We are told that the Captain of our salvation was made perfect through suffering, therefore we who are sinful, and who are far from being perfect, must not wonder if we are called to pass through suffering too. Shall the head be crowned with thorns, and shall the other members of the body be rocked upon the dainty lap of ease? Must Christ pass through seas of His own blood to win the crown, and are we to walk to heaven dryshod in silver slippers? No, our Master's experience teaches us that suffering is necessary, and the true‐born child of God must not, would not, escape it if he might. But there is one very comforting thought in the fact of Christ's "being made perfect through suffering"—it is, that He can have complete sympathy with us. "He is not an high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities." In this sympathy of Christ we find a sustaining power. One of the early martyrs said, "I can bear it all, for Jesus suffered, and He suffers in me now; He sympathizes with me, and this makes me strong." Believer, lay hold of this thought in all times of agony. Let the thought of Jesus strengthen you as you follow in His steps. Find a sweet support in His sympathy; and remember that, to suffer is an honourable thing—to suffer for Christ is glory. The apostles rejoiced that they were counted worthy to do this. Just so far as the Lord shall give us grace to suffer for Christ, to suffer with Christ, just so far does He honour us. The jewels of a Christian are his afflictions. The merits of our great Redeemer are as sweet savour to the Most High. Whether we speak of the active or passive righteousness of Christ, there is an equal fragrance. There was a sweet savour in His active life by which He honoured the law of God, and made every precept to glitter like a precious jewel in the pure setting of His own person. Such, too, was His passive obedience, when He endured with unmurmuring submission, hunger and thirst, cold and nakedness, and at length sweat great drops of blood in Gethsemane, gave His back to the smiters, and His cheeks to them that plucked out the hair, and was fastened to the cruel wood, that He might suffer the wrath of God in our behalf. These two things are sweet before the Most High; and for the sake of His doing and His dying, His substitutionary sufferings and His vicarious obedience, the Lord our God accepts us. What a preciousness must there be in Him to overcome our want of preciousness! What a sweet savour to put away our ill savour! What a cleansing power in His blood to take away sin such as ours! and what glory in His righteousness to make such unacceptable creatures to be accepted in the Beloved! The mental pressure arising from our Lord's struggle with temptation, so forced his frame to an unnatural excitement, that his pores sent forth great drops of blood which fell down to the ground. This proves how tremendous must have been the weight of sin when it was able to crush the Saviour so that he distilled great drops of blood! This demonstrates the mighty power of his love. It is a very pretty observation of old Isaac Ambrose that the gum which exudes from the tree without cutting is always the best. This precious camphire‐tree yielded most sweet spices when it was wounded under the knotty whips, and when it was pierced by the nails on the cross; but see, it giveth forth its best spice when there is no whip, no nail, no wound. This sets forth the voluntarism of Christ's sufferings, since without a lance the blood flowed freely. No need to put on the leech, or apply the knife; it flows spontaneously. No need for the rulers to cry, "Spring up, O well"; of itself it flows in crimson torrents. If men suffer great pain of mind apparently the blood rushes to the heart. The cheeks are pale; a fainting fit comes on; the blood has gone inward as if to nourish the inner man while passing through its trial. But see our Saviour in His agony; he is so utterly oblivious of self, that instead of his agony driving his blood to the heart to nourish himself,it drives it outward to be dew the earth. The agony of Christ,inasmuch as it pours him out upon the ground, pictures the fullness of the offering which he made for men.

Reflection 
 
Those who abide in the love of Christ are assured his kindness. He cares for His children, the sheep of His hand. Never shall those whom He grants drink of the living water grow faint. So trust in the Lord. Lean upon His abounding grace. Abide in the life of His vine and you shall never feel the severity of God's hand! 
 
 Facts of the Matter - Satan Is An Opportunist With Your Soul 
 
After loosing the battle to tempt Christ into sin, the Devil departs "until an opportune time." (Luke 4:13) 
 
AN "OPPORTUNE TIME" -- That is what the Enemy of our soul is soliciting from you as he "prowls about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour." (1 Peter 5:8) 
 
Let me suggest five "opportune times" when Satan is most likely to strike: 
 
1. During periods of strength and success -- 
 
"But when (Uzziah) became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and was unfaithful to the Lord... " (2 Chronicles 26:16a). 
 
2. When you choose to live by wrong priorities -- 
 
David, while at the pinnacle of his career got into trouble with Bathsheba because he was lounging when he should have been fighting (See 2 Samuel 11). 
 
3. When you decide to go against godly counsel -- 
 
Jehoshaphat, who for years had followed God in an exemplary fashion, chose to discount a prophet's warning not to go to war. It cost him his life (See 2 Chronicles 18). 
 
4. When you, in your pride, think that you are capable of winning over Satan's "stratagems" --"Put on the full armor of God... to stand firm against the schemes of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11, 13). 
 
5. During times of stress and fatigue -- 
 
Elijah hit a devastating low after his victorious but intense encounter with the 450 prophets of Baal, and after traveling a demanding day's journey (See 1 Kings 18:37-19:4). 
 
QUESTION: What steps do you need to be taking now to insure the fact that you are not Satan's next victim... during an "opportune time?"

Today's Promise from the Bible - John 3:15-16 
 
That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 
Reflection 
 
The promise of salvation is offered to those who simply believe. Eternal life is the gift to the believer who places their trust in Jesus Christ, God's one and only son. 
 
 March 20: Today, Many Of Us Are Plagued By A Malaise Deep Within Our Soul 
 
Beneath the surface of our lives there lurks a subliminal sense of disquiet... a despondency; perhaps a lingering struggle with depression... even to the point of despair. Let me suggest four reasons as to why: 
 
1. Primal Wounds of the Heart 
Most of us enter adult life deeply wounded. So unless and until we assume responsibility for the past, and allow Jesus the Healer to bind up our wounds, thereby giving us the grace to forgive, forget, and move beyond the past, we will continue on as spiritual and emotional cripples. 
 
"Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves, so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. For He inflicts pain, and gives relief; He wounds, and His hands also heal." (Job 5:17, 18) 
 
2. Cynicism of the Mind 
Secretly, many of us live in two worlds. Intellectually we believe the Word of God to be true. However, when Jesus calls us to steps of faith demanding vulnerability, we often respond with, "I can't," or "I won't." And by our refusal, we demonstrate our spiritual cynicism that God really cannot be trusted. 
 
"But my righteous one shall live by faith; and if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him." (Hebrews 10:38 Phillips) 
 
3. Paralysis of the Will 
Many of us choose to continue to be victimized by our past, our circumstances, and our fears. Our motto is "I can't help it," or "I can't do it." So the freedom, the joy, and the victory available to us in Christ remain a distant illusion that recedes with each passing day. 
 
"But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us." (Romans 8:37) 
 
4. Overcrowding of the Soul 
We are exposed to too much noise, activity, information, and pressure. Too little time is taken for meditation, rest, contemplation and prayer. So the jostling encountered by today's typical urban professional is usually unkind to the inner life of the soul. 
 
"And the work of righteousness will be peace, and the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever." (Isaiah 32:17) 
 
The enemy's objective, to "steal, kill, and destroy" (John 10:10) the abundant life of Christ within us, is being realized if we fail to address these critical areas of life. Ultimately, the choice is ours.

He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. 
Reflection 
 
Take heart, O children of Abraham! The justice of God is inescapable. No fiery terror escapes His sight. No murdering tyrant hides from His eye. No perverse malcontent might flee His presence. Those who persecute and make martyrs of God's people will receive the end they deserve. In fact, they will receive the end that even we deserved—if they repent not. Pray for even the most wicked of your neighbours that they, like you, might find their justice in the blood of Christ. 
 
Facts of the Matter - March 18: The Business Of Discipleship 
 
Recently, a friend called and asked me HOW TO GO ABOUT THIS BUSINESS OF DISCIPLESHIP. 
 
Following are excerpts of my letter to him: 
 
"Doug, it seems to me that the essence of discipleship is this: 
 
(1) Select people to disciple who have F-A-A-T qualities: (Faithful, Available, Able [to teach others], Teachable.) (See Luke 6:12, 13; 2 Timothy 2:2). Understand that in shepherding all are included (See 1 Peter 5:2; Romans 15:1, 2). But here the discussion is discipling, and that involves selection. 
 
(2) Spend quality time with these people: 
Developing friendship and trust (See Proverbs 17:17) 
Encouraging them in their walk (See Hebrews 3:13) 
Modeling what they need to become (See 1 Corinthians 11:1; Proverbs 23:26) 
Listening to them in order to learn who they are and what they need (See James 1:19) 
(3) Help them rearrange their priorities in order to develop the discipline and desire for consistency in the quiet time, Scripture memory and Bible study. (See 1 Timothy 4:7) 
 
(4) You can pretty well count on the fact that they have unresolved problems in at least one of the following areas which you will need to address with them: 
Financial -- Greed, debt, co-signing, fear that God won't provide for their needs 
Sexual -- Pornography, sexual fantasies, unfulfilled expectations in marriage, etc. 
Relational -- Unresolved anger toward God, parents, spouse, friends, etc. 
(5) Keep in mind that behind everything we do must be Compassion and Intercession: 
 
"Those who sow in tears will reap in joy. He who goes out weeping, and carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him." (Psalm 126:5, 6) 
 
Oh yes... One more thing, Doug, Remember that God uses clean vessels: 
 
"In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work." (2 Timothy 2:20-21) 
 
So be sure to focus first on the quality of your walk with God. Then seek to help others!"

Today's Promise from the Bible - 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 
 
For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward [man] is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding [and] eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen [are] eternal. 
Reflection 
 
Our struggles, our battles, our daily toiling against the forces of this present darkness are naught compared with the marvellous riches and captivating glory to which we are called and in which we will soon partake. What matter our suffering? What matter our failures? What matter any measure of suffering when held against the surpassing beauty and permanence of our heavenly hope! 
 
Facts of the Matter - From Wealthy Rancher - Impoverished Cave-Dweller 
 
That's the story of Lot, the nephew of Abraham. Here's how he did it: 
 
LOT MADE THREE BAD DECISIONS: 
 
1. He embraced the negative values of Abraham: 
 
Lot observed Abraham as he sacrificed Sarah to Pharaoh to save his neck. Years later, Lot also attempted to save his neck (and those of his house guests), by offering to give his daughters to the men of Sodom (See Genesis 12:1-12; 19:4-8). 
 
2. He allowed himself to be overtaken by greed: 
 
When prosperity forced Abraham and Lot to separate, Lot ravenously chose the better portion of land for himself (Genesis 13:1-11). 
 
3. He loved the world's sinful environment: 
 
After separating from Abraham, he settled next to wicked Sodom (Genesis 13:12; 19:15, 16). 
 
LOT SUFFERED THREE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES: 
 
1. He demonstrated no confidence in God's Word: 
 
When the angels told him to flee Sodom, he hesitated and sought a compromise (Genesis 19:16-20). 
 
2. He destroyed his family spiritually: 
His sons-in-law had no respect for God's Word when spoken by him (Genesis 19:14). 
His wife lost her life by embracing his values (Genesis 19:17, 26). 
His daughters (who, no doubt were traumatized by his disregard for them) stooped to an incestuous relationship with him in order to preserve the family line (Genesis 19:4-8, 32-36). 
3. He experienced the reduction of his life from rancher to an impoverished cave-dweller (Genesis 13:5, 6; 19:30). 
 
Perhaps the most astonishing thing about this story is Peter's assessment of this rancher gone awry, in referring to him as "Righteous Lot" (See 2 Peter 2:7). If that isn't the grace of God, I don't know what is!

The Lord will judge the people of the earth with all equity and justice. All men have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and all men ought be judged unworthy (Romans 3:23). March 15: The Birth Of A Vision 
 
 
 
"God gives us the vision, then He takes us down to the valley to batter us into the shape of the vision; and it is in the valley that so many of us faint and give way." (Oswald Chambers) 
 
God is allowing the testing... the battering, to mold our character into His: 
 
"Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations. 
 
"Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience. 
 
"But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing." (James 1:2-4 -- Amplified) 
 
Observe the birthing of a calf, or the metamorphose of a moth into a butterfly. Painful. "Battering." 
 
The temptation is to intervene and stop the uneasy proceeding. But we need to understand God's battering "process" and allow it to go on to completion. 
 
Beauty and maturity often emerge from pain: 
 
"Let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work. So that you may be people perfectly and fully developed with no defects, lacking in nothing." 
 
This is God's school in preparing you, the visionary to carry out the vision. In God's school there are no shortcuts. The process produces the product. 
 
So, fellow pilgrim, in your valley, don't faint and give way until He completes His task in you.

It is a curious fact, that there is such a thing as being proud of grace. A man says, "I have great faith, I shall not fall; poor little faith may, but I never shall." "I have fervent love," says another, "I can stand, there is no danger of my going astray." He who boasts of grace has little grace to boast of. Some who do this imagine that their graces can keep them, knowing not that the stream must flow constantly from the fountain head, or else the brook will soon be dry. If a continuous stream of oil comes not to the lamp, though it burn brightly today, it will smoke tomorrow, and noxious will be its scent. Take heed that thou gloriest not in thy graces, but let all thy glorying and confidence be in Christ and His strength, for only so canst thou be kept from falling. Be much more in prayer. Spend longer time in holy adoration. Read the Scriptures more earnestly and constantly. Watch your lives more carefully. Live nearer to God. Take the best examples for your pattern. March 13: Not Everyone Handles Wealth Successfully 
 
 
 
According to Proverbs 10:22, God does entrust some people with wealth: "It is the blessing of the Lord that makes rich, and He adds no sorrow to it." 
 
Yet the Scriptures warn us against the perils of wealth. For example, the more you have: 
 
1. The more people will show up to drain off your resources: 
 
"When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes." (Ecclesiastes 5:11) 
 
2. The greater the potential for strife among family members: 
 
"And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle." (Genesis 13:7) 
 
3. The greater the temptation to hoard and to take life easy: 
 
"And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry." (Luke 12:17-19) 
 
4. The greater the tendency to put your hope in material possessions, rather than in God: 
 
"Charge them that are rich in this world, [not to] trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God... " (1 Timothy 6:17) 
 
5. The greater the tendency to become conceited: 
 
"Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded... " (1 Timothy 6:17) 
 
Perhaps that is why Solomon struck a balance between wealth and poverty in praying, 
 
"Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is my portion, lest I be full and deny Thee and say, 'Who is the Lord?' Or lest I be in want and steal, and profane the name of my God." (Proverbs 30:18, 19) 
 
Clearly, God's Word instructs us to not love or desire wealth (1 Timothy 6:6-10). However, should God entrust us with riches, we are to then carefully follow Scriptural guidelines on its stewardship, such as those outlined in 1 Timothy 6:17-19.

Reflection

Rejoice now and forevermore in the eternal covenant of peace bought by the Son of righteousness! God's compassion will last forever and His mercy to everlasting. Look to Him and embrace the heavenly hope promised to all His beloved children.

Insight 
God commanded that the stories of his mighty acts in Israel's history--and his laws--be passed on from parents to children. This shows the purpose and importance of religious education: to help each generation obey God and set its hope on him. It is important to keep children from repeating the same mistakes as their ancestors. 
Challenge 
What are you doing to pass on the history of God's work to the next generation?

2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for thee. 
If none of God's saints were poor and tried, we should not know half so well the consolations of divine grace. When we find the wanderer who has not where to lay his head, who yet can say, "Still will I trust in the Lord;" when we see the pauper starving on bread and water, who still glories in Jesus; when we see the bereaved widow overwhelmed in affliction, and yet having faith in Christ, oh! what honor it reflects on the gospel. God's grace is illustrated and magnified in the poverty and trials of believers. Saints bear up under every discouragement, believing that all things work together for their good, and that out of apparent evils a real blessing shall ultimately spring--that their God will either work a deliverance for them speedily, or most assuredly support them in the trouble, as long as he is pleased to keep them in it. This patience of the saints proves the power of divine grace. There is a lighthouse out at sea: it is a calm night--I cannot tell whether the edifice is firm; the tempest must rage about it, and then I shall know whether it will stand. So with the Spirit's work: if it were not on many occasions surrounded with tempestuous waters, we should not know that it was true and strong; if the winds did not blow upon it, we should not know how firm and secure it was. The master-works of God are those men who stand in the midst of difficulties, stedfast, unmoveable,-- 
 
"Calm mid the bewildering cry, 
 
Confident of victory." 
 
He who would glorify his God must set his account upon meeting with many trials. No man can be illustrious before the Lord unless his conflicts be many. If then, yours be a much-tried path, rejoice in it, because you will the better show forth the all-sufficient grace of God. As for his failing you, never dream of it--hate the thought. The God who has been sufficient until now, should be trusted to the end.

Memories of God's miracles and faithfulness sustained Israel through its difficulties. The Israelites knew that God was capable and trustworthy. 
Challenge 
When you meet new trials, review how good God has been to you, and this will strengthen your faith

Comfort thyself, tried believer, with this thought: God saith, "I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction." Does not the word come like a soft shower, assuaging the fury of the flame? Poverty, thou mayst stride in at my door, but God is in the house already, and he has chosen me. Sickness, thou mayst intrude, but I have a balsam ready--God has chosen me.
