he heard Solomon's message. And he said, ‘Praise the Lord today, because he gave David a wise son to rule over this great country.’ 8So Hiram sent this message to Solomon. ‘I have received the message that you sent to me. I will do all that you ask. I will send you cedar wood and pine wood. 9My men will pull them from Lebanon to the sea. And I will tie several trees together. And then I will pull them along the top of the sea to where you want them. There I will make them into separate trees again, and you will take them away. And you will supply food for my palace, as I want.’ 10So Hiram supplied Solomon with all the cedar wood and pine wood that Solomon wanted. 11Then Solomon supplied Hiram with 20,000 cors (4.4 million litres or 1 million gallons) of wheat as food for the people in his palace. He also supplied 20 cors (4,400 litres or 1,000 gallons) of olive oil. 5:11 20 cors or 20,000 cors. Solomon sent this every year to Hiram. 12And the Lord gave wisdom to Solomon, as the Lord had promised to him. Also, there was no war between Hiram and Solomon. They agreed that they would not fight. 
13Then King Solomon caused 30,000 men from all Israel to work for him. 14He sent them to Lebanon in groups of 10,000 men each month. So, they were one month in Lebanon and two months at home. Adoniram was the master of these men. 15Solomon had 70,000 men that carried things. And he had 80,000 men that cut stones in the hills. 16He also had 3,300 leaders. They told the workers what they should do. 17The king ordered them to take large pieces of the best stone that they had cut. They had to take these from the hills where they had cut them. These were the stones that they would build the foundation of the temple with. 18So the men that worked for Solomon and for Hiram, as well as men from Gebal, prepared the stones and the wood to build the temple.
