22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman 
 
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly." 
 
 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us." 
 
 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." 
 
 25 The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. 
 
 26 He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs." 
 
 27 "Yes it is, Lord," she said. "Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table." 
 
 28 Then Jesus said to her, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Hagar and Ishmael 
 
 1 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her." 
 
 Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4 He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. 
 
 When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me." 
 
 6 "Your slave is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her. 
 
 7 The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8 And he said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" 
 
 "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered. 
 
 9 Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her." 10 The angel added, "I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count." 
 
 11 The angel of the LORD also said to her: 
 
 "You are now pregnant 
 and you will give birth to a son. 
You shall name him Ishmael,[a] 
 for the LORD has heard of your misery. 
12 He will be a wild donkey of a man; 
 his hand will be against everyone 
 and everyone's hand against him, 
and he will live in hostility 
 toward[b] all his brothers." 
 
 13 She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen[c] the One who sees me." 14 That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi[d]; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. 
 
 15 So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness 
 1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted[a] by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 
 
 3 The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." 
 
 4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone.'[b]" 
 
 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours." 
 
 8 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'[c]" 
 
 9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: 
 
 "'He will command his angels concerning you 
 to guard you carefully; 
11 they will lift you up in their hands, 
 so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'[d]" 
 
 12 Jesus answered, "It is said: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'[e]" 
 
 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
