• 2nd and 3rd Trumpets (Rev. 8:8-9, 10-11) – The Plague of Bloody Waters (Ex. 7:14-24) 
• 4th Trumpet (Rev. 8:12) – The Plague of Darkness (Ex. 10:21-29) 
• 5th Trumpet (Rev. 9:1-12) – The Plague of Locusts (Ex. 10:1-20) 
• 6th Trumpet (Rev. 9:13-19) – The Plague of Death (Ex. 11:1-12:30) 
 
The purpose of the Exodus: 
1. Expose – to expose the gods and judge them 
2. Unveil – to unveil God’s glory and grace 
3. Repent – to lead God’s enemies to repentance (Rev 9:21) 
• The goal of the trumpets is to unveil evil, empire, and satan’s kingdom for what it is. 
• In the trumpets hell imploding on itself, this is not God being vindictive. Hell attacks its own here, it 
knows no loyalty or fidelity. You get the consequences of what you attach yourself to. 
• God is different, even when they refuse to repent from allegiance with Kingdom of Satan, God still 
pursues His creation. 
 
Bowls (Rev 16:1-21) 
If the seals expose empire’s logic and the trumpets warn of its consequences, the bowls show evil 
collapsing under its own weight. 
• First Four Bowls (16:1–9): Creation suffers without restraint (“all,” not just “a third”). Idolatry 
crushes its own worshippers. 
• Fifth Bowl (16:10–11): The beast’s kingdom is plunged into darkness. Its theater of power is 
revealed as empty. 
• Sixth Bowl (16:12–16): Kings gather at Armageddon—but no battle occurs. Evil assembles all its 
might, only to be undone without a fight, for the Lamb’s blood has already disarmed it. 
• Seventh Bowl (16:17–21): “It is done!” Babylon falls. The system collapses, its illusions shattered. 
Key Point: The bowls show the inevitable end of Empire and Evil—it destroys itself. 
 
The Interludes 
Between the 6th and 7th in each of the 3 cycles there is an interlude which explains what God’s people 
are called to know and do. 
 
Seals Interlude (Rev 7:1-17) 
The message of the Seals= You are spiritually secure! 
• John hears 144,000 but sees every tribe, tongue, and nation worshipping the Lamb= the church 
• The Q: Who can stand? The Answer: God’s people can! 
 
Trumpets Interlude (Rev 10:1-11:14) 
The message of the Trumpets= Go witness! (like the faithful witness Rev 1:5) 
• 2 witnesses- killed in Jerusalem, dead for 3 days, came back to life, ascended to heaven = Jesus, 
but it is also the church (his body). 
• Olive tree and Lamp stand (Zech 4:14): This was the priest and king (Jesus) but in Revelation the 
church is a kingdom and priests to God (Ex 19:6; Rev 1:5-6; Rev 5:9-10; Rev 20:6) and the churches 
are called lamp stands- we hold the light (Jesus- Rev 1:12-13. 20; Rev 2:1,5; Rev 21:23; Matt 5:16; 
John 8:12, 9:5, 12:46) 
 
Bowls Interlude (Rev 16:15) 
The message of the Bowls= Witness by what you do (deeds matter)! 
• White Clothes = deeds and purity (Rev 19:8; 2:4; 3:2; 14:13; 22:12) 
• To 5 of 7 church Jesus says “I know your deeds” 
• What we do (and don’t do) matters!

Interpretive Assumptions and Mistakes 
Assumption #1: Revelation is primarily about the “end times”. 
Assumption #2: What Revelation reveals is a chronological roadmap of the future.

How to avoid interpretive mistakes… 
Step 1: Consider the literary context 
 
Genre

Prophecy does 3 things… It reveals:  
Who God is

Apocalypse  
There are 404 verses in Revelation which contain over 800 Old Testament allusions. So, we must understand the Old Testament to interpret Revelation correctly.  
 
Apocalyptic genre is like a political cartoon. It is the writing of oppressed people under the foot of the empire. Apocalypses are overtly political and are meant to critique to governments of this world and call God’s people to faithful allegiance to the kingdom of God.  
 
Step 2: Know the historical context  
Struggle and Conflict in Revelation: Kingdom of God vs. Kingdom of Satan, Jesus followers vs. unbelieving Jews, Empire vs. The Church, Truth vs. lies 
 
Team Lamb or Team Dragon? 
 
Revelation 1

You don’t just read Revelation, it reads you! 
Revelation will reveal the God you worship or your cultural assumptions about God. We become like the god(s) we worshipLet Jesus unveil God and His character to us (The Jesus of Revelation shouldn’t look different than the Jesus of the gospels or the Sermon on the Mount) 
 
7 Churches (Revelation 2-3) 
 
Summary: 
As a letter, Revelation was written to seven real churches, which implies that its message was understandable to its original readers. As an apocalypse, Revelation uses symbolic language to reveal a God’s-eye perspective for the encouragement of Christians living in Caesar’s empire. And as a prophecy, Revelation warns the churches against idolatry (Rev 2:14–15). This makes sense given how idols and temples peppered the Asian landscape. 
 
Revelation encourages Christians to remain faithful in trials (Rev 2:10, 13). It’s no wonder that Revelation would include this, as the threat of persecution was constant. 
 
Revelation tells the story of how Satan has inspired an evil, beastly kingdom but that one day the Lamb will rescue the world from it (Rev 12–13; 17–22). That such a story is included is not at all surprising given that the message of the idolatrous empire was etched on every official document and ingrained on every temple. 
 
Revelation identifies two groups of people who have been marked out as either Lamb people or Beast people (Rev 7; 13–14). This makes perfect sense because, in the first century, there was only one choice: pledge loyalty to either Christ or Caesar.

John Walton: Lost World of the Flood 
 
• You always begin your books with upholding biblical authority and looking at how the text are not written to us but are for us. As we have discussed in previous episodes, we need to read the account of the flood as an ancient document. Please Remind us of what this is important. 
• In Prop 2 you say that the flood was a real event in a real past. What do you mean by this? 
• Next in props 3-4 you speak about the use of hyperbole in the account of the flood. We covered the “conquest” in our last episode. You talk about how Joshua 1-12 and Joshua 13-24 contradict when taken “literally”, but that they present an important theological point… talk about this and how the Bible uses hyperbole to describe historical events and what this means for the hyperbolic account of the flood. 
• In prop 6 you specifically at Genesis 6-9 dealing with the local flood vs. global flood debate. Outline the arguments for these. 
• At the end of prop 6 you state: “The Bible describes a worldwide flood, yet absolutely no geological evidence supports a worldwide flood. While some people believe that this means that science must be wrong if the Bible is right, we believe that if science is right, then it leads us to a better interpretation of the biblical material, the interpretation that gets us to the original intent of the biblical author.” …. we will get to the scientific side of this later, but this points to the fact that we need to examine the text in their context for better interpretations. Part 2 (props 7-8) examine the ANE background for the flood, and part 3 walks us through the literary and theological context of the flood. Please walk us through the ANE context first before we dive into the rest. 
• Prop 9 is titled “A Local Cataclysmic Flood Is Intentionally Described as a Global Flood for Rhetorical Purposes and Theological Reasons”. Please explain this. (Maybe also get into the traditional vs. order and disorder perspectives here) 
• I had a pastor friend asked me a question recently. He is talking with someone what has a very retributive view of God and refers to the flood as proof that God being angry, violent, and retributive. This is also a major objection by atheists to Christianity too. Also, many say point to the fact that this is not a kids story (we tell them the part about the ark and the animals but not the people that drowned). How do we respond to this and how does proper context deal with these objections and God’s character? 
• You show how Genesis 1-11 is a literary unit. How does all of this work together and set up the covenant?

• In part 4 (props 14-16) you get into the science. Dr. Stephen Moshier wrote a chapter on why geology does not support a global flood. Could you give us an overview of his argument. 
• What about the flood stories from around the world? Usually organizations like AiG point to this as proof of a global flood. Why do these stories point to? 
• Prop 17 is “Science Can Purify Our Religion; Religion Can Purify Science from Idolatry and False Absolutes”. This is an important chapter. Many Christians have become anti-science, thinking it disagrees with scripture, and many have also walked away from faith due to science, thinking it disproves scripture. Talk to us a little about this chapter and how science and scripture can work together. 
• What would you like people to take away from this book and how can it be applied today?

John Walton: Lost World of the Flood

• You always begin your books with upholding biblical authority and looking at how the text are not written to us but are for us. As we have discussed in previous episodes, we need to read the account of the flood as an ancient document. Please Remind us of what this is important.
• In Prop 2 you say that the flood was a real event in a real past. What do you mean by this?
• Next in props 3-4 you speak about the use of hyperbole in the account of the flood. We covered the “conquest” in our last episode. You talk about how Joshua 1-12 and Joshua 13-24 contradict when taken “literally”, but that they present an important theological point… talk about this and how the Bible uses hyperbole to describe historical events and what this means for the hyperbolic account of the flood. 
• In prop 6 you specifically at Genesis 6-9 dealing with the local flood vs. global flood debate. Outline the arguments for these.
