This Sunday we return to our studies in John where we find ourselves at the end of the main section of the upper room discourse. Those first disciples will have their worlds turned upside-down in only a few hours, so Jesus wants to encourage them. He tells them that even though they will face hardship, they can be assured that he has - and will - overcome the world. For us today in the midst of hardship, Jesus has overcome, is on the throne of the universe and is coming back one day. So we can have courage to live the Jesus way now, because the future is not up for grabs. Jesus has overcome! It’s Labor Day weekend, the traditional end of summer and start of a new school year. But many students have been back in class for two weeks already. We hope that they are learning again how to pay attention in class. Perhaps their teachers have given a pep talk: “You must pay the most careful attention to what you hear else…” An exhortation to listen and a warning of the consequences for not doing so: “…else you’ll fail the test, your GPA will suffer, and you won’t get into your choice of school.” The preacher to the Hebrews does a similar thing. After presenting the excellence of the Son in whom God has spoken, he exhorts and warns: “We must pay most careful attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” Throughout his sermon he urges us to pay attention to Jesus. "No one," said Jesus, "puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins -- and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins." You don't have to be a winemaker to appreciate the wisdom of Christ's reminder: Just as new wine can burst old wineskins, so the Way of Christ was never meant to be bound by tradition. Yet, there is a place for the old as much as there is for the new -- both belong to Christ! Come join us this Sunday as Eugene Kwon explores the right -- and wrong -- ways we often use tradition as travelers on the ever-new, ever-reforming, ever-reconstructing Way of Christ. David began the beloved Twenty-third Psalm, “The Lord is my shepherd.” A thousand years later Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). As the saying goes, “It’s always darkest before dawn” — this was no less true that first Easter Sunday when Jesus’ followers woke up thinking He was still buried in the tomb. But as the Gospel of Mark reminds us, sometimes it’s pretty dark even after the sun has risen! This Easter coincides with a return to post-pandemic normalcy, but perhaps life still feels dark despite the sun. There are no tigers in Daniel, but there are ferocious wild beasts: a lion, a bear, a leopard, and a fourth beast beyond comparison, all representing oppressive empires. We return to the Book of Daniel midway through chapter 7. Daniel wants to know the meaning of the fourth beast, the ten horns, and the little horns. He is in good company: very many people have wanted to know the meaning of these. Join us Sunday as Bernard Bell helps us make sense of them. The most intractable problems in Silicon Valley have to do with housing. Concerns about homelessness, a volatile rental market, unaffordable starter homes, and $60 million mansions dominate headlines. The housing unsettledness of our time and place is not unique, however, and the most important considerations are not economic. We have been created to live in God’s presence, our lasting home is in a heavenly city he has prepared for us. Hebrews tells us that, by faith, Abraham ‘lived in a tent in the promised land’ as he looked forward to the promised city - teaching us faith lessons to begin a new year. However, Mark does share good news: "Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Son of God” (Mk 1:1). Throughout the birth narratives of the other Gospels, we see each character respond to the good news in different ways. But all respond by changing their normal routines and reorienting their lives around Jesus. How do you respond this Christmas to the good news that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, the Son of God?
