As the Apostle John closes his first letter, he combines two incredible thoughts. First, he reminds his readers that Jesus is the only true God, and second, he encourages believers to keep away from idols. Those might seem like polar opposite thoughts with which to conclude, but in fact, they are paired for the reason of pointing believers to “live in God’s Love and walk in God’s light”, which is the theme we have used through this book series. I will personalize some of these thoughts in anticipation of our church moving into a season of transition from one lead pastor to another - to the glory of God.

But perhaps it is time to return the word “awesome” to its original, Biblical intent. It is used in the Old Testament only when it is connected to God and then it means – “inspiring awe and fear to the point of silenced respect.” This upcoming Sunday is an opportunity to remember the most truly awesome event in universal history – the resurrection of Jesus. The perfect, sinless, Only Son of God, rose from the dead after dying on the cross for our sins. Believing in him and that awesome event changes us from hopeless sinners to transformed children of God. Let’s gather to worship the only Awesome God of truth and grace, for His rescue plan!

Recently I was in the waiting room of a dental office awaiting my turn for a routine cleaning. I noticed that none of us “waiters” were reading magazines, but rather were on our cell phones. (Interesting that we are called ‘patients’ when none of us are practicing ‘patience’). Those devices have become the most popular, modern “meantime” activity while we wait. You can even see drivers at red lights, madly accessing their cell phones, waiting for the light to change. James 5:7 is part of a passage that reminds believers how to wait as we anticipate the coming of our Lord – a timely message for our modern times when the coming of the Lord is truly near.

(I encourage you to go look some polls up on Google) With all of our modern-day resources concerning the Church and the Christian life, you’d think that we would be more united in this matter, singing out from the pews would be a chorus of people with a laser-focused motivation towards a singular goal… But for some reason we are divided. It’s no wonder, then, why the Church in America has declined in cultural influence over the past several decades. 
 
For Paul writing to the Church in Corinth, the purpose and mission of the Church was not only clear to him but also inextricably linked with the salvation and life of the individual Christian. His reasoning is so simplistic and yet was so powerful it shook the core of civilization and altered the course of history forever. And what was that revolutionary idea? Because of Christ, you are a New Creation...

But there were a number of larger items that required two people to share the load. If I was to ask you to share the gospel with someone right now in your own words how do you think you’d do? Would you find it difficult? Easy? Would you worry about “getting it right” or do you feel fairly confident in your knowledge of what the Gospel of Jesus Christ is and why it is necessary? As the Church, we have been commissioned by our Savior to go and make disciples. That is why I think it is absolutely necessary for us to aspire toward proclaiming a consistent gospel message to a world that desperately needs to be transformed by it. 
 
Looking through the story of Redemptive History should help us towards that aim. God, in His wisdom, has given us a consistent message throughout Scripture regarding what He has done for us and why. It is a message of reconciliation, hope, and the God who wants His creation to enjoy His presence so that we may glorify Him once again.
