"There's More to Tell" - a Sermon on Acts 18:24-19:7 and Baptist Women in Ministry Sunday

“I saw you,” Jesus says to Nathanael In John chapter one verse forty-eight. “I saw you before you knew.” You didn’t think I saw, but I did. I saw you, Jesus says, sounding a lot like the God we meet in the hundred-thirty-ninth Psalm, when no one else saw you... 
 
There’s something about being seen. God sees us, intimately, fully, for all that we are becoming. God sees each of us as a beloved child of God. 
 
In seeing us, God also calls us, and offers us purpose. 
 
In seeing us, God invites us to take that blessing of being seen, and to offer it to others. 
 
May we be blessed with friends who see us. 
 
And may we be friends who see.

This Second Best Life - a Sermon on John 10:40-42

Who is your God? 
 
It has always been tempting to answer that question by saying God is with the sort of people with a lot of power - people like Pharaoh and Caesar. We don’t tend to think of our leaders, or our heroes, or our influencers, as manifestations of God on earth these days - not overtly, anyway. But we do cling to some of the same ideas about who God is and what power means. 
 
That’s why we need Scriptural stories like the ones we find in the Exodus and the Gospels, stories about a God who listens to the prayers of slaves, stories about a God made manifest in a man, living in occupied territory, hanging on one of the Empire’s crosses. 
 
Those stories have the power to change how we think about God, which means they have the power to change us. To transform us. To save us, even.

You’ve leaped, but you haven’t landed. 
 
Somewhere behind you lies all that once was. Somewhere ahead of you is all that will someday be. And you are suspended, as if in flight, somewhere between the two. 
 
I believe there is a special kind of grace to be experienced in the space between leaping and landing. After all, God has a long, long history of making a way through some very hard-to-navigate transitional spaces. 
 
“Don’t be afraid,” says the Divine through the prophecy of Isaiah. I have redeemed you and I have called you by name. 
 
I will be with you when you pass through the waters. When you go through the rivers, when you walk through the fire. When you face these passages, you are going to make it. You are going to be OK. Because God makes a way through where there is no way through. 
God grants passage when passage seems impossible.

Proverbs 13:12 tells us that hope delayed makes the heart sick. More than 50 years since the beginnings of the modern push for LGBTQ+ liberation, many people are still heart sick. So many people are being asked to wait, to watch their one life pass by without dignity or fairness. 
 
This is a sermon about waiting. I shared it with the good folks of Myers Park Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC - where August is Pride Month.
