Redeemer Christian Church

When the exiles returned to the land, God provided the resources and the leaders for his people to rebuild the temple, and when God called his people to return to the work they began, he promised that he would be with the people while they worked. Whenever God calls his people to follow him and serve him, he doesn't ask them to do so by mustering up their own strength to serve him, and whatever God calls us to do, he empowers and equips us to complete the task and to be with us wherever he sends us!

God Empowers His Builders - Haggai 1:12-15

in praying the Lord’s Prayer, we are not just reminding ourselves of who we really are and we are reminding ourselves of who God really is. Before we start making requests to God, we have our hearts awakened to know and worship the God to whom we pray. We are praying to the God who is our heavenly father, the God who revealed his name as holy, and the God whose kingdom is coming on earth as it is in heaven. In prayer, we are not simply talking to God - when we pray as Jesus taught us to pray, we are reorienting our hearts to the way the Bible views reality!

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread - Matthew 6:9-13

This year, we acutely feel the brokenness of our world. This year we have seen a global pandemic, race-based violence and riots, economic recession, and venomous political division. Deep in our bones, we know that the way the world is is not the way it should be. But though our world is fractured with pain and sin, the Bible gives us a promise that one day all things will be made new; all sad things will become untrue. The king who came into this world to redeem it will soon come again to restore it. For this better future, we lift our hearts in hope – this is the heart of Advent season.

The House of God - Isaiah 56:1-8

Twelve days ago, over 140 million Americans voted in a historic presidential election. In the last several days, I talked and corresponded with several of our church members. In that correspondence I have witnessed even among fellow believers in the same local church are reacting to this election in different ways. Some are disappointed and very scared by the outcome. Some and have a sense of cautious optimism as a result of the outcome. Some sincerely doubt the legitimacy of the outcome. And some do not wish for anyone to know their true political opinions because they are weary of fighting, and our culture of shaming and outrage. I pray that we can be a church that follows Jesus together, no matter your response may be to this election. It is only through faith in Christ we have union with God and one another. The basis of our salvation is our shared faith in Christ, not shared political ideology. On Christ the solid we stand; all other ground is shifting sand.

After The Election - Jeremiah 29:4-14

In Jesus Christ the awesome reality of the infinite and eternal God took on human flesh. He entered into creation. His life, death, and resurrection validate and confirm all of the revelation of Holy Scripture and left an impact crater so large that it split human history in two pieces. The gods of the nations are deaf and dumb idols that cannot speak and they cannot tell what is to come in the future. But the Lord is a God who speak and who foretells what is to come because he is the author of history - he is the judge who stands at the end of history before whom all nations will bow!

No Other God - Isaiah 45:14-25

The first part of Isaiah (found in chapters 1 through 39) is primarily about bad news. In this first section, God is confronting his people for the ways they have broken their covenant with him; the ways they have not been faithful to him. In the midst of chaos and turmoil, God’s people Israel and Judah have so often placed their hope in the kings and kingdoms of men, rather than putting their hope in God. God’s announces judgment and discipline that is meant to provoke his people to repent and turn back to him. However, the second part of Isaiah (found in chapters 40-66) is primarily about hope and restoration. As God’s people enter into a time of exile, the second section of Isaiah, God announces his intention to redeem and restore his people. But question that emerges is, how will God bring restoration to his people? In a time wherein God’s people have lost their land, lost their temple, and lost their kingdom, how is hope possible? The answer to this question is found in a mysterious character that emerges from this second section of Isaiah. That character is referred to as “The Servant of the Lord.”

Faith is not wishful thinking, making foolhardiness or foolish decisions, or doing what you want to do and then expecting God to bless it. Faith is not putting your hope in a man-centered solution. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing the word of God (Rom 10:17). For the words of God are not mere words. The words of God are the basis of all reality, for by the word God, our Creator spoke the galaxies into existing (Heb 11:3). Faith is the “assurance”, “reality”, and “substance” of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Heb 11:1). Faith is a God centered-reality; it derives from the word of God. Our role is simply to know, to believe, and to rest in what God has declared to be true in his word!

It is so easy to place our hope in things that will disappoint and fail us, whether they be jobs or achievements or relationships or comforts or experiences or circumstances. In particular, this section of Isaiah is showing us that we cannot place our hope in any kingdom of man. Our hope must be in the kingdom of God, and the New Creation that will come as a result of the kingdom of God.

And they are looking to the king. We, too, are looking for vision and direction for the future. We, too, whether we realize it or not, are looking for a king. Which King Will We Follow? - Isaiah 7:1-4, 10-14; 9:2-7

In Isaiah's day, God’s people did not want a God who would confront or challenge them in any way. And today, it is still a human tendency not to want a God who would confront or challenge us in any way. But God’s doesn’t confront us to harm us or shame us - God confronts us to save us!

The vision that Zechariah gives us is great and inspiring. But we still see a lot of people who are hostile to Jesus. We still deal with sickness, death, disappointment, poverty, all the things that seem immediate to us. But our King Jesus works on his own time frame, and we long for the day that Jesus returns to finish what he started!
