SQUAD Community Church

Palm Sunday is the day we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus as rightful King of kings and Lord of lords. Yet, according to this event recorded in all four Gospels, this event showed the false devotion people had towards Jesus and a superficial devotion that only went as far as singing a worship song with crowds of people gathered around as Jesus comes into Jerusalem on a donkey. Palm Sunday is not much of a celebration but rather a warning for all believers to assure that their devotion to the King of kings and Lord of lords is not one of shallow worship, but rather of true devotion to the King of Lord of the universe. ​ 
As Jesus and His disciples and the entourage who followed them came to a stop at the Mount of Olives, where Jesus would visit two other times prior to His crucifixion during this final week leading up to His death, burial, and resurrection. The Mount of Olives signifies a place of anointing as olives were used to make olive oil— the substance used to anoint, a place of prayer, a place of fulfillment of prophecy, a place of hope, and a place of redemption as described in scripture. It is where He would descend into Jerusalem to be crucified (Mk 11:1), where He would pray in the Garden of Gethsemane in agony and be comforted by angels (Lk 22:39-40), and where He would ascend back into heaven to be seated at the right hand of the Father (Acts 1:11-12). ​ 
The day was Sunday. The first day of the week leading up to the celebration of the Passover where the Angel of death passed over the children of Israel’s first born sons in Egypt and killed all the first born sons who did not have the symbol of the blood of a lamb on the door posts of their homes, symbolic for the blood of the Lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world and pay its penalty for sin for all who would believe. Prophecy was about to be fulfilled in very significant ways all starting from the Mount of Olives in which the Anointed One, Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords would fulfill as Messiah and the Christ or anointed one. ​ 
After Mark accounts the miracle prior to this event in the healing of blind Bartimaeus in which describes true salvation and signifies the blindness of man’s heart and spiritual insight that resided upon the people and their inability to see Jesus for Who He is. Mark moves forward in now describing Jesus as true King and Lord, while describing the false devotion the people gave to the King of kings and Lord of lords. ​ 
Today, we are privileged to learn true devotion to the King of Kings and Lord of lords through the false devotion the people gave at one of the greatest moments of salvation history…​

True Devotion to the King (Mark 11:1-11)

Jesus had just explained how to inherit eternal life to His disciples and those who were present in giving up everything and coming and following Him as His disciples who walk and live the way He exampled and making Jesus Savior, Lord, and Teacher of our lives. Jesus, on their way to Jerusalem closer and closer to the cross of His crucifixion, with Jesus leading the way, He declares His final prediction of His death, burial, and resurrection and this time He explains it in more details than before. 
 
As Jesus’s actions were speaking louder than His words throughout the book of Mark, we are given a front row seat of how Jesus handled sufferings and that to our astonishment and even our fear as the disciples and those who were following Jesus expressed. Giving up everything to come and follow Jesus is not without sufferings as exampled in the previous text and described and insinuated by Jesus of leaving home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for Jesus and His gospel— along with persecutions to inherit eternal life by grace through faith in the finished work of Jesus is a call and awareness of sufferings no matter how you look at it or brave and courageous you may presume to be. Following Jesus is choosing a mission and life of sufferings but also a life of resurrection, purpose, and eternal riches now and into eternity. Therefore, we must learn the hope that goes beyond the scope of sufferings through the actions that speak louder than the words of our great Savior and Suffering Messiah who is the King of kings and Lord of Lords.

Jesus came to earth with the goal to save the lost and sinner unto repentance that His name may be the name above every name and be the namesake given to all who would believe in his name for His namesake. Yet, when we lose sight of His namesake, we begin to work against Christ and not for Christ as believers, and unbelievers are unable to witness and experience the name that is above every name due to only seeing a name that has masked the name of Christ for the sake of one’s own name, group, or affiliations. 
​It is for this reason we must learn the significance of His (Jesus) namesake and continue to live and obey God for his namesake in which was given to us as a flag and identity to which we carry in a world at war against the name that is above all names for the sake of elevating one’s own name.​
