As we travel through the Gospel According to John I know that 
sometimes it can feel painfully slow. Weeks like this one where I stretch 
credulity and only ask us to read 3 verses can seem a bit much even to 
the most devoted amongst us. If I were in the pew I know I would be 
thinking, “O lord help him as he stretches 3 verses into a whole sermon, 
and help to pay attention.” I know that. At the same time it is not every 
day that we get to hear Jesus—our lord and saviour—praying for us with 
such clarity and purpose and so I trust the Spirit as he tells me to slow 
down here and to have us really listen to John’s gospel. 
Jesus here prays for 
1- our protection 
2- our unity 
3- our joy 
So we will look at these three elements and look at how they relate to 
each other and out lives.

Saying I'm sorry or you are forgiven is something our culture desperately needs to learn again. It is part of reconciling and moving forward after an issue. Today I suggest a way we might learn how to build our forgiveness muscles. Will you join in?

The proverbs have practical tips like not being at lazy will help us provide for our families. If we scratch a little deeper we see that the metaphor of sleep s a powerful one. Where are we asleep in our lives? Where are we ignoring or taking the easy route? Our marriages? Parenting? Health? James tells us not to judge each other. One upshot of this is that rather than judge each other and say each one in hardship deserves the experience they are going through, we can offer help--like Jesus so often did-- loving sacrificial help, as a sign that we are Christ-followers and as a means of saying thanks to God for all that he has already done for us.

Today we look at the vocation of minister in these difficult days. Quite simply I want us to remember ministers are people too, and that the congregation is called to pray for them.
