Song # 2179 from Our Gospel In Song Collection by Col Johnston. The Book of Proverbs in the Old Testament section of the Holy Bible is a collection of moral and religious teachings, mostly in the form of short sayings. Many of the Proverbs deal with every day matters including common sense and good manners, and most are still relevant to us today. The song “The Righteous Stand Firm” comes from Proverbs 10.
What the wicked dreads will overtake him; what the righteous desire will be granted (Proverbs 10:24). When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone; but the righteous stand firm for ever (Proverbs 10:25). As vinegar is to the teeth and smoke is to the eyes, so is a sluggard to those who send him (Proverbs 10:26). The fear of the Lord adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short (Proverbs 10:27). The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing (Proverbs 10:28). The way of the Lord is a refuge for the righteous, but it is the ruin of those who do evil (Proverbs 10:29). The righteous will never be uprooted, but the wicked will not remain in the land (Proverbs 10:30). The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out (Proverbs 10:31). The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse (Proverbs 10:32).
Thought for today: God’s certainty will see us through life’s uncertainties.
Thought for the future: His love was shown when He came to us as a man. Where will you spend your eternity?
