I think this sermon is about expectation. One definition of expect: to consider obligatory or required. Employees are expected to show up at work. Soldiers are expected to fight in war time. Sometimes expectation means a duty, if there is a duty----What does God expect of us? The next definition of expect----to look forward to something. Soen-young and I are visiting my family in South Carolina in January; my family is expecting to see us. But at Jn 6:62 What then if you… ..Jesus expects something of us. Jesus already expected something of the crowd when he told them, Jn 6:53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood his, you have no life in you . Jn 6:53 is a command, a command expects obedience. Jn 6:53is about a command. Jn 6:60-61 is about a complaint. Jn 6:62 is an answer to the crowd's complaint. Jn 6:60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” Jn 6:61 … ..“Does this offend you? The word… .hard… ..Jn 6:60 … .“This is a hard saying;… it can mean------- rough, harsh, unpleasant. The crowd couldn't hear this-----Some translations, Jn 6:61… .“Does this offend you? Some translations “offend” can mean “shock”. Does this shock you? The crowd was surprised and upset. But Jesus answering their complaint expects something, Jn 6:62 What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? The next reason God expects something of us----- to consider obligatory or required. Is because Jesus gives a plan: Jn 6:62 What then if you should see… … What if you knew a plan? Jn 6: 62 What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? Jesus is talking about the future… … What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend… .? Jesus is also talking about the past … ..Jn 6:62 … .where He was before? So if this sermon has this question: What does God expect of us? Jn6:53 from the command; Jn 6:62, from the plan?

Now, maybe a testimony has two parts. One part, if I would take Jn 9:25 the blind man who received his sight, the blind man says, Jn 9:25….One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.” And if we look at John’s gospel chapter 9 this blind man was blind his whole life but then one day Jesus gave him sight. And after that day when Jesus gave him sight, his testimony, Jn 9:25….One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.” And in a similar way when we look at Jn 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. See, God can make us free in one day. But our whole life we live in that freedom. God can give us sight in one day, but our whole life we see. Testimony begins with one day; but a testimony goes through our whole life. And, and really maybe this sermon is about claims, and maybe this sermon is about testimonies. Jn 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. This is a claim. Gal 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free…The gospel is a claim, God gave me sight; God made me free; but then a testimony has to back up that claim. Now when we look at Gal 1:11-12 I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ. Paul makes two negative claims Gal 1:11 there is a negative claim about the gospel Gal 1:11….the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. Paul’s talking about the gospel, and he says Gal 1:11….the gospel …is not something that men invented, it’s not something that men made up. Paul’s talking about the gospel. It’s not something man made up. And then Paul makes a second negative claim about himself, Gal 1:12 I did not …I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; so we have one negative claim about the gospel, it’s not from men; and then we have one negative claim about Paul, Gal 1:12 I did not receive it from any man,….an then in Gal 1:12 there is one positive claim Gal 1:12 …..I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

Paul was on trial two times before Nero. And it, Ephesians, when we read Ephesians 6 Paul is in the period of his first Roman prison. In the book of Acts we read about that, Acts 28:30 Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who came to him, 31 preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him. So when we read the letter of Colossians and the letter of Ephesians. This is during that time that Acts says he was in prison in Rome and the years were 60,61 and 62. But we have to remember that there was a second time that Paul was in prison at the end of his life. This is about the year 65 or 66 and at that time 2 Tim 1:16says he was in chains. And Paul at that time looked ahead to his martyrdom. 2 Tim 4:6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. So, this sermon is about Tychicus and it's also about Paul, but these two men lives in ways they go together. And I want to talk about three, three missions in Tychicus's life his; the first mission, we know the year is 57, was a mission of brotherhood. And when we read Eph 6:22 -23 Tychicus is sent on a second mission, a mission of encouragement. And then when we read the end of Paul's life, 2 Tim 4:12 Tychicus is sent on a mission to Ephesus to give strength. So I want to talk about these three missions that Tychicus did. And Eph 6:22 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.

I think this sermon is about focusing. During the week we have to focus on a lot of things. If we’re driving on the highway we focus on the road. If I cook I focus on the stove. When we are leaving the house every Tuesday and Thursday when I go to work I have this list, I have to focus. Do I have, well do I have my USB, do I have my wallet, do I have my phone, do I have my school folders, and in much the same way this morning when Soen-young came---do we have everything we need? We focus on what we need day by day. We focus on what we think is important. And so I think this sermon one of the things is how to focus on what is most important. Now, why-----we probably don’t think about angels. And we probably don’t focus on angels. And we might ask, why should I, you know, focus on angels? Why should I be concerned about that? Eph 6:12 is about angels. The first reason we have to focus on angels is Eph 6:12 is about angels. Good angels are called God’s messengers. Evil angels are called demons. On one extreme you will find some people and all they do is pay attention to angels and myths. On the other extreme you will find people who will completely ignore angels. So I want to give you some balance in this sermon today. Why believe in angels? Well, first Jesus believed in angels. Matt 26:53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? Twelve legions are 72,000 angels. Jesus himself witnessed that there are many angels. Jesus resurrection was announced by angels, Lk 24:3 Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen!.... Gabriel the angel announced Jesus birth, Lk 1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

As I got ready this morning there was a Scripture I thought of, Zech 4:10 Who has despised the day of small things? Because in Luke 24 Jesus comes to Cleopas and he is smaller than he really is. Jesus comes to Cleopas as just an ordinary man. Why? In Luke 24:16 But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him. When will Cleopas eyes be opened? But more importantly------Why does Jesus come as a stranger, so ordinary? Why does Jesus come smaller than he really is? There are four parts in today’s passage: there’s the journey, there’s the home, there’s a rest, and there’s a meal; but the question I might ask-----Why did Jesus come so ordinary? Why did Jesus come as just a stranger on the road? Now this journey it says 11 kilometers, or U.S. measurement 7 miles. This is about the distance from Hwasun to Gwangju. Either going by the mountains or the road 11 kilometers is pretty far. It would take some time to get to this village called Emmaus. And we also notice that as Jesus walks with Cleopas and his friend, they’re talking. They talk quite a bit. And usually when we talk we walk a bit slower. So if we describe this afternoon, it’s a long slow walk and then at Lk 24:28 they get to a village; Emmaus is a country place, nothing special, and then they stay there. …..Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So Jesus stays with this disciple and his friend. I would suppose that they started this walk in the early afternoon because they finish it around nightfall. So, ordinary day, ordinary walk, an ordinary stranger on the road. We just have a journey and a stranger, and then they get to their home. And Jesus he would rest in their living room after walking for a long day. It’s Easter Sunday, but if we talk with Cleopas and we talk with Cleopas friend, they would just say, it’s just been a very ordinary day. We just walked from Jerusalem home to Emmaus.

This sermon is about a promise. Jesus promises to those who believe in him. Jn 7:37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart, his will flow rivers of living water.” What does this look like? When does this start? Waters that flow out of our heart have changed our heart. Waters that are living, how do we find this.

Maybe there are three kinds of people in John 3:22 -30. Well, I think there are three kinds of people in this passage from John 3:22 -30. And when we look at Jn 3:23 … .people were constantly coming to be baptized. And this crowd that is coming to John the Baptist are coming to God because they want something new. And maybe this question, “Can God give us something new?” With John the Baptist, God was offering the Israel something new. The second group of people that are in today's passage, Jn 3:25 -26 An argument developed between some of John's disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.-------Jn 3:26They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi,; … Now this argument is about ceremonial washing but Jn 3:26 , the disciples question was about loyalty. John doesn't answer the question about ceremonial washing, what John does talk about is loyalty. Jn 3:26 They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.” And this second group are with John the Baptist because they are loyal to him. Why are we loyal to our teachers? Why are we loyal to a moksanim, or program, or theology? Why are we loyal to our teacher or tradition? This second group are coming to John the Baptist with a question because they are loyal to him.

I used the New King James version at Eph 2:1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, it says the same as Eph 2:5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ… I will not get into the details of the grammar but the truth conveyed is the same. But I think this sermon is about direction. It's also about a fight. Computers in cars give us directions. In the old days, maps gave directions. On Muedeungsan are signs pointing with directions. But if Eph 2:1 were a sign-----Eph 2:1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins: it would point in two opposite directions At Eph 2:1 there is an immediate split, for the church Eph 2:1 And you He made alive,… .The church is on the path of life. We In James 5:11 it says----Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord—that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful. And there are three things we should know about trials and temptations. First, they are under God’s sovereignty. Job was in his trial but God had an end he intended…..you have….. seen the end intended by the Lord—. God has a purpose for trials and God is sovereign, we can give thanks in trials because God will work them for our good. Job in the middle of his trial was blessed, he endured. So, first----trials are under God’s sovereignty; second----we can thank God in trials, because God is working them for our good; and third Ja 5:11 that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful. Jesus is very compassionate and merciful. In Mark 1:12-13, Jesus is being tempted, Jesus knows how it feels to go through trials and temptations. Jesus is merciful and compassionate because he understands us. So someone might ask -----Mk 1:12 Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. Is about us-------Why is it important for us? Mk 1:10-11 ….he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” This is the fullness of God, the Father speaks from heaven, the Spirit descends from heaven, the Son obeys from heaven. But at Mk 1:12… the wilderness,….the wilderness is an empty place. The Spirit leads Jesus into the wilderness, and he is alone. And a question in the wilderness, what is real fullness?

Exodus 23:20 I am going to send an angel in front of you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. 
Isa 40:3 A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 
Mal 3:1-3 See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple.

This sermon has three parts, the gospel is a gift; the gospel is victory, the gospel is stewardship. In Elisha’s time, Samaria was under siege and starving.----and there were 4 lepers at the city gate---faced with an impossible situation -----2 Ki 7:3-4 Now there were four men with leprosy at the entrance of the city gate. They said to each other, “Why stay here until we die? 4 If we say, ‘We’ll go into the city’—the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let’s go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die.”
