Luke 10:17-20 
This Gospel passage (Luke 10:17-20) narrates the episode of the sending out of 72 disciples on mission. In order to understand its meaning we must be aware of the context which we find in the verses before. Jesus tells 72 disciples - how to go on mission: 
i) two by two, because no Christian is alone, communion with one another is very important, 
ii) like lambs, because it is not an aggressive mission, the disciples of Jesus are to be meek like Jesus himself. In fact this is the only thing that Jesus specifically told us to learn from him (Matthew 11:29 - learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart), 
iii) without money. Christian discipleship is all about trusting in divine providence. It is all about detachment from the world and worldly pleasures, and attachment to the Lord Jesus. 
After having told them how they are supposed to go out Jesus explains to them what they must say: “Tell them: ‘The kingdom of God is at hand.'” Kingdom of God means God ruling in our lives, taking control of our lives. Kingdom of God is where God’s will becomes my will. It requires total faith and obedience. I must allow God to take control of my lives. I must decide to obey his commandments. In order to obey God, we must first love Him. Obedience is born out of love. 
 
This Gospel passage tells us about the return of the 72 disciples and how they returned with joy and narrated what happened when they preached the Kingdom and invited others to repent of their sins and accept Jesus as their Lord. 
 
We can note three things in Jesus’ response: 
1) Jesus expresses his joy by telling them that their ministry was indeed successful. Jesus could see Satan’s defeat and fall. Establishing of the Kingdom of God means the defeat of Satan. 
2) Jesus tells them I have given you all authority to subdue evil spirits. And promises that nothing will harm Jesus’ disciples. How will that be possible? Christian is someone who has Christ inside of him. It is not an individual Christian who fights the evil one. It is the Lord himself who defeats Satan through us. We have to believe in this and allow Jesus to take control of our lives. We have to submit ourselves to God’s will. The Lord will always be victorious. If we trust in Him, we ourselves will be victorious. We will participate in his victory. 
3) Lastly, Christ also reminds that we should rejoice in knowing that our names are written in heaven, our true home. Although we live on this earth, we are created for heaven. It is our biggest joy. Therefore, let us fix our gaze on heaven and live here on this earth with confidence and joy.
