Lord of Grace Church

If wickedness didn’t feel good, if it didn’t give us a payoff, if we didn’t somehow enjoy it, we wouldn’t do it. Nobody thinks of themselves as bad people, yet we gladly take in the things that harm us. In the Bible, the image of a cup of wine is used to describe God’s will – for good or bad, for judgment or praise – that we drink in gladly and feel accordingly. By Pastor Lars Hammar

Cup of Foaming Wine - Psalm 75:2-9

In a plea for God to protect his innocent people, and not just in their bodies but in their hearts and selves, the Psalmist reminds God of what he’s done in the past, and how letting his people suffer humiliation reflects poorly on him.

Soul of the Dove – Psalm 74:18-23

The Bible has little remnants of an old creation story involving dragons and a sea monster named “Leviathan” getting crushed by God and fed to the animals. Without a lot of explanation for what, exactly, these things are, we can see that they serve to show how powerful God is making the world.

Leviathan – Psalm 74:12-17

When the Psalmist asks God to make the king not a great conqueror, not a wealthy empire-builder, not beautiful and popular, but a champion of the needs of the poor, and a defender of justice for them. It’s the job of the one in power to be on the same side as God – the side of the poor against those who oppress them.
