DANGAL NG PAGBIBIGAY 
 
"Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood." — Mark 12:43-44 
 
What are you willing to give in the name of love? This is a question that deserves not an answer but a response. And this is what our gospel for this Sunday would like us to understand — the things we do for love, the things we do for God! 
 
The words that Jesus expressed radically explains the true meaning of kindness and generosity that defines a real disciple, an act that reveals a sacrifice for love. In our gospel, Jesus praised and affirmed the widow who offered his modest contribution in the temple. Because while the rest are giving out of their excesses, this widow contributed out of her poverty. 
 
As Christians, each one of us is invited to be like this poor widow who never hesitates to live out what generosity is, what charity is. Her generosity comes from her selfless giving, even if it means giving up all that she has. All because of her love for God.The widow was giving not only a little amount, she was actually offering her whole life. 
 
Our motive is important in our acts of giving. May mga mayayamang oo nga't naghahandog at nagbabahagi ng malalaking halaga para sa simbahan o para makatulong sa kapwa subalit maliit na bahagi lamang ito ng kanilang kabuuang yaman at minsan ginagawa nila ito para lang ipakita sa iba ang kanilang panlabas na kabutihang-loob. So why do we share to others what we have? Ito ba ay upang ipakita sa iba na tayo ay mabuti katulad ng mayayamang malaki ang ibinigay o upang ipakita natin sa Diyos ang ating kagustuhang isabuhay at sundin ang kanyang kalooban katulad ng ginawa ng biyuda? 
 
It is not so much about how expensive our gifts are that measures generosity; it is in giving genuinely and wholeheartedly, no matter how little it may appear to be, that measures charity. Hindi sa laki ng yamang inihahandog nasusukat ang kagandahang-loob, kundi sa pagbibigay nang tapat at nagmumula sa pusong dalisay at hindi makasarili. No matter how small, for as long as we put our hearts into it, and we give it with humility, God will surely be proud of our gestures of goodness. Alalahanin natin na ang tunay na pagbibigay ay hindi nagmumula sa kung anong meron tayo, kundi sa kung ano ang kaya nating ialay at isakripisyo para sa pagmamahal, at para sa Diyos. Dahil minsan, hindi sinusukat ng Diyos ang ating binibigay, kundi kung ano ang tinitira natin sa ating sarili.  
 
Our inadequacies are a holy space for God's grace. Besides, it is not primarily money, wealth, and other material possessions that we should offer to God. Whatever graces and blessings we receive, whatever talent and giftedness we have, with all the time and opportunity in the world that we have, if we make use and offer them in humility and graciousness to God, we are already doing enough. In a heart that is willing to give, in a life that is willing to be shared, there lies a real encounter, a genuine act of giving. And that is our most significant participation in God's mission here on earth. Let us remember that no one is so poor to be able to give, and no one is so rich to be living without a need for others.  
 
Let us be like the widow in her willingness to give all that she has. She may have been poor, but her love is so rich and plentiful. May our hearts be awakened by the example of the poor widow who has given her life, her resources to glorify the Lord. May we never get tired of expressing generosity and charity in our personal capacity; let it be our share in God's mission. May we encounter the heart of Jesus in our genuine acts of generosity and love towards God, towards one another, towards the poor. Thus, allowing our lives to become a foretaste of the Kingdom God has promised for all. 
So, let us ask ourselves again: what am I willing to give in the name of love?

ON WANTING AND BELIEVING 
 
Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.” Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” — Mark 10:51-52

How possible is it for a blind man to see? How likely is it for a miracle to happen? Usually, we think that it can never happen because it is beyond ordinary. But today, Jesus revealed to us that it is actually within every possibility. In today's gospel, we heard how Jesus made it clear that some things, although they sound impossible, may actually happen for a faith that is real. 
 
"What do you want me to do for you?" This is what Jesus asked Bartimaeus, a blind man who was sitting at the roadside while Jesus and his disciples passed by. A question plain and straightforward. Bartimaeus replied with a direct and specific statement as well. "Master, I want to see." He was candid with his answer. Bartimaeus was desperate for healing, so he boldly expressed what he needed though people rebuked him for doing so. Those who witnessed Bartimaeus probably found his display of desperation a bit embarrassing and unsettling. But he did not mind whatever the others were thinking. He was honest in expressing his need; he knew himself well. His need for healing, redemption, and desire for a miracle was made possible because he was genuinely open to God. 
 
Ordinarily, when we are experiencing difficulties, loss, or grief, instead of seeking help from our neighbor or God, we hold everything in, choosing silence over the danger of being scolded or rejected for our difficult situation. Instead of criticizing Bartimaeus, Jesus responded to his cries by asking him what he wanted and healing him. This short passage can teach us a great deal about handling suffering in our own lives and in the lives of those in our community. God never meant for us to suffer alone, and the response of Jesus to Bartimaeus shows precisely this. 
 
What is so interesting about Jesus' actions in this story is that though it was already evident that Bartimaeus was blind, Jesus did not automatically decide that healing from blindness was what he needed. Instead, Jesus asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" By asking Bartimaeus what he wanted, Jesus is giving him the chance to make a decision for himself about his healing. 
 
Too often, in our society, people who need assistance are not given this kind of opportunity. But Jesus goes against what is usually expected. Bartimaeus shows all of us that we can openly let our requests be made known to God because he hears our cries and will respond to them in the best way for us. 
 
Many times in our lives, we allow ourselves and others to suffer in silence. But in this passage, God shows us that he is also mindful of our cries and will respond to them. The Lord hears, understands, and responds to our prayers. The only criterion is that we should be forthright in expressing our needs and desires before God. To be honest means that our needs should be genuine. Bartimaeus' prayer was real. It is good to examine ourselves every time we pray. Do the things we pray for really come from our innermost desire or maybe just from our unimportant and selfish wants? 
 
Today Jesus challenges us to be genuine and honest in expressing to God our prayers and desires. Just like Bartimaeus, we should desire to see not just what we want to see, but what we really need to see -- a life lived according to God's intent. 
 
May we learn to trust in the ability of our faith to make miracles happen, and that may we be honest in expressing our prayers and needs before God. Let us not forget that for as long as we genuinely desire God's mercy and love, He will never disappoint us.

They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” — Mark 9:34-35 
 
Ambition is one human quality that drives us to success while causing all sorts of problems at the same time. Ambition, in the beginning, is a positive thing. It is one of the driving forces in our lives. It propels us to excel in our jobs. It pushes us to reach our goals. It can give us a reason for living. But ambition alone is not enough. For if it becomes the sole motivation in our lives, we are always bound to fail. Because life's success is not always measured by our achievements and accomplishment. 
 
In our gospel today, Jesus offers an alternative better than ambition. If we want to have a meaningful life, it is not ambition that should drive us in life; it should rather be mission. The disciples were discussing along the way who among them is the greatest. Each one was probably telling the others they are great because of something that they do for Jesus. In their hearts, they were filled with ambition. But Jesus reprimanded them later on by saying, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” In other words, Jesus is saying, “If you want to follow me, it is not ambition that should motivate you, but rather a sense of mission.” 
 
It is good to examine and ask ourselves: Why do we do the things that we do? Is it because of ambition or because of mission? 
 
Jesus constantly challenges us to be a servant, to think of others instead of ourselves. If we feel unhappy and unfulfilled in our lives, perhaps it is time to take a long hard look at our lives. We have to ask ourselves if we are “I-centered” or “others-centered”, driven by ambition or driven by mission. 
 
The road to happiness is the road of service. The way to greatness is not possible without a loving heart, a humble mind, and a serving hand. Jesus himself is a good example of the greatness of service and humility. He came to earth as a servant. He humbled himself to the point of death on a cross, and thereby became highly exalted by God. Our Lord Jesus did not come here for ambition, but for a mission. Not to be served but to serve. 
 
Some of us might think that serving someone is beneath us or that somehow the act of serving others diminishes us. On the contrary, those who serve the most are the greatest people on earth— and in heaven. Jesus asks us to embrace those who are in need. We are to show concern for the less fortunate. 
 
Those who would be first must be last. This is the opposite of our ambitious ways and we have to admit that Jesus was right. Our ambitions are most often compulsive, suspicious, obsessive, jealous, resentful and full of revenge. Just look at the way politics works in our country. It is supposed to be public service, but what happens is a public disservice, because of self-serving ambitions. 
 
The only ambition that truly gives life is the ambition to serve others. In God’s eyes what is important is not what we have to offer, or what we do not have to offer, but who we are. It is a heart with a sense of mission that the Lord wants us to have, not a life full of selfish ambition.
