Roughly 25 years or so after the events that are recorded for us in John 13 though the Gospel of John was still decades away, at least in its written form, Paul wrote a letter to the Corinthian Christians in which he said, "For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." 
 
Now as you know there are a number of important world changing covenants in Israel's story, but to date, that is before Jesus appearance in the world there had only been one new covenant called that just once by the prophet Jeremiah--Jeremiah 31:31. "Behold, the days are coming, declares Yahweh when I will make a new covenant (I will actually cut a new covenant) with the House of Israel and the House of Judah..." And if we were to read on in that passage, we would see quickly that Jeremiah's new covenant is set over and against the covenant that Yahweh made at Mount Sinai what he calls my covenant that they broke though I was their husband. And you will recall that covenant when it was made, it was attended by roughly the equivalent of 1,000 4th of July fireworks events...

I am beginning tonight with a very brief video clip. It is from--I believe that he is a rabbi--and he is arguing--he is not arguing--he is presenting an answer to the question what makes Judaism different? His answer is compelling! Because he says we are the only people who have ever experienced God's formative revaluation activity at a national level. Where typically there is a teacher and he has private communion with the deity or discovers books buried in a cave or what have you. But Israel at Mt Sinai, 600,000 families are there to see God in this great kind of a light show display where the Torah is given to the people. But that is not what I am playing . I am playing a short clip because it is an insight into how Jewish people regard the Torah. And if we have an insight like this, then we better appreciate why the introduction of the Gentiles into the people of God along with the bringing of the Torah at least in its covenantal form to an end sounded so radical and even perhaps blasphemous. So our lack of acquaintance with Judaism makes us throw them into the legalism basket in a rather uninformed way as if obedience to God and his revealed religion is by definition legalistic and that they were all wanting to earn their way into heaven which is obviously not true. I hope that you can hear it...

Will you turn with me to I Chronicles chapter 23 reading verses 27 to 32...and thinking about the subject this morning "Thanksgiving Everyday..." 
 
Will you note particularly verse 30 which says, "They were to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord and likewise at even." God highly values our expressions of praise and gratitude. You only need to read the scriptures in order to discover that. The matter of praise and thanksgiving occupies a much larger place in the context of scripture that is even a matter of prayer. It is an interesting thing that if you open your Bible pretty much in the middle, you open it to the book of Psalms. And right there in the heart of the Bible, you have this emphasis over, and over, and over again. Not only on the importance of praise and thanksgiving but also the value that God himself sets upon it...

Let's return to Isaiah Chapter 56.  I am not going to re-read verses 1-8.  In a moment , I will begin in verse 9 and read through Chapter 57 verse 13.  It is a kind of complex passage.  And as I mentioned last time, it is hard to know exactly to whom Isaiah is speaking--that is, what time in Israel's story.  So I thought rather than go through the passage in any kind of detail, I am using it as a jumping off point to make a couple of broader points about  the very idea of leadership, Christian leadership, the ministry, and so forth.  So if you are looking at it and thinking are we really going to go through all of these verses, not this time.  Instead I have decided to talk about...well first, vocation since most vocations have some form of a code of conduct that is a set of ethical standards that belong to individual vocations...
